I think you’ve had a lot on your plate recently @ThunderclapCloud with your mum, work, family and general day to life. It’s good that you can take a bit of time to recharge your batteries and have a think about the future too. I’m starting to feel really quite creaky and I’m only 54. Probably another delightful side effect of menopause. It’s my Achilles’ tendon that’s giving me a problem - I injured it and it’s taking a long time to sort out. The aquafit is mainly for my heart issue and I also walk the dog twice a day and go on the exercise bike every day too for half an hour but I’m still starting to feel stiff and have various aches and pains. All very tedious.
We had a total day of rain yesterday on holiday so just stayed at the cottage and I took the opportunity to make a plan of what I want to achieve and need to do when I get home. Had a lovely meal out in the evening - I have eaten and drunk so much whilst we’ve been away and will need to have a serious cut back on our return!!

Peridot1 · 13/09/2023 09:10

Morning all.

Just back from a free PT taster session at the gym that I booked yesterday. Got there nice and early. 7 days early in fact! Apparently I wasn’t the only one this morning which made slightly feel less stupid. I’m pretty busy today as going up to London again to meet a friend so just came back home. All worked out as met the gym manager finally and spoke to her about the fact I have actually booked and paid for three PT sessions but nobody has contacted me. So I don’t need the free taster session and I will be contacted later today to book my actual sessions.

So it will be a quick pre cleaners tidy round this morning and then up to London.

@ThunderclapCloud - yes it was a private check. I’d been meaning to do it for ages. All my Aussie friends do it regularly.

SummerLobelia · 13/09/2023 18:43

I agree with @petalpower, @ThunderclapCloud . You have such alot on your plate and with a very demanding job and everything going on with your mum it's no wonder you are exhausted and feeling not that great. Thanks I am glad you are having a few days off.... can you manage to really rest up? I hope you get some decent rest and thinking time. I look forward to hearing about what you decide for your future. ❤

Hope your holiday goes well @petalpower and your archilles tendon is fixed soon! I synpathise about the tedium of aches and pains. I am 50 and am lucky enough that I have got an MRI next week for an ongoing long term back issue that I simply cannot be in denial about any more. (The legacy of being a horsey teen who fell off once too often!) 🏇

Great news about the skin check too @Peridot1 .

Lapland @RunningKatie ??!! We did it about 6 years ago and it was wonderful. Just wonderful. I hope you have a glorious time.

Hi and waves to @Aria999 ; @Mumtobabyhavoc and @autumnangel Smile

I had a vaguely productive day today but 'lost' hours having coffee with a friend. Not at all lost really- a good catch up.

Now I am tidying away the dinner things and then will iron. Our wonderful cleaner comes tomorrow and the house i almost ready. She is a very early riser so she is at ours at 6.30 am (she likes to come to us then she is finished for the day by 8.30) so I need to have everything sorted before bed otherwise I am running around in my nightgown when she turns up!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/09/2023 20:35

Hi, everyone. 😊
Painting is ongoing. Almost finished last bedroom except closet. Dining area just needs one more coat of paint on one wall. The rest of the living area is already white so just one coat of white to freshen it up and match new, brighter, white. Bathroom is the same, one small wall done last week. Laundry closet will be next priority before flooring is done. Not looking forward to that... Kitchen will be a challenge as it will take a good three coats of paint and kitchens are never straightforward to paint (for me, anyway).

Everyone has lots going on here. Pace yourselves. 💖

Peridot1 · 14/09/2023 08:07

I agree with @petalpower and @SummerLobelia @ThunderclapCloud - you have had a lot going on. Definitely time for a refocus.

Im in the aches and pains camp too. Getting older is just the gift that keeps on giving isn’t it? And Menopause is a bugger too. Keep an eye on diet as it can help a lot. A lot of the ultra processed foods we eat can cause inflammation so just cutting way back on those can help.

I could not cope with my cleaner coming that early @SummerLobelia! Our cleaner in our last house used to start at 8 which was early enough for me but she started coming earlier and earlier and was there just after 7.30 one morning and we were all still in bed!

Well done on all of your painting @Mumtobabyhavoc - it must all look lovely and fresh now.

I had a lovely long lunch in London with a good friend and got home at 9 last night so not much achieved here yesterday.

Today’s list:

  • change a bed
  • chase the gym as they still haven’t sorted out my PT sessions having promised to call me yesterday
  • book some flights in Australia with my friend for next year
  • ironing - just a few bits left in the basket
  • start a window washing blitz by room
  • take DS’s mattress topper to be cleaned as too big to go in machine - DH will have to drive me as there is helpfully no parking outside.

