We will probably be the same about Dads house @SpiritOfEdna and @DressingForRevenge. There is a home improvement show on Irish tv called Room to Improve and the architect always does an amazing job but goes waaay over budget. My sister has already said if they get him in she will be a bit sick. Grin The house needs a lot doing anyway though so it will change. As it should really.

SpiritOfEdna · 25/01/2023 09:24

Morning

Swimming last night, my legs are killing me. I need to go and practice before next week's lesson.... The pavers were due to start today, now looking like Thursday, taking bets on whether they will delay because, well, Friday.

I am reading Lessons in Chemistry. I am wavering about whether I like it or not, the misogyny is as depressing as it it meant to be; at the same time I am not cheering on Elizabeth Zott. I am also reading Atomic Habits.

Today's list:

  • carry on sorting out shed stuff
  • walk into the post office in the village and get some jiffy bags
  • make some soup (I found the recipe :-)) + chilli

I may need to decamp to the kitchen today to work :-)

have a good day

SoE

RunningKatie · 25/01/2023 10:20

Morning! I read Atomic Habits, was really good, obviously I've not managed to implement it all because my to do list is over run with good intentions.
I do now try and do star jumps whilst the kettle boils so it's a start.
Today is a wfh day, ddog and I are upstairs, one of us working, one is curled up on the bed snoring!

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 25/01/2023 14:56

Afternoon all.

I hope your Aunt is better soon @petalpower There is such a nasty cold cough thing going around. I am glad she has antibiotics for her chest.

I am loving the idea of star jumps @RunningKatie ! When I was working in the office more regularly I used to do startjumps (10) every time I went to the loo. Until reception downstairs complained I was making the ceiling shake Grin

Thanks for the headsup on Lessons in Chemistry @SpiritOfEdna !! It's my turn to choose the book for bookclub!

I really love the Richard Osman books @Peridot1 . I really hope that Steven Spielberg gets on with making the film ( as he bought the rights). Although I am sure I will disagree with the casting!

I wish I were in a Palace @DressingForRevenge ! Although when I do stop and think there have been some massive changes. Although at present it feels two steps forward and 47 steps back at times.

My hour in the dark corners of the garden is starting to show some results. I bought bark chippings to cover up an in sight concrete area that cannot be removed right now. Note to self- you always need about double the bark chippings you think you will need. It's underneath a holly tree so actually looks quite good now. I am sure I will have to sweep it often but it is a great deal better.

I then planted a Miners Merlot euphobia in one bit of the dark corner. It is a beautiful burgundy colour and apparently has lime green flowers during flowering time. It should bush out a bit I hope. I also planted a fatsia japonica. Next name change might be FatsiaLobelia. It would certainly be appropriate. Grin . I don't actually have any idea what I am doing but guess I am learning as I go.

Now I need to get back to depressing life admin. Then school run then the usual evening extravaganza of cooking, homework, bath, reading, bed.

Have a good evening everyone!

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 25/01/2023 14:59

in sight was meant to be 'unsightly'.

DressingForRevenge · 25/01/2023 16:01

I feel seen with “Unsightly Fatsia”. 😂

Aria999 · 25/01/2023 22:42

Hi everyone!

That sounds like good progress on the garden @ComeTheSpringLobelia!

I am feeling sorry for myself with a sore throat and am skipping Kung fu (have retreated to sofa with kids and paw patrol).

As I have some work this week, all daily projects have ceased. The sheets are overdue for a change and the entire wardrobe of everyone is piled up in two massively overflowing clean laundry baskets in our bedroom.

Still not sure how people function with two full time jobs and a family.

Peridot1 · 26/01/2023 09:02

Great progress on the garden @ComeTheSpringLobelia. I think euphorbias can spread a lot - they self seed I think so you may want to keep an eye. (And I could be completely wrong but I vaguely remember being warned off them at one point.)

