Oh yes! I am going for 3 different colours of climbing geraniums. Geraniums remind me of a very much loved grandmother and I always think of her when i grow them. ❤I'd like a pale purple in there and cream then a third colour as well.

Aria999 · 21/01/2023 17:52

That sounds beautiful

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/01/2023 18:11

@ComeTheSpringLobelia Clever name change! I like that geraniums remind you of your grandmother. That's a lovely association. Sounds like you've managed to do a lot so far today! 👏
@Aria999 Yes, Vancouver. Under clouds today. 3degrees with snow expected in the mountains - which are hidden atm.

Still feeling quite tired, but unsure if die to infection I'm getting over, Havoc waking 3x at night or a combo... Likely a combo.

Plan for today is laundry and sorting Havoc's room. I've already had two cups of tea and haven't started yet, though....

RunningKatie · 21/01/2023 18:15

Cannot wait for spring! It's freezing here.
We have a sleepover this evening, am going to need a small wine to get through.
Today I've been deep cleaning the main bathroom. Including peeling a massive blob toothpaste off the radiator, I've decided not to ask how it ended up there!
I try and read Nigel Slater's Christmas Chronicles every year, today I managed to get his kitchen diary from a charity shop for £2.50. Lovely bargain! I find him and Monty Don very soothing.

DressingForRevenge · 22/01/2023 09:01

@ComeTheSpringLobelia i could use your green fingers here. Growing here is hard, but I’ve found some trees which should grow (pinus nigra) - however as this isn’t my “forever home” I’m dragging my heels. Perhaps I should just start them in pots and see what the future brings.

I still have a sick child who was supposed to be reciting Burns tonight for the haggis - but I think he’s too sick. Usually anything to get stuck into the giant village haggis - but he doesn’t want any - so must be sick!

I managed to get a bit of work done yesterday and had a “duh” moment when I realised I just need to buy a pole and tiny rollers to paint the bits I can’t reach. Amazon plan!

Its miserable here with a strong south-westerly so I’ll be inside plotting total world domination (or at least figuring out how to paint the kitchen which looks fiddly and will require a bit of polyfilla).

Peridot1 · 22/01/2023 09:44

Morning all!

Nice new name @ComeTheSpringLobelia! Could definitely do with spring. Minus 6 here this morning and the field at the back has disappeared into the fog. Your geraniums plan sounds lovely. We are planning doing things to the garden this year too and DH has been researching which plants deer don’t like! They come in and nibble my roses and geraniums. Cheeky sods.

I love haggis @DressingForRevenge. Many years of St Andrew’s Balls and Burns Suppers in various expat locations. Shame DS is too unwell to have it.

I would definitely say it’s the combo of non sleeping baby and your body fighting off infection @Mumtobabyhavoc.

Hope you survived the sleepover @RunningKatie. I think I have Nigel’s Kitchen Diaries - must read it! We have quite a few of his cookbooks. And I attempt to read The Christmas Chronicles every year but fail.

Not much planned here today. DH and I are both having our fourth covid boosters this afternoon . I’m clearing up after having the neighbours over last night for dinner. Planning a bit of a lazy day.

Yesterday I bagged up the clothes I’d sorted for charity and some other bits. Sorted out a pile of magazines and moved my Christmas cookery books into the study to a newly tidied shelf.

Have a lovely Sunday all.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 22/01/2023 10:25

Morning! I do not have very green fingers it has to be said. More flail around and kill things fingers mostly.

I realised (after DH told me) that the poor toad must have been hibernating. So I have gone back to where I disturbed him and put down leaf litter and the like so he is hopefully safe for the rest of the winter. He was very handsome indeed. I have a bit of a weakness for frogs, lizards and toads. I'd love to see a grass snake in my garden... bucket list!

DH is doing his manly hobby today so i am taking the Dcs for Sunday lunch. Then ironing and getting ready for school.

RunningKatie · 22/01/2023 16:45

Last night i sorted enough paperwork to half fill the shredder. Today I've mended a coat and some trousers. Fingers crossed the coat sees us to the end of winter. DS is very heavy on coat destruction! Heavens knows how he does it.
The sleepover went well although I am shattered now. It has made the weekend whizz by so fast as well. Next weekend I have a 3 day weekend, so excited!

Aria999 · 22/01/2023 20:08

This afternoon's project, tidy DS7 room. Wish me luck.

I still haven't figured out how to get him to help. He says he likes it messy but actually he loves it when I tidy it.

I think it's partly that he's really bad at tidying, and partly a philosophy of why have a dog and bark yourself #parentingfail

But I have tried both threats and bribery, nothing really works.

Peridot1 · 23/01/2023 10:43

Morning all. -7 here this morning. I’m on the sofa under a blanket and don’t want to do anything. We need milk but DH has volunteered to go thankfully.

