How similar do you think the language of 1930s Germany is to the current Tory rhetoric on people crossing the Channel

Using words like invasion,

Stigmatising people coming across the Channel

All the headlines in the news.

I think that we are moving towards language that does demonise people. No matter what you think, the language we use is important. And it's not just people who cross the Channel who face this behaviour

Agreeing that countries (including the UK) can have an immigration policy doesn't mean agreeing with this government's latest one. Disagreeing with this policy doesn't mean you want open borders. Disagreeing with some of the rhetoric used around asylum seekers and refugees also doesn't mean you want open borders.

But the governments latest policy is to try and stop the migrant boats coming across the channel. Sue Braverman wants to deport the MEN (usually young fit and able).

If you don’t want to do this, you are rewarding these illegals by letting them stay.

so you might not want open borders..but that is the unintended consequence. Unless you can think of another way of stopping the migrants coming into the UK without completing the paperwork?

hey no problem you want a summary sweetie - you got it! I realise some of the words in the Guardian article were a little complex so here’s the very brief summary from the 83 year old Holocaust survivor

“By demonising refugees, the home secretary causes divisions that can lead to tragedy. We must not forget the lessons of the past”

she then explicitly refers to the words that were used to describe Jewish people in Germany and how they managed to divide a previously integrated community.

I live in a diverse and multicultural city. I'd gladly welcome more refugees. I detest the language used and the willingness for the government to misreprent the figures to stoke fear and division. Its much like the UKIP campaign before the brexit referundum...

I welcome refugees too. the difficult question is how many.

there are 8 billion people on the planet, many live in shitty conditions, war, famine and persecution. how many can this densely populated island allow in And support?

how come the mumsnetters know better than the policy setters?

I'm a bit confused about this conversation.

If we say we want to stop small boats crossing the channel, we are really saying we want to end all asylum seekers ? We are anti immigration?
Should we want people to risk their lives, and possibly children's lives, crossing in small boats?
