Just been to Tesco before work and there are literally NO eggs..... not even the really expensive ones they do.......

I am now going to make DH go to every single shop until he finds some, as the day cannot end until we've had pancakes!

@louise5754 - I don't shop at Asda, but they had loads of tomatoes at my local Tesco. It may be worth trying there?.

😂😂😂😂

BaroldFromEastenders · 21/02/2023 08:48

Probably not an option for townies but during lockdown we had several farms start selling eggs etc from machines - you pay with contactless card and the little doors pop open for you to take your stuff. If you live even a little bit rurally might be worth seeing if you have one nearby. All the ones near me have been well stocked and you’d be supporting your local farmers. Same price as in the shops too

Cherrysoup · 21/02/2023 08:50

Many hens don't really lay over winter, so a shortage is normal at this time. All egg producing hens are still on lock down due to avian flu, so conditions are not 'freerange/ideal'. As @VenusClapTrap mentions, farmers are not holidaying in Barbados. Even if you loathe Clarkson, I suggest some of you watch the 2nd episode of the new series where his farm manager, Charlie, explains that British farmers have lost up to £82K a year from European subsidies due to Brexit and have been made promises by the British government that subsidies are coming, but nothing has yet materialised.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 21/02/2023 08:51

M&S 6 ready made pancakes are 50p off if you have s Sparks card. I got mine for £1.50. Much cheaper than buying eggs and butter.

Hobbesmanc · 21/02/2023 08:53

Gosh some snippy posters on here. Since when were pancakes a luxury! Flour. Milk. Eggs. Hot from the pan with sugar and lemon. Or whatever's in the cupboard. Jam, syrup, choc spread

Not the most nutritious of teas but it's a treat. Make a savoury filling or use them as a crepe fajita.

Hope you find some eggs. When I was a kid pancake day was one of the annual highlights like bonfire day.

Supergirl1958 · 21/02/2023 08:53

I bought some from Aldi yesterday, there were plenty

Foundryside · 21/02/2023 09:00

There were very few eggs left in the supermarket I went to at the weekend, but they had loads of the pre-mixed pancake shakers where you just add water / milk.

Blueberrycreampie · 21/02/2023 09:01

Just a couple of suggestions op. Home Bargains have eggs at a very reasonable cost - they were free range and still classed as that but obviously will be barn eggs now. Waitrose has liquid egg beside the butter in a chilled area next to the ready made pastry. It would be worth trying there.

Eggs not in short supply here. Some people just love to put the boot in. As if it's normal for eggs or any other food to be scarce or for people you be unable to afford them! It's because we've got an absolutely appalling government.

Hope you find eggs and enjoy your pancakes OP.

It’s not.
Tesco sell eggs at a loss. They aren’t prepared to pay the farmers their additional costs especially now avian flu is also cutting supply.
So blame people wanting eggs cheaper than they can be supplied.

MrsMariaReynolds · 21/02/2023 09:06

Regular supermarkets seem to be in short supply on any given day, but Marks had loads of eggs in this morning.

janefondofu · 21/02/2023 09:06

@MooBaby that's really uncalled for

SomePosters · 21/02/2023 09:06

Can’t afford £2.50 for eggs… can afford the fuel to send dh round every shop till he finds them instead of finding a substitute?
I have a lot of sympathy for being broke but don’t get that one. how can you be down to not having £2.50 in change before payday but afford to throw caution to the wind so immediately after?

for great pancakes without eggs my personal preference is adding overripe banana instead.
If you don’t have one to hand Google vegan pancake recipe. Some of them don’t use any unusual ingredients just extra oil but I’ve found those ones to be a bit greasy and weird. Some thickener like banana, cornflour, flaxseed or aquafava (chickpea water) really helps bind them together

FWIW I think we have become too used to all year round plenty expecting fresh tomatoes and raspberries flown from Morocco so we can eat them fresh in February when we could use preserved is wildly unreasonable. Especially since they were so over supplied as to never run out that I spent about 10 years pulling them (and many other things) out of bins in such bulk as to make me want to weep for humanity.
The sheer scale of supermarket food waste was wild, we used to find whole wheelie bins full of prime steak or smoked salmon and spend nights trying to distribute it to everyone we knew. Fortunately the scale of this has been pulled right back in recent years and many supermarkets now offer staff the food just before it becomes waste which I think is the best possible option and it essentially tops us their wages while reducing what the company pay in waste charges

I agree the governments a shit show and it should be backing the egg producers instead of letting them be bullied by multinationals like Tesco.

Sotiredmjmmy · 21/02/2023 09:08

Vegan pancakes (but normal milk) instead, with toppings etc may not overly notice!

Maybe he's walking round the shops? Some of us live in towns and cities.

vitahelp · 21/02/2023 09:09

I hope your DH can find some eggs and you can enjoy some pancakes tonight 😊
I’m quite fortunate that I’m not a fan of pancakes and DD age 4 seems to have taken after me as she doesn’t like them either!

JimHensonWasAGenius · 21/02/2023 09:10

Stale Popadums are a great sub.

The kids wont even notice OP! 😁

Happyinheels · 21/02/2023 09:11

We tried all the local shops and supermarkets yesterday for eggs and there were none anywhere. I've read about shortages but this is the first time I've actually not been able to get hold of something. Good luck!

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 21/02/2023 09:15

Finances meant I couldn't afford them until today.

If things are that bad then just don't bother!

I'm on UC and I'm not going to be wasting petrol, driving around trying to find eggs.

Luana1 · 21/02/2023 09:16

Hope you get some eggs OP, ignore the posters suggesting vegan pancakes though, if you are not a vegan they wont satisfy your pancake desires!

Banchory · 21/02/2023 09:17

or cycling.

@SomePosters not everyone automatically jumps into a car.

Judellie · 21/02/2023 09:17

Not RTFT but in case anyone hasn't already suggested it, you can get a pack of 6 Scotch pancakes in Tesco that are currently 45p as they're on an Aldi price match.

FangsForTheMemory · 21/02/2023 09:19

R0ckets · 21/02/2023 07:29

To be honest if finances are that tight that until today you couldn't afford eggs maybe this year you skip the pancakes altogether. It seems a touch daft to spend money you don't have on something so unnecessary.

Heaven forbid that someone who’s hard up should eat an egg, follow a fun tradition or live on anything but gruel, eh?

HazelBite · 21/02/2023 09:20

Just an aside here I have frozen eggs when I have had too many in the past (I bake a lot) I mix the white and yolk together and freeze them, in quanties that I would use. Once defrosted they can be scrambled, used in baking etc

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/02/2023 09:23

Why are people being dicks?

She just wanted to buy a few eggs! In a supermarket! It's not an outrageous aspiration.

I'm sure you'll find some in the next place OP, but if not the shakey ones are fine.

musingsinmidlife · 21/02/2023 09:23

If you haven't had the money for eggs, why are you sending your DH on a city wide tour for eggs. The amount he will spend on bus / petrol / taxi - whatever he uses for transportation will be more than the eggs.
