No eggs on pancake day!!

hidingbehindascreen · 21/02/2023 07:06

Just been to Tesco before work and there are literally NO eggs..... not even the really expensive ones they do.......

I am now going to make DH go to every single shop until he finds some, as the day cannot end until we've had pancakes!

OP posts:

@MooBaby that's really uncalled for

Really? Not sure why @MooBaby is getting grief.
The people complaining about no chocolate eggs Easter weekend will be given shrift as will the people who can’t find Christmas tree lights in December. Plus the egg supply has been disrupted for months.

It’s not even as if the Op hasn’t got money now to buy the alternatives ; ready made, shaker bottle, vegan, egg substitute.

janefondofu · 21/02/2023 09:29

@Arrrrrrragghhh maybe she doesn't want to eat vegan pancakes. There was no need for @MooBaby to be so rude about OPs money situation

guestusername · 21/02/2023 09:30

If you use (or sign up for) TopCashback they’ve got a member offer where if you spend £2 or more on pancake mix or pancake ingredients they’ll give you £2 back

TheDead · 21/02/2023 09:36

My god...what is happening to people?? Where's the empathy? This is dreadful!
When I was growing up and when dc was small Pancake Tuesday was a BIG deal and something we looked forward to.
In the grand scheme of things it's not wild to expect that you could go to a supermarket and buy eggs..

These are sad times. I can't believe people have so horrible on this thread

Whatthediddlyfeck · 21/02/2023 09:37

MooBaby · 21/02/2023 07:19

And? Doesn't mean they will be in supply today? It was predictable. Do you expect the shop to keep some in reserve for people who get paid on the 21st of the month?

Bloody hell! Is there any need for this??

MN really is scraping the bottom of the barrel these days

Arrrrrrragghhh · 21/02/2023 09:37

They weren’t.
Op knew they weren’t getting paid until now and there’s been an egg shortage on and off for months.
It’s pretty disingenuous of the Op to complain about the lack of eggs and then drip feed the money element when she wasn’t getting sympathetic responses

It shouldn’t change the fact it was entirely predictable there may be no eggs for pancake day which was what @MooBaby was pointing out.

SinisterIslandRoundabout · 21/02/2023 09:38

@MooBaby what a mean and unnecessary comment.

Arrrrrrragghhh · 21/02/2023 09:40

Oh give over. The Ops financial situation is a separate issue to the egg one. Even if she did have money last week there might not have been eggs.

There has been a lack of egg supply all week. Entirely predicable.

redundantsoon · 21/02/2023 09:40

I had this yesterday OP! No eggs at all in Tesco. But then went to Asda and they had loads!!

Greydogs123 · 21/02/2023 09:41

We just made some with equal amounts of flour and milk (we used a cup) and a tbsp of melted butter mixed in. They cook just fine and taste just fine once you’ve put toppings on. No eggs required.

TheLastDreamOfTheOak · 21/02/2023 09:41

I've also messed up and failed to get any eggs.or flour. I will not be popular when the kids get home

melmos · 21/02/2023 09:42

We've had an issue getting eggs since the bird flu outbreak and I get mine from the garden centre now they also do hone grown veggies and milk so I buy what I can from there and do the rest of the shop at Aldi! Feels a lot greener as there's no packaging although I do drive there so who knows. Price is the same. Good luck op!)

TheGold · 21/02/2023 09:46

There has been an egg shortage where I am (London) for months, but I keep forgetting, as they’ve always been such an easy-to-find staple. My mind just can’t compute that you can no longer just pop out for eggs last minute.

I also popped in for pancake eggs yesterday …and got the last pack of eggs in Sainsbury’s by some stroke of luck. There were loads of pancake mixes on offer, though.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 21/02/2023 09:47

R0ckets · 21/02/2023 07:29

To be honest if finances are that tight that until today you couldn't afford eggs maybe this year you skip the pancakes altogether. It seems a touch daft to spend money you don't have on something so unnecessary.

I agree. Plus going round every shop until you find some is a total waste of time and money too.

fluffylampbear · 21/02/2023 09:48

you definitely don't need eggs to make pancakes!! vegan ones taste just as good and super easy to make.

Mañanarama · 21/02/2023 09:51

There’s an egg shortage? We get 18 a week from a farm and had no idea supermarkets were struggling. OP see if you can find somewhere local that sells them fresh, so much tastier and usually pretty cheap too, ours cost £1.20 for six.

Rapunzel22 · 21/02/2023 09:52

HangingOver · 21/02/2023 07:20

Vegan pancakes work fine... I make them with oat milk and the water out of acan of chickpeas. They don't taste of chickpeas at all.

😬😬😬😂

Lachimolala · 21/02/2023 09:53

Not RTFT so sorry if this has been suggested, but Chinese supermarket/shops have usually got loads in. Try one of those.

inloveandmarried · 21/02/2023 09:53

gogohmm · 21/02/2023 07:18

You can make them without eggs.

	220g of plain flour
680ml of almond milk, maybe more to loosen
	1/2 tsp <a class="break-all" href="https://www.greatbritishchefs.com/collections/salt-recipes" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">salt</a>
5 tbsp of vegetable oil, (or other neutral-flavoured oil)

Obviously use normal milk if you aren't vegan.

Made these yesterday for the vegans in the family. I ate one and they are really good. Not sure now what the egg actually contributes to the dish.

Feel better now, do you?

The ready mades in Aldi are really nice, OP 😃

Nutrients?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 21/02/2023 09:55

@FangsForTheMemory

follow a fun tradition

You do realise that it's actually Shrove Tuesday, the start of Lent? So it's a religious thing. But no, forget that. Just buy loads of chocolate Easter Eggs too for when it ends, because that's a 'fun tradition' too.

No wonder kids have no idea these days.

fluffylampbear · 21/02/2023 09:57

@MeinKraft you could use oat flour instead of regular flour (for more protein / nutrients), ground almonds, ground flaxseed, mashed banana etc etc.

there are a lot of ways you can make them more nutritious without eggs.

Ruth98 · 21/02/2023 09:58

TrianglePlayer · 21/02/2023 07:21

We’ve inadvertently got about 25 in our fridge. I order them every week but they’ve backed up without me realising. It’s kind of risky leaving it until the actual day. Like trying to find an advent calendar on 1 December 🤔

If you crack your eggs into an ice cube tray you can freeze them for 6 months and just pop out however many you need and leave to defrost at room temperature.

Sunshineandrainbow · 21/02/2023 10:01

Try places like m and s they had them last Night. Saw them when I went to buy fresh batter mix thst we get every year because I am useless and it is discontinued 😭
