No eggs on pancake day!!

Just been to Tesco before work and there are literally NO eggs..... not even the really expensive ones they do.......

I am now going to make DH go to every single shop until he finds some, as the day cannot end until we've had pancakes!

I'm having my Asda delivered today. I've ordered eggs for the same reason. Odds of me receiving eggs???

Plus there were no tomatoes in stock. Non whatsoever!!!

I didn't get any in my Tesco shop last night, we do have some though, the ones I ordered were because I knew we'd use all the ones we have today.

Scarzo · 21/02/2023 07:36

I use this recipe for my daughter who is allergic to eggs. They turn out quite well.

allotta · 21/02/2023 07:37

Honestly OP, it's mumsnet, don't you know to always stock up on everything way in advance and keep backups, even if you're broke?

(Although proper mumsnetters would only have fresh eggs daily from their free range chickens.)

User174863988 · 21/02/2023 07:38

I bought a bottle of mix from M&S when I saw it the other day, it was £1, I wouldn't waste my valuable eggs on pancakes

hidingbehindascreen · 21/02/2023 07:39

@MooBaby
It's a sad fact that a lot of us are struggling right now, and that's why it's important to try and do little things to keep some joy in our lives.

And on that note, I'm off to earn some cash to pay the gas bill.....

Thanks all, have a good day!!

@louise5754 - I don't shop at Asda, but they had loads of tomatoes at my local Tesco. It may be worth trying there?.

Yes I understand - I think I had underestimated how important these pancakes were to you. Apologies.

If you don’t manage to get any eggs you can always use an egg free recipe. If you look up buttermilk pancakes you can make the buttermilk by adding a teaspoon of lemon juice to cows milk. Not quite crepes but a good alternative. Best of luck 🤞

Why are people buying things for pancake day? The very point of the day is to use things up, not buy stuff you don't have Confused

As others have said, just make eggless pancakes, or have them another day when you can get some eggs.

I bought some in M&S on Sunday - their 15 mixed eggs for £2.50 are probably some of the cheapest supermarket free range eggs available.

Nope, as a non religious family, the point is to eat pancakes.

RatedAce · 21/02/2023 07:42

Thisnsite attracts some really bitter and snippy people. Happy Pancake Day OP.

BaroldFromEastenders · 21/02/2023 07:42

MooBaby · 21/02/2023 07:19

And? Doesn't mean they will be in supply today? It was predictable. Do you expect the shop to keep some in reserve for people who get paid on the 21st of the month?

Are you always like this or is the OP just lucky?

TheFretfulPorpentine · 21/02/2023 07:49

There is no legal requirement to have pancakes today and no prohibition against having them tomorrow or next week.

SweetSakura · 21/02/2023 07:50

Thanks to allergies i have to make them without cows Milk or eggs....! Hope you find either eggs or substitute ingredients

This website is v good for egg free and milk free : lucysfriendlyfoods.com/

To be honest if finances are that tight that until today you couldn't afford eggs maybe this year you skip the pancakes altogether. It seems a touch daft to spend money you don't have on something so unnecessary.

Yeah! Pancakes are only for the well off, not those ghastly poors!

itsgettingweird · 21/02/2023 07:54

I've not been able to get eggs for weeks.

Every single week my Asda order says out of stock and every single week I select an alternative more expensive box and every single week that's out if stock.

I've no idea why though!

pizzaHeart · 21/02/2023 07:56

I have some eggs but just because we were shopping on Sunday. To be honest I knew about eggs shortage, I knew about Pancake day coming but I didn’t occur to me that there might be no eggs on the day at all. I wonder if it’s a morning thing before delivery arrived.
It must be very annoying OP, hope you’ll find some.

R0ckets · 21/02/2023 07:56

Well as a ghastly poor I won't be having pancakes today as we can't afford the ingredients. If when I shop later this week I see packet mix reduced then I may get some but if not the world won't end. Unfortunately as lovely as it is to have treats its something many of us cannot afford especially as prices rise so we will have to do without.

MissMarplesbag · 21/02/2023 07:56

M&s ready made pancakes from the chiller cabinet. Job done.

bigbluebus · 21/02/2023 08:03

@TheDead There's been a shortage here for ages. The Lidl where I do my shopping has had a sign up on the egg shelf saying "maximum 2 boxes per customer " for months. I assume it's because of bird flu. No doubt many hens have had to be destroyed plus free range hens being forced indoors are possibly not laying as many eggs.

That’s really shit, I am so sorry.
Pancakes should not be an unaffordable treat for anyone.

AreBearsCatholic · 21/02/2023 08:04

Many people are very invested in pretending that it’s normal to have such a widespread shortage of a staple food, and normal to have so many people who can’t afford eggs. Did you vote for this government and know that you are responsible for this?

BlackbeardsToast · 21/02/2023 08:10

This is the first I've heard of an egg shortage.

I think they may all be in my fridge Blush

Takingthepiss · 21/02/2023 08:10

hidingbehindascreen · 21/02/2023 07:17

I couldn't actually afford to get any till today, but thanks for being such a nice person about it!

Honestly some people just like being arseholes @hidingbehindascreen

recommend this. It’s really nice. Pretty cheap. Loads of it in my local express

Vegan pancakes work fine... I make them with oat milk and the water out of acan of chickpeas. They don't taste of chickpeas at all.

What's the benefit of the chickpea water? Is it to thicken?
