Do you know any adult who still does that?

One of my friends and his brother still walk the stairs in their house on all four.

They're both in their mid twenties.

They seem to think it's completely normal and everyone does that!

Is it?

Due to my arthritis I did in my previous house and still do in houses with steep stairs.
I live in a single level bungalow now so no stairs.

Brainwashed · 21/03/2023 17:00

I did today when I came in from a long run...but not usually!

nettytree · 21/03/2023 17:02

I do at my parents, but not at mine. I probably still think I’m a child at theirs.

BellePeppa · 21/03/2023 17:02

That wouldn’t have occurred to me in a million years to walk on all fours up (and down 😯) the stairs as an adult. Obviously if someone has a disability or health problem they might have to but otherwise it seems very strange to me.

thisisscary · 21/03/2023 17:03

Downstairs is feet only these days or I'd be off to A&E. Used to go down hands first when I was a little kid though.
Upstairs is feet only if I'm exhausted or carrying something, otherwise it's both hands and feet because it's faster.

I'm in my forties and averagely fit.

Men who admit to sitting down to wee make me flinch.. Urgh....

Pissy loo seats make me flinch.

Until we install a urinal, I’d rather the men in my house sit down to piss.

JarByTheDoor · 21/03/2023 17:08

There are adults who don't occasionally scamper up on all fours, just because they can (not counting those with disabilities that prevent it)? Surely a perk of being all grown up and having your own place is that you can indulge whatever harmless whims you like in the privacy of your own home.

MysteryBelle · 21/03/2023 17:09

Uh…you mean like an animal? I’ve never heard of this and I grew up with four brothers and another sister and a long steep staircase. My brothers would routinely glide down the bannister or sled down the stairs on a cardboard raft (when our parents weren’t home) or swing and jump from the highest newel post, but I never witnessed anyone going up or down stairs on all fours like the demon possessed girl in the Exorcist. 😱 I’m getting shivers just thinking about it.

A baby will necessarily learn to crawl using arms and legs, and a toddler learn to climb stairs by using knees and hands, or a mountain climber scaling rough terrain because he has to, but no, I’m not familiar with what you are suggesting. What in Hades is going on with your brother and his friend, Op? No, it’s not normal.

nicetoseetgesunsout · 21/03/2023 17:09

Same @nettytree - strange isn't it?!

AlltheFs · 21/03/2023 17:09

Excuse the mess of toys but you can see how short our stairs are here. The ceilings are really low so there’s only a few steep ones.
They are much easier to scamper up 😂

MyOldFriendTime · 21/03/2023 17:10

Oh my goodness I do this sometimes too and I'm 51. I start off at the bottom like a sprinter in the starting blocks Blush

WhatNoRaisins · 21/03/2023 17:11

I sometimes do it at night when people are asleep as I find it makes less creaking. Spreads the weight maybe.

IhearyouClemFandango · 21/03/2023 17:12

I quite regularly do it. I’m quite normal in most respects I think.

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 21/03/2023 17:13

Now Im imagining grown adults scampering down stairs on all fours like something out of a horror film 🫣

Same! 😱 Creepy, pun intended.

picklemewalnuts · 21/03/2023 17:16

I'm off to have a try...

KatherineJaneway · 21/03/2023 17:16

Never heard if this. How odd

TheOrigRights · 21/03/2023 17:16

Only if I've run a marathon the previous day!

ReadtheReviews · 21/03/2023 17:17

This sounds like something out of a horror film somehow...go to someone's house, all seems normal, suddenly you catch a grown man crawling up the stairs...

MysteryBelle · 21/03/2023 17:18

Ya’ll need to crack open the Minor Exorcisms and Deliverance Prayers book. In Latin.

MyOldFriendTime · 21/03/2023 17:19

Never downstairs - that would be ridiculous 😆

35965a · 21/03/2023 17:19

Upstairs yes - only if alone (or if with dc because they will find it either hilarious or freaky) and as fast as you can do it!

Downstairs, absolutely not, I’d end up breaking a bone.

PinkBuffalo · 21/03/2023 17:20

Lovingtheglitter · 21/03/2023 16:25

I'm 51 and do this on occasion- only up though not down I'm not an animal!

i am late 30s but same lol

ErrolTheDragon · 21/03/2023 17:24

How do these people manage if they have to carry stuff upstairs?
Maybe these able-bodied young men the OP knows still live at home and have a mother to fetch and carry?Hmm

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/03/2023 17:25

I am going to try it when I get home. Upwards first, then I will see how I feel about downwards.
