No eggs on pancake day!!

hidingbehindascreen · 21/02/2023 07:06

Just been to Tesco before work and there are literally NO eggs..... not even the really expensive ones they do.......

I am now going to make DH go to every single shop until he finds some, as the day cannot end until we've had pancakes!

OP posts:
BlackbeardsToast · 21/02/2023 08:13

They use chickpea water to make meringue so I am guessing it can act as an egg substitute in a range of ways?

BalloonInvestigator · 21/02/2023 08:14

Can anyne tell me the other historic Christian religious observance days? Many lost now. Michaelmas is one I recall.

ifonly4 · 21/02/2023 08:14

If you or your DH have time, our Tescos have lots of bottle pancake mixes (£1 I think, don't know how many they make). They're on one of the ends, totally opposite end to bakery and cake mixes. The did have some ready made ones in chiller cabinet, but they were £2.30 for 6 (no idea how good they are).

Lostinadream24 · 21/02/2023 08:16

Pancakes can be enjoyed any day of the year.
Personally I'd rather enjoy mine on a day that I'm not going to be caught up in a mad egg hunt.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/02/2023 08:17

The pancake mix is only 50 p in Iceland according to Google. But the reviews for all versions from all supermarkets are pretty terrible. Makes you wonder what is in it for something so basic to be so bad.

MichaelFabricantWig · 21/02/2023 08:21

I was in our local supermarkets Saturday pm and there were 2 cartons of eggs and no tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce whatsoever. However I went back Sunday morning and managed to get some, but there weren’t many at all in stock

Allblackeverythingalways · 21/02/2023 08:21

Glad we have chickens, we normally have too many eggs!
Poor things aren't allowed out at all at the moment though ☹️🐔🐔🐔

Thingstodotoday · 21/02/2023 08:22

MooBaby · 21/02/2023 07:19

And? Doesn't mean they will be in supply today? It was predictable. Do you expect the shop to keep some in reserve for people who get paid on the 21st of the month?

@MooBaby Are you a bit dense? Why would you notice that something you’re not trying to buy isn’t in stock?

HashtagShitShop · 21/02/2023 08:23

louise5754 · 21/02/2023 07:20

I'm having my Asda delivered today. I've ordered eggs for the same reason. Odds of me receiving eggs???

Plus there were no tomatoes in stock. Non whatsoever!!!

Yep I'm struggling to get spinach too (the baby leaves sort is our favourite but I haven't seen any for 2 to 3 weeks)

ifonly4 · 21/02/2023 08:23

It's only natural that OP wants to have pancakes like a lot of us - it's a bit of light hearted fun and a chance to have a pudding (rarely have them here) or if savoury ones, something different for a meal. Yes, pancakes cost money, but they are food and if that's what OP wants to do with what disposable income she does have (rather than say bottle wine, coffee out) then good on her.

R0ckets · 21/02/2023 07:29

To be honest if finances are that tight that until today you couldn't afford eggs maybe this year you skip the pancakes altogether. It seems a touch daft to spend money you don't have on something so unnecessary.

fucking hell. It’s pancakes literally one of the cheapest things you can make, hardly like she’s serving up foie gras and truffles with them

Maybe go back to bed and get out the right side this time?

Do you have to work at being nasty or does it just come naturally to you?🤔

Persipan · 21/02/2023 08:34

It's interesting that people's experiences of egg shortages are so varied. Round here, for months, there have quite regularly been no eggs on the shelves at all - not even the really expensive ones from posh chickens - and when they're in stock you're limited how many you can buy. My understanding is that it's due to a combination of avian flu and supermarkets not paying providers properly.

I managed to get pancake shakers at the weekend and I just saw more on the shelf this morning, so hopefully they're a good alternative for anyone unable to find eggs.

Hope you get sorted and enjoy your pancakes, OP!

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 21/02/2023 08:34

Another option if you can't get eggs or substitutes could be potato cakes? A lot of recipes call for an egg but the recipe I grew up with doesn't use any. Something like this below.

www.instructables.com/Traditional-LancashireYorkshire-Potato-Cakes/

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 21/02/2023 08:35

Although I've just realised that recipe bakes them, and we fry ours. But that's the ingredients anyway.

Allblackeverythingalways · 21/02/2023 08:36

Some people sell their excess eggs outside their house, keep your eyes peeled!

mogtheexcellent · 21/02/2023 08:38

tbh the shaker packs are on offer at £1 atm and probably a safer bet with availability.

TortillaChipAddict · 21/02/2023 08:39

We don’t have eggs in the house here due to a family member’s severe allergy. We just had real nice egg free pancakes this morning (bbc vegan recipe). I’d recommend buying a pack of chia seeds in as they are really useful and work out very cheap as an egg replacer as you only use a teaspoon at a time. They work well for pancakes and also are the best alternative I’ve found for the egg stage of breading things. The only thing is you do see the seeds so if you’re making an extra special cake you might want to use an alternative like chickpea water

oakleaffy · 21/02/2023 08:39

I found two organic eggs at back of fridge
Sadly too old to use (3 months!)
I tested them in a jug of water and both floated.

Hope I cam find some fresh ones today

Jellycatspyjamas · 21/02/2023 08:39

Honestly I can’t believe folk think it’s ok to not be able to buy a staple of many diets, or that pancakes are a luxury to be planned and budgeted for - how have we become so insensitive to the shambles our economy has become.

OP I hope you find eggs and have the best pancakes.

MrsMitford3 · 21/02/2023 08:40

Eggs arrived this am in my ocado order.

We have a very active whatspp group on my road-would happily lend/give someone a couple of eggs if they asked-is this an option?

Tiredmum100 · 21/02/2023 08:41

dudsville · 21/02/2023 07:30

There's some smug/rough responses here. The most random posts attract a pile on. My guess is that some folks need to vent and their responses are not about OP's eggs.

OP, hope you find your eggs or an alternative!

I know right. I was just thinking the same. I hate posts like this where random people start acting stupid and horrible to a harmless thread.

You can't afford eggs OP, how dare you moan about it. You can't afford eggs op, you should not be having any form of enjoyment or treats then. You don't have eggs in the house? The point of shrove Tuesday is to use up what you have Op.... I wish all the fun suckers would take their misery elsewhere.

Fwiw OP, I hope you find some eggs and enjoy your bloody pancakes!!

Candlemas ?.

VenusClapTrap · 21/02/2023 08:44

There is no actual egg shortage. The supermarkets are creating this problem themselves by refusing to pay British egg farms what it costs to produce the eggs.

Our local Sainsbury’s Local is currently selling Italian barn eggs, despite the company pledging to sell British eggs. They’re claiming it’s all they can get due to ‘the egg crisis’. Meanwhile, our local egg farm, half a mile away, has stacks and stacks of eggs available.

The egg farms are not holding the supermarkets to ransom with unreasonable costs. Our farmers are struggling to survive, not holidaying in Barbados. You can lay (excuse the pun) this problem firmly at the door of the profiteering supermarkets. I would urge everyone who can do, to seek out and patronise their local farm shops instead.

Failing that get the shaker jars of pancake mix you add water to.

We've got this, it's actually OK.