Have a great day all.

SpiritOfEdna · 14/09/2023 11:50

morning all! I seem to have lost my last couple of days posts: I think I got distracted and just didn't submit😄

today:

  • clean up after yesterday's plasterer who came to sort out the new bathroom window surround as the dust has settled.
  • babysit an electrician who is sorting out a socket post damp course work
  • potentially look for a new joiner - he has had so many chances; he has double booked us, forgotten to put us in his diary and yesterday was ill. he is at a wedding today(!) and is due here tomorrow; but it is some distance away...
  • pick up my car later - I am getting the alloys sandblasted I could not face buying any more new tyres. Just had a picture sent, they look amazing.
  • busy work day, though meetings are dropping out of my diary giving me a bit more space.
  • sibling is helping me finish stripping my bed of it's dark varnish, then I have the dilemma of paint vrs a re-varnish in a different colour 😃
That's it for today, have a good day all. We are nearly up to 40 pages and a shiny new thread! SoE
RunningKatie · 14/09/2023 14:44

Afternoon all!
Popping in as my work computer has ground to a halt, nearly time for dc1 to be home from school too.
The return to school has been rocky, I hate the tough love we have to administer on a daily basis. It will improve but the Autumn term is always hard going.
Other than that, I've decided we need a new bed, I've not informed DH yet but I shall allow him to come shopping with me when we go. Ours is wooden and ddog crashes onto it with regular frequency which is destroying it, plus the space underneath is a haven for dust bunnies.
Other than that I'm contemplating a Marie Kondo style cull of my clothes, I've got a load packed away, and even if I lost the inches now I'm not sure they fit my lifestyle any longer.

SummerLobelia · 15/09/2023 06:43

Morning all.

I sympathise about the joiner @SpiritOfEdna We have had problems as well with people even turning up to quote when they say they will. I never understand it it's like; 'We want to give you money- you have agreed we can give you money, now where are you??!!'

I am mostly a garden day today I think but will also dump one charity shop bag. I agree with (was it @RunningKatie ?) to give up on the idea of car boot sales making my fortune. The charity shop will instead.

@Peridot1 I find our cleaner coming that early a struggle some weeks (ahem- school holidays!) but love that when I am back from the school run everything is so sparkly. I always say quite seriously that if it were not for her we would probably be divorced. She is very tolerant of us and does a wonderful job.

So garden- I am planning on ordering some of these for our pots; our neighbour has some and they look great and make it easy to move pots around and are great for drainage as well!

After that DH and I are out for lunch.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

ThunderclapCloud · 15/09/2023 07:25

Hello everyone! I agree about ultra processed food @Peridot1 I've mostly got rid of it in my diet but although DH knows intellectually how bad it is, he's really struggling to give it up. He could really do with it as he has all sorts of symptoms of inflammation etc, but of course the stuff is so addictive. He'll even choose tinned soup over home-made, the weirdo.
Although.....we are in serious talks about me leaving my job. I've loved it for a long time and it's become part of my identity. I'm quite enjoying the notion of pottering about and making him eat the blasted soup cooking and gardening (who knows, I might even make jam!) Looking after people I love in other words, instead of other people's loved ones. And take some time out to do a bit more of what I want to do, as that's been squeezed into small corners lately. We only need to give a week's notice so when I finally make a decision it could be fast, so i need to be sure!

As ever, enjoying reading what you've all achieved. I hope things settle down going forward into the term @RunningKatie It can't be easy.

I must go, my beloved is up and we've vowed to put our phones away and keep the telly off today. Today, (Matthew), I am going to do some weeding and clean my cutlery drawer. And that's probably about it 😊

SummerLobelia · 15/09/2023 07:33

Oh @ThunderclapCloud your plans sound blissful. You definitely deserve time to yourself to do things for YOU. 🌻

Peridot1 · 15/09/2023 07:47

@RunningKatie - happy bed shopping! Get one with storage underneath. We have two that lift up to out things under and one with drawers. Mine is the one with drawers and I keep the bedding for my bed in one and the out of season duvet in the other.

@SpiritOfEdna - I was actually just thinking the other day how lucky you seem to be with tradesmen turning up to do things when they say. And then came the tale of the joiner!

@ThunderclapCloud - my DH prefers bought soup too although the fresh chilled ones. I think because my soups tend to taste of the vegetables they are made with!

Good luck with your decision making.

@SummerLobelia - I like those pot caddies! Great idea. May invest in a few.