@Aria999 sadly it doesn’t get better. You should see DS’s room. He is 21. He does occasionally tidy it. Mainly just appears downstairs with a laundry basket of rubbish.

DH and I had our covid boosters yesterday. Arm a bit sore this morning but feeling fine otherwise.

Today I will do the usual laundry and vacuuming. The dog needs a good brush so may do that instead of taking her for a walk. She’s hurt herself the last two days slipping I think. I’ll take her into the garden for a wander but not for an actual walk. I will continue my bedroom sorting. Strip the spare bed. And hibernate under a blanket with my book I think!

SpiritOfEdna · 23/01/2023 13:41

Morning - where did the weekend go? The weekend was full on - took TheNiece to a trampoline park on Saturday - I need to start acting my age!

Sunday got up at the crack of dawn to finish clearing the patio/yard for the guys to re-pave. Emptied the contents of all dead plants into bin bags and did a tip run with everything else waiting to go, emptied the contents of 2 sheds into the house, plus garden furniture, live plants into the house....... all done. Bit of a disaster with one shed, the padlock wouldn't open - I managed to get in through the top and lift stuff out. But all done. Got a phone call at 3pm yesterday to say they needed to delay by two days because, well, because. I slept very soundly last night! At least we are ready for them :-)

  • I need to get a swim in either tonight or tomorrow am to practise ready for my swimming lesson tomorrow night. If I can face getting up at 6am tomorrow to go, I will do tomorrow. I have done the trick of having my bag ready at the door if I can persuade myself to go tonight, which is the sensible option.
  • just heard a thud heralding the arrival of the dog's toothpaste + kit - a little inspection while she snoozed on my knee showed she is in desperate need. If she doesn't like it she'll let me know!
  • pinching the idea of ferns in the dark spots of the yard for when we can.
  • I saw a beautiful photo of my favourite tree online yesterday, so in between meetings this afternoon, I will prepare a small canvas.
  • read another chapter of my book

Hope all the snotty, UTI'ed mnetters are better Flowers for all

SoE

petalpower · 23/01/2023 16:47

Did you go in the trampolines too @SpiritOfEdna ?
So cold here today. Think there’s another couple of days before it warms up slightly. DH is away for work until Thursday night so I’m home alone with the dog. My car has also gone back with DS until the end of the week so I’m in the little old car that was the car we bought when the children learned to drive and DD uses when she’s home from uni. As he left DS remarked that one of the tyres looked very low so this morning I went to the garage to get it sorted and stick a bit more petrol in. Also booked my car in for an oil change next week as a message has come up in the dash for that. Made some smug soup for lunch (carrot, lentil and chickpea with feta)and did the ironing. Out tonight to one of my music activities if the car makes it that far!

SpiritOfEdna · 23/01/2023 18:43

@petalpower I do! I have a goal to go down the vertical slide there. I get to the top and have to climb back down ☹️ Have told TheNiece she can give me a (gentle) shove next time.

I got to the pool, had my practise swim ready for tomorrow.

also, that soup sounds delicious.

petalpower · 23/01/2023 18:49

I think my trampolining days are long gone @SpiritOfEdna ! You sound very daring!
The soup was lovely and very filling. It’s a good food recipe.

Aria999 · 23/01/2023 21:58

@petalpower that soup sounds gorgeous! I still haven't made soup. I landed another short project today (yay!) so the vegetables may have to wait indefinitely.

Peridot1 · 24/01/2023 08:21

Morning all.

You were very busy on Sunday @SpiritOfEdna. Frustrating that they then cancelled but at least it’s all ready.

That soup does sound yummy @petalpower. I have some sweet potatoes to use up and I was planning a soup - might try a version of yours using sweet potato too.

I didn’t achieve too much yesterday. Finally finished sorting my underwear drawer. I had dumped everything into a basket so it’s all gone back into the drawer now. Packed up the littles piles of things I have for the charity shop into a box.

Today I have some admin to get done. And I will finally go and pick up my bracelet from the jewellers and take a few bags of clothes to the charity boxes in the car park there. Strip the spare bed which I didn’t do yesterday.

The sale of my Dad’s house completed yesterday so the new owners are in. Very strange feeling. One of my sisters picks her oldest DS up from school by the house and she took a photo of the house with their car in the drive which was very odd to see.

SpiritOfEdna · 24/01/2023 09:01

morning all. @Peridot1 I sometimes end up driving past my old family home and complain they have uprooted all the lovely bushes I had in the front to give some privacy for the front windows - I haven't lived there for 20 years ! When I dream about being 'home' it is always in that house, So understand the strange feeling.

