How similar do you think the language of 1930s Germany is to the current Tory rhetoric on people crossing the Channel

cakeorwine · 10/03/2023 18:33

Using words like invasion,

Stigmatising people coming across the Channel

All the headlines in the news.

I think that we are moving towards language that does demonise people. No matter what you think, the language we use is important. And it's not just people who cross the Channel who face this behaviour

And NO I do not think that all immigrants are rapists. But this is so freaking obvious I shouldn't have to spell it out.

So why mention it in the first place?

Nobody is advocating for open borders and it is disingenuous of you to suggest otherwise. What people opposed to this government's legislation want is very simple:

  • for it to meet its obligations under international law on human rights; that is, for the UK to take its fair share of refugees
  • for the UK to invest in the staffing and infrastructure that will allow asylum applications to be processed in a timely and just fashion
  • for the UK to create possibilities for refugees to apply from outside the UK so that they do not need to make dangerous crossings.

People like you are just xenophobes who want the UK to take no refugees at all.

In the same vein, can I label people like as just members of the privileged, bigoted elites who sneer at the working classes?

Mark19735 · 10/03/2023 22:53

Most of the UK's rapists were born here.

To show that people who have these concerns are not fascists.

I grew up in a town where illegal immigrants were running businesses which they used to rape girls (of my age, at the time) and then force them to have abortions. The police wouldn't deal with them because they were scared of being seen as racist. You're living in a very privileged position if you think such stories are fantasy.

Which town?. I grew up in a similar situation but the perpetrators were mostly British.

I’m not really sure what your point is?

namechanged221 · 10/03/2023 22:55

It's de-humanising.
They are people. Not boats.

The police didn't deal with it because they were being paid off by the gangs. I'm astounded that anyone still believes the police's "we were worried about being called racist" lies. They've never given a shit about being racist.

Does that mean all people who come here across the Channel are like that?

NO IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT. No one in their right mind thinks that!

It just means that these are legitimate concerns and that working class people who are scared to walk around in their own communities are not fascists/bigoted for wanting tightly controlled immigration.

FurAndFeathers · 10/03/2023 22:56

It is very dramatic and insulting to Jews to compare these kind of issues to What happened to the German Jews in Germany. JEWS WERE ALREADY SETTLED IN Germany yet everything they owned and earnt was taken from them by their government. Where is the analogy to the immigrant problems???

the migrants who cross the channel to England are ignoring the normal rules for asylum seekers and deciding they do not apply to them. Please note they are mainly(not all) fit young men.

either you agree that all countries can have an immigration policy, with rules and procedures, or you believe that anyone can come to the Uk with no limits.

Linekar and his emotional supporters are all the latter, and they ignore the desperate people who follow the rules and Have to wait, while being pushed further to the back of the queue by all these economic migrants.

@VeniVidiWeeWee

hey no problem you want a summary sweetie - you got it! I realise some of the words in the Guardian article were a little complex so here’s the very brief summary from the 83 year old Holocaust survivor

“By demonising refugees, the home secretary causes divisions that can lead to tragedy. We must not forget the lessons of the past”

she then explicitly refers to the words that were used to describe Jewish people in Germany and how they managed to divide a previously integrated community.

if you need me to use simpler language, please do let me know.

cakeorwine · 10/03/2023 22:56

Hostofgoldendaffodils · 10/03/2023 22:53

To show that people who have these concerns are not fascists.

My comment was about the Government linking people who come here with rape and murders. Helping sow the seeds in people's minds so when they see someone who has crossed the Channel, they think rapist or murderer.

Your response was to post about some people who have committed rape who have come over here.

So their tactics have worked with you

Just as the German Goverment tried to associate Jewish people with issues facing the Germans.

Nooo I was replying to a specific comment that pointed the finger at people who drew parallels between uncontrolled immigration and violent crime.

cakeorwine · 10/03/2023 22:59

It's not going to surprise me if a centre for people who cross the Channel gets burnt down and they get attacked in the streets.

And the Government and the Daily Mail will wonder how someone could possibly get radicalised to do such a thing. But they won't describe it as terrorism.

Agreeing that countries (including the UK) can have an immigration policy doesn't mean agreeing with this government's latest one. Disagreeing with this policy doesn't mean you want open borders. Disagreeing with some of the rhetoric used around asylum seekers and refugees also doesn't mean you want open borders.

The language of "invasion" is hugely troubling and without doubt propaganda which does have precedence in the language of lots of far-right regimes of the past, Nazi Germany included. Anyone who is claiming otherwise is being disingenuous and anyone who doesn't care about the implications of language here is part of the problem. Words matter.

Agree with this.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard ‘swarm’ used.

That asylum seekers might be rapists is a legitimate concern?

based on what?
there’s no evidence that migrants commit crime at a level that is different to the rest of the population

Your comments seemed to do just that.

I never said it was fantasy. But what I would not do is associate a group of people with such awful things.

Do you associate "illegal immigrants" with rape?

You seem to be struggling to differentiate between an insult to newspaper that is proven to lie on a regular basis, and your own perception of working class northern people.

as one of the latter, I’d prefer it if you didn’t confuse the two and slander us all in the process.

the statistics and data don’t appear to support them, but I’m happy to be corrected if you have a source?

no idea why you have to bring working class people into every post either - we aren’t all daily mail-reading asylum-haters as you seem to presume. Please stop assuming we’re some kind of homogeneous mass