My list for today will pretty much be yesterday’s list as not much was achieved! I did change a bed. Including the mattress and pillow protectors which got washed yesterday. The actual bedding is currently being washed and will hopefully get dried outside today.

We are having some work done in the garden so I was making lots of tea and being called on for opinions and checks and the day disappeared.

Have a great day all.

Oh @ThunderclapCloud your plans sound blissful. You definitely deserve time to yourself to do things for YOU. 🌻

I think I'm going to write my notice today. I'm very excited. I have been journalling a bit to get some thoughts down and that has been helpful. DH is so supportive. He gets cross on my behalf when work starts pushing their luck on getting me to pick up extra hours. It's the way of the industry unfortunately but people do end up taking on too much. Thank you for your cheerleading!

ThunderclapCloud · 15/09/2023 10:06

@RunningKatie your description of bed shopping and DH made me grin. I too can vouch for having one with drawers underneath. I still think we have a new mattress but actually it's ten years old!

I also concur about the difficulty in getting someone just to do a job. I see it within our family and for some of our clients.

@Peridot1 what a shocker, the soup tasting of actual vegetables! I might see if I can go via shop bought chilled soups.... I'm still attempting to rest a bit so perhaps I'll leave smug cooking till I actually retire (as will take on grocery shopping at that point)

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/09/2023 15:36

All the power to you, Thunder!

Painting today. Hope to finish last bedroom and I WILL finish dining area. 😁

SpiritOfEdna · 15/09/2023 16:26

@ThunderclapCloud good luck with fresh pastures.

soo... the joiner has admitted defeat. All the wood in the hall has gone and he will refund us the advance we paid. We will just have to recarpet the stairs as they are - they are structurally sound and think next year about ripping them out for a whole new set. I am trying to let my annoyance go. It has helped that work is very quiet today.

I got my car back with its georgous shiny refurbed alloys; the guy said he would put the pictures up on instagram; what I hadn't expected was the 'halloween has come early with this horror show' narrative. I also have to buy a new tyre - it would fail an MOT with one of them; so I have booked that in for Monday.

The rest of the day will be:

  • another walk for SpiritDoggo although she is sparko next to me
  • put back all the hall stuff that I moved for the joiner
  • maybe pop to Halfords to pick up a bike cover I ordered online.
  • general tidy up so not having to do it tomorrow and can enjoy the weekend
Enjoy what is left of the day, SoE
Peridot1 · 16/09/2023 08:55

Morning all.

Happy retirement @ThunderclapCloud! Don’t put us all to shame with all of your free time and get loads done will you? 😄

A whole new set of stairs sounds like a very big job @SpiritOfEdna! Yikes.

Yesterday I did get the bedding washed and dried outside, plus my dressing gowns. I seem to have quite a few for various temperatures. Also did some gardening clearing out the vegetable beds with DH. Well I cleared some stuff and he weeded the large bed we never used. Gave up on the corn I’d planted as I think it went in too late and didn’t get enough water.

Also had a bit of an argument with DH about our new patio area up in the back corner. We had planned a type of pergola but I don’t want much ‘roof’ or roof supports even which he couldn’t get his head around. So have scrapped the pergola plan and it will just be a corner patio with some beds on two sides made from sleepers and a fence panel on one back edge with a nice climber.

Today will be more washing probably. And a bit of gardening. Am off for an eyebrow tint and pedicure this morning first though.

Have a great day all.

petalpower · 16/09/2023 12:53

I’m sure you’ll be happy with your decision if you do decide to retire @ThunderclapCloud . Great that your DH is being so supportive too. It sounds as though you’ve supported lots of people through your job in the past and now it’s time for you to have more time for those closest to you.
I’ve been clearing vegetable beds as well this morning @Peridot1 . It’s all looking very end of the season. My sweetcorn did well this year but I think it’s more luck than any sort of gardening expertise on my part! I need to harvest the sweetcorn as in the past rats have got there before me. Courgettes are all picked and looking very harvest festival like in the trug in my kitchen. I think I’ll make some sort of relish or chutney with them if I can find a good recipe.
It’s a beautiful day here and I’ve got all the post holiday washing done and out on the line.

Aria999 · 17/09/2023 14:00

Hi everyone!

@SpiritOfEdna that's annoying about the joiner! Probably better that than if he started and didn't finish though. Can you get a different one? I have had very mixed success with contractors. Our bathroom refurbishment was an expensive waste of money and very stressful, we all hate the finished result.

@ThunderclapCloud sounds good! I hope you enjoy it!