Today

  • swimming stuff is by door ready for lesson tonight
  • hand wash 2 x jumpers
  • clean some more of the terracotta pots
  • go through some of the shed stuff and see what can be chucked out

Have a good day all

SoE

RunningKatie · 24/01/2023 09:28

Morning! Today I need to write a food shopping list and negotiate with dh who is going!
I've also got to message MIL about what dd would like for her birthday. It's so close to Christmas, ideas are few and far between.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 24/01/2023 10:41

Morning!

Not alot going on here except that I am hoping to negotiate with DH that he does the school run this afternoon!

I am painting some pots and planting some plants in our dark corner. Plus have alot of life admin to do today.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 24/01/2023 14:13

Afternoon all. I have hit a major slump. I did a couple of hours on the bit of the garden I wanted to tackle but and it has only yielded more and more stuff to do. I feel quite depressed about it. DH says 'wait until the summer' but he always says that and nothing seems to get done. It seems a huge huge task.

I have promised myself that I will dedicate an hour a day to it every day until Monday and then review. Maybe I will feel better if I appear to have achieved something. It is such an awful corner and it needs repaving to begin with before it could ever look good but that is a nonstarter for the moment at least.

The life admin is also getting me down. Feeling a bit hamster-wheelish right now!

That is my moan for the afternoon. Blush Hope everyone is going well.

Peridot1 · 24/01/2023 14:31

I’m feeling a bit slumpish too today @ComeTheSpringLobelia. I’m impressed you are even getting out into the garden though at the moment. Far too cold for me! We also have a lot to do in ours. Doing an hour a day is a good plan.

I think I’m becoming a recluse. I should go out but I just can’t seem to. I think I’m just going to strip the spare bed for now and read my book.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 24/01/2023 18:45

Thanks @Peridot1 How did your self care plan of reading go? Are you reading anything good? i am currently reading The Salt Path by Raynor Winn.

I marginally cheered myself up by booking the DCs and myself to a daytrip to London to go to the National Gallery in a couple of Saturdays. DH is busy and I thought we could go and do arty stuff and then have an afternoon tea.

Then I found this via Dr Google and this cheered me up as well.
www.rhs.org.uk/garden-inspiration/conditions/what-to-do-with-a-dark-corner-in-your-garden

Not least because I have alot of wood and branches which I had vaguely though of putting togetehr as a bug hotel, but actually would go very well in my own dark corner as a semi sort of, wanna-be stumpery. And it might help make the area slightly more aesthetically lovely as well. So, [girds loins] Things Can Be Done.

DH has buggered his back up. He has had twinges for a few weeks which he has ignored but today kindly got compost out of my car for me and it went. He's tucked up in bed. I might soon join him with my book and a hot chocolate.

Hope everyone has a lovely evening.

petalpower · 24/01/2023 20:11

That’s impressive to be spending an hour on the garden each day at this time of year @ComeTheSpringLobelia . I haven’t achieved much today but have been quite busy. Aqua fit this morning then visiting care home auntie this afternoon and dog walk with a friend later. Auntie wasn’t well so managed to be around for the doctor’s visit. Poor thing has a chest infection and is now on antibiotics.

DressingForRevenge · 25/01/2023 08:34

@SpiritOfEdna im glad I’m not the only nut-job tut-tutting about people who bought my house YEARS ago. 😂 I had a wee small-holding in France where I kept my horses. They’ve covered the grounds in what looks like sheds (???? I can think of no legitimate reason) and sold off a portion to developers. I get this from google maps and because it’s so rural they don’t have good satellite images.

@ComeTheSpringLobelia i saw a bit of your post the other day so ordered seeds. I’ve accepted that my climate just isn’t suitable for tomatoes/cucumbers/melons until I can justify sinking the best part of £5k into a solid polytunnel. Today, in January - tomatoes are considerably cheaper than £5k - check back next year. 😉

Ive ordered polufilla, a scraped and some rollers to reach the bits I can’t so I can finally finish the painting I started last august when I got ill.

can you believe we’ve been going nearly a year? We should al be in palaces by now.

Peridot1 · 25/01/2023 08:36

I loved The Salt Path @ComeTheSpringLobelia. Have just read her follow up which wasn’t nearly as good I thought unfortunately. Currently reading the third Richard Osman - The Bullet That Missed. It’s ok. DS bought it for me for Christmas.

I achieved a few small jobs yesterday. Cancelled the insurance on Dad’s house, went through records to see who has spent what on things related to the house since Dad died so they can be repaid out of the Estate, sorted a bag of greetings cards that I’ll never use and put them into the charity shop box I’m getting ready to go, stripped the spare bed, resorted old gold jewellery to sell. And brushed the dog. A bit. And packed up a jacket that DS ordered but needs to be returned.

Today I will go out! Jewellers to pick up my bracelet and take the gold jewellery, post office, charity boxes. And a trip to a Next to get the security tag removed from a jacket DS ordered. Might treat myself to coffee and cake while I’m out.