I too have the Atomic Habits book but have never gotten around to actually reading it. Like many of the self help books I buy! I also don’t think my knees would take star jumps.

hope you feel better @Aria999. I am not sure how people manage that either.

So I didn’t go out yesterday. Again. Cleaners came an hour and a half early which threw me and then I ended up doing some admin stuff for my dad’s estate with DH which totally fried my brain. But we have a spreadsheet of the figures and hopefully will get it all finalised next week.

Today DS is doing his Next stuff as has to go out anyway. So I will do post office, jewellers and charity clothes boxes. Need to get DH to double check curtain measurements with me and order curtains. And I need to make soup.

Have a great day all.

RunningKatie · 26/01/2023 09:16

I've only had a full time job for 4 weeks @Aria999 but I can assure you, my house is like a tornado has passed through and despite dh stepping up, the plates are being spun furiously.
Is it bad that I am hoping schools are closed for the strikes, just so we have one morning without all the rushing?

Today we need to sort birthday cards and wrap a gift. And I need to sort food for a work "fuddle" not sure how regional that word is. Dh has never heard of it!

DressingForRevenge · 26/01/2023 09:33

I too have an unread copy of Atomic Habits. 😂

Just a single-parent family here and I took this job when we started the thread last year. The house permanently looks a state and at the weekend my eldest declared he was moving in with his dad because it’s “nice and tidy”. I’m afraid I lost my shit about him not even doing the ONE job which is his responsibility. (His dad’s house is nice because he’s a tyrant, his gf is a “good wife” and they don’t have pretentious things like books/hobbies 😉).

today I will, will, WILL take stiff to the charity shop. Pinky-promise.

SpiritOfEdna · 26/01/2023 10:40

Finished Lessons in Chemistry, Felt like it was written with Nicole Kidman in mind as lead character and Olivia Coleman as the neighbour/best friend. :-) Some funny bits though! Garden guys can't come today because of a broken down van. I will have to carry on with masses of pots with plants in for a while longer.

Wading through treacle today, not a busy day work-wise as it is a national holiday for my teams out in India. I am literally moving things from one side of my desk to another today. Am hoping the walk with the dog at lunch time will clear the cobwebs so I can crack on this afternoon. But I'll do some small things for the rest of this morning:

  • work out from mortgage statement which part of the mortgage is coming to the end of term
  • A list of work things I need to get done this afternoon to tick off.

Have a good day all.

SoE

Aria999 · 26/01/2023 12:12

Good morning all.

@RunningKatie 4 weeks in already! How's it going, do you like it?

Wow @DressingForRevenge hats off to you. Your DS has a nerve!

DressingForRevenge · 26/01/2023 18:41

@SpiritOfEdna that book sounds hard-going. I like me a good, hearty apocalypse and within the next hour will finish “end of the world running club” which starts in Edinburgh. Our heroes have a run in with gun-toting baddies in exactly the same place my dad did nearly 50 years ago as they leave Edinburgh on foot.

@Aria999 teenage delights. 🤷‍♀️

I made it to the charity shop to dump my bin-bag of clothes. I always feel embarrassed to do so wondering whether I have in fact been wearing rags and nobody in their right minds would want my cast-offs! So I was delighted to see my previous donations on the rails and on shelves.

I had to stop on the way because this fat poppet was sat at the side of the road. 😁🦭

Daily Project Round 3
SpiritOfEdna · 26/01/2023 18:46

@DressingForRevenge but did you sing to it ?😀

DressingForRevenge · 26/01/2023 19:03

It sang back! 😂

Peridot1 · 27/01/2023 09:31

Your DS is brave in the way only teens can be @DressingForRevenge. And thoughtless in the way teens can be too.

I am in awe of all of you working people. I haven’t worked for years. And have become much lazier as a result.

Ive been meaning to look at Lessons in Chemistry. I saw quite a few people reading it last summer when we were on holiday.