@RunningKatie I got very into Marie Kondo, I am the kind of person who never throws anything away. I did make some decisions I later regretted though (I was trying to be tough). The abiding legacy has been her vertical fold method. Our drawers are beautiful! Except DS drawers because he pulls everything out onto the floor if he can't find something.

Last week was one of my 'drop everything for work' weeks so everything needs doing again (the three baskets of clean laundry in the bedroom are back). Top priority is still fixing the kids' toilet. I also need to finish our financial planning and decide what maintenance to do on the house this year.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/09/2023 19:53

Just a quick, Hello. 😊
Still painting down to the wire. Still need to paint two closets. Sounds easy, but there is always a bit of repair involved which is time consuming. Plan was to finish two bedroom walls last night as each only needed one coat of paint. Took two hours to repair one wall and baseboards, so did that then took a closer look at wall two and found a half dozen dings to fill. Did that. Painted wall 1. Have had a lazy morning watching a doc, surfing net and sipping latte. Going to take Havoc out for play then resume work after lunch while Havoc naps. Flooring work begins on Wednesday. 🙀
Looks like our thread is close to full?
Happy puttering, everyone. 😊

Peridot1 · 18/09/2023 08:35

Morning all.

@petalpower - we had loads of courgettes too. And DH doesn’t really like them. So I’ve made a few batches of green soup for the freezer for me for lunches. Have another few to use up so will do another batch. I did spot a recipe for a soup with courgettes, potatoes and cheese which DH make like so might try that.

Busy week here it feels. Or maybe it’s just Monday morning feeling. Our garden work is continuing so the builders will be back this morning. I reversed the car into one of the skips on Saturday so need to take the car to be looked at. Nothing major but still annoying. And have a guy coming to clean sofas and rugs this morning.

Today:

  • washing - one load in
  • fold and put yesterdays washing away
  • clear area for rug and sofas to be cleaned
  • empty dishwasher and tidy kitchen
  • vacuum
  • lots of other bits I can’t remember at the moment!

Have a great day everyone

SpiritOfEdna · 18/09/2023 11:14

Morning - it is bucketing down here, so plans for tidying up the garden have gone - unless the rains stops

  • tyres again today! Mobile tyre man came to replace the tyre the alloy man said was delaminated this morning - DONE
  • bring exercise stuff down and stash under work desk - DONE
  • paint touch ups in the 'new' bedroom, fill in some holes where pictures had been up
  • clean splodge of paint off the sofa - DONE
  • sort bike out in garden - it's not on the rack correctly
  • clean pantry shelves - there are 5 shelves - 5 minute per shelf should be enough to bin out of date stuff and give the shelf a quick swipe.
I can tell I had a very good night's sleep last night 😄 Have a good day all, SoE
SummerLobelia · 18/09/2023 11:43

Morning! Dashing out so just wanted to wave hello and run!

ThunderclapCloud · 18/09/2023 11:50

Morning! Decision made! I'm surprised at just feeling excited!
All the exclamation marks sorry!

It is bucketing down here too Edna

I am hoping to do a lot of pottering but I'm currently rooted to the sofa. I do have a couple of bags to go to the charity shop. I am wondering if i will become organised and take up ironing. That would be a first. Maybe do some Christmas crafts!

DH is still aiming to work to 67 and so I have plans to love him and look after him and make his life easy. I do still intend to make him cook and do a share of the washing. He is not one for diy of any description so i am going to take my inspiration from you lot and do some bits and bobs around the place. I'm hoping we'll have some weekend adventures together now, as I've worked a lot of them recently so he's done his own thing.

I'm going to go and make an apple pie 😂

petalpower · 18/09/2023 13:29

Is that you finished with work now or have you got to go back at all @ThunderclapCloud ? Oh my word, an apple pie!😂
I’ve currently got a massive pan of courgette and tomato chutney bubbling away on the hob. I’ve doubled the recipe to use up all the courgettes from the garden and now can’t fit all the other ingredients in my biggest cooking pot. Nearly there, keep shoving more tomatoes in as the chutney reduces and leaves a bit more space.
This morning I’ve:

  • taken DD to the station as she’s gone to London for a few days to catch up with uni friends
  • chatted to DS who was driving to the first day of his new job and needed a few encouraging words
  • picked up my prescription
  • popped into the supermarket to get additional items for the chutney
This afternoon is going to be admin jobs and ironing. Also keeping an eye on the washing on the line as we’re due for rain later. Have a good day all.
SummerLobelia · 18/09/2023 14:05

yay @ThunderclapCloud !! I am so so so pleased for you. Your plans to nurture yourself and DH sound wonderful!!

And weekend adventures!! Perfect. Smile 🌹🌻
