How similar do you think the language of 1930s Germany is to the current Tory rhetoric on people crossing the Channel

cakeorwine · 10/03/2023 18:33

Using words like invasion,

Stigmatising people coming across the Channel

All the headlines in the news.

I think that we are moving towards language that does demonise people. No matter what you think, the language we use is important. And it's not just people who cross the Channel who face this behaviour

This Government is shameful. People who voted for it should be taking a long, hard look at themselves.

What you fail to recognise is that British people’s lives, voters in other words, are affected by illegal immigration.

Do you have no empathy for them at all, is it just one way empathy?

To our shame, I believe this policy is a vote winner.
My daughter is doing a history A level, she said today the Enoch Powell 'rivers of blood' speech is believed to have gained the party 2.5 million votes.

pointythings · 10/03/2023 22:33

@VeniVidiWeeWee currently there are no legal routes for refugees to seek asylum outside the UK. So if we immediately deport everyone who arrives, the result is that the UK will take 0 refugees. Did you not know that?

IJustHadToLookHavingReadTheBook · 10/03/2023 22:34

The language of "invasion" is hugely troubling and without doubt propaganda which does have precedence in the language of lots of far-right regimes of the past, Nazi Germany included. Anyone who is claiming otherwise is being disingenuous and anyone who doesn't care about the implications of language here is part of the problem. Words matter.

I refer you to my reply to VeniVidiWeeWee above. So I ask you the same question: are you OK with the UK's current policy, which in practice will lead to the UK taking 0 refugees?

hamstersarse · 10/03/2023 22:35

Still no videos or transcripts of these racist speeches? Who is saying what, exactly?

@VeniVidiWeeWee

you could start by reading this article by an 83 year old Holocaust survivor written in January this year.

amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jan/17/confronted-suella-braverman-holocaust-survivor-refugees-home-secretary

or is this lady just tofu-eating wokerati representing the liberal elite?

@Hostofgoldendaffodils you're the one who put up the straw man of open borders. And given the ethnicity of our current Home Secretary, your ancestry doesn't impress me. Racists and xenophobes come in all colours. So do you want the things I listed in my post? Do you not see the parallels in the graphic I posted? Are you blind to where the UK is going?

Just listen to the rhetoric of the refugee charities challenging every single attempt to bring in reasonable regulation. Break it down and they evidently won't stop until they'd achieved open borders. I have a good friend who is a huge advocate for refugees and does a lot of very high profile work with charities to help get those living under terrorist regimes safe passage to the UK - but even she admits that, in her circle, these organisations are completely uncompromising in what they what to achieve - in practise, they want open borders. Though they won't phrase it like that.

See also, threat of not being allowed to peacefully protest soon...
So glad most people seem to be sensible about lineker and backing him. He always seems to be a decent man on the right side of things.
Some of the things Fiona Bruce comes out with make me gasp, in a 'how is that impartial?' way. Like when she commented on Stanley Johnson's wife beating (when he allegedly broke her nose) as, 'it was a one- off!'
The tories are best pals with the bbc and money is way more important than anything else.

Arapawa · 10/03/2023 22:38

What do you suggest doing then for all these thousands (of mostly men) arriving here? The government is commandeering hotels to put them in. How many mumsnetters are desperate to buy their own home? Do you mind if the illegal arrivals get those homes instead of you?

FurAndFeathers · 10/03/2023 22:41

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/03/2023 22:32

@pointythings

"for it to meet its obligations under international law on human rights; that is, for the UK to take its fair share of refugees"

Please enlighten me. What specific legislation applies here? "Fair Share" seems to be very wishy-washy for actual law.

Are you allergic to doing any research for yourself?

all you’ve done on this thread is ask to be spoon-fed information.
hardly the mark of a critical thinker!

But since you appear to be unable to seek out any information fir yourself, here is a lawyer talking about the relevant legislation:

The legislation would allow deportation to a third country without access to legal support or appropriate review of an asylum claim.

no one says we should auto-accept everyone that turns up, but there needs to be due process with appropriate legal representation and respect for international human rights.

this bill doesn’t incorporate any of that.

No. Have empathy for people in the South East who see small boats arriving daily. That their services aren’t adequate isn’t the fault of the people on the boats, though. That lays squarely on the Conservative Government and their austerity policies of the past 13 years.

we are in the North West. We have minimal immigration but people here fear immigration above almost anything else. Bullshit whipped up by a nasty, racist Government, driven mostly by people who pulled the ladder up after them. Sickening.

Hostofgoldendaffodils · 10/03/2023 22:46

&Fascinating* to see just how racist, nasty, bigoted and narrow-minded the British Middle Class can be towards the poor of their own country.

you’re clearly just taking the piss.

cakeorwine · 10/03/2023 22:47

There were comments last year basically linking people who come here from other countries as rapists and murderers. That's what happens.

Not seeing people as individuals but as a homogenous group who bring harm to society. The comments were made by one of the Home Secretaries. It might have been at a conference.

And people who try to look out for people who come here are described as "Loony Left lawyers".

It's the politics of division.

I grew up in a town where illegal immigrants were running businesses which they used to rape girls (of my age, at the time) and then force them to have abortions. The police wouldn't deal with them because they were scared of being seen as racist. You're living in a very privileged position if you think such stories are fantasy.

Hostofgoldendaffodils · 10/03/2023 22:50

And NO I do not think that all immigrants are rapists. But this is so freaking obvious I shouldn't have to spell it out.

Gilead · 10/03/2023 22:51

As I said above, provide examples.
The onus is not on the poster to provide you with examples. A logical fallacy, (argument ad ignorantium ) is not helpful.
It rather shows that you deny and want to shift the direction of the discussion.

NoBorderNoCountry · 10/03/2023 22:51

What I find more troubling is whenever people try to address the issue of uncontrolled immigration, the sanctimonious virtue signallers go into a rage and make an issue of the hurty words used, and immediately jump to calling people racists, bigots and Nazis to shut down any discussions. The reality is you don’t have a home if anyone can live in it, you don’t have a country if there isn’t a border.

Does that mean all people who come here across the Channel are like that?

OP posts:
MrsPuddle · 10/03/2023 22:51

It is very dramatic and insulting to Jews to compare these kind of issues to What happened to the German Jews in Germany. JEWS WERE ALREADY SETTLED IN Germany yet everything they owned and earnt was taken from them by their government. Where is the analogy to the immigrant problems???

the migrants who cross the channel to England are ignoring the normal rules for asylum seekers and deciding they do not apply to them. Please note they are mainly(not all) fit young men.

either you agree that all countries can have an immigration policy, with rules and procedures, or you believe that anyone can come to the Uk with no limits.

Linekar and his emotional supporters are all the latter, and they ignore the desperate people who follow the rules and Have to wait, while being pushed further to the back of the queue by all these economic migrants.