I did go out yesterday! Three bags to the charity clothing box in the car park, posted DS’s return, picked up my bracelet and dropped gold jewellery in for valuation.

Today I’m back in hibernation mode other than walking the dog!

Today’s jobs are to measure for the curtains and order them, check my Australian visa is still valid, tidy the spare bedroom so I can start to use that for getting my stuff together to pack and brush the dog.

have a good Friday everyone.

SpiritOfEdna · 27/01/2023 11:32

Morning. Thankfully it's Friday - the dog is sick and sorry for herself and doesn't understand where there are strangers in and out the house - poor thing. Am sure she will perk up when it is time to go for her walk :-)

Which means.......the guys doing the paving have turned up, they have worked quickly - all the old flags are gone (hurrah, the last remaining bodge job from the previous owners will be gone) and when it's done I won't be brushing up pools of water into the drains after the rain.

Tasks for today:

  1. Sort out a collection for Red Cross of clothes, accessories.
  2. Hoover! There's a thin layer of dust everywhere from the dog. Good job we love her.
  3. Get my bag ready for a swim first thing tomorrow
  4. See what TheNiece wants to do tomorrow if anything - she is starting to talk about planning to meet up with school friends in town of a Saturday now - lol, we are being dumped :-)

Small list for today but a long work one :-(

Have a good day,

SoE

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 27/01/2023 17:46

Hi everyone.

I hope your poor dog feels better soon @SpiritOfEdna !

Thanks for the headsup re euphorbia self seeding @Peridot1 ! i will have to keep an eye on it as I really don't want it to take over!

Thats a wonderful picture of the seal @DressingForRevenge ! I hope your DS has apologised also.

I have had a funny bitty sort of day where I had aload of appointments over the place and not enough time between them to do anything useful.

In the middle of all that someone crashed into our parked and unoccupied car -doing a shedload of damage and drove off without leaving their details.

In an entirely unrelated coincidence we got confirmation we can complete on our proposed purchase of a garage hopefully on Monday. Which we thought would be incredibly useful to save us parking on the road as parking is really difficult around here. Hmm Hopefully that goes through without a hitch.

I will finish what I can do in my dark corner tomorrow, two days before my self imposed deadline. It looks tremendously better but won't really look good until we get it re-paved. I am very envious @SpiritOfEdna !! I have done the following;

  • cleared away the rubbish and got it ready for the tip
  • pruned back dead wood and ivy and cleared space for new plants
  • planted three ferns
  • planted the fatsia japonica thing
  • planted the burgundy euphorbia
  • laid down bark chips
  • moved a potted bamboo to cover up a holey bit in the wall
  • repainted the small black bistro set that is there
  • put down ornamental bark everywhere
  • made the roof of the bin shed into a type of living garden by repurposing some old grey coloured pots and planting them with purple flowering heather
I need to plant up two structural plants to go in pots on either side of the entrace, but have not yet found the right sort so will keep looking. But I am very pleased and proud of what I have achieved. I also want to buy a couple of bug hotels to attach to the doors of the bin house.

For this weekend I need to get stuck into the dining room as we have people for dinner next week. Then Monday I will start on the terrace on the other side of the house.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

RunningKatie · 27/01/2023 18:45

I'm loving my new job thank you@Aria999 - got to start pushing myself out of my comfort zone a bit as it's a senior role so I need to be go getting and proactive. Not entirely my skill set!
Loved the seal photo, we live near a lake and get a flock of Canada Geese flying over, it's such a fab sight and sound.
This weekend I'm going to tidy out my underwear drawer, it's got all jumbled so I'm probably wearing the top of a pile over and over again.

DressingForRevenge · 28/01/2023 08:39

Oh no what utter fuckers @ComeTheSpringLobelia 😔. Your garden work sounds brilliant. The hail showers won’t stop here until May so I’m holding off planting anything and will break out the heated propagator in a month or so.

@RunningKatie im so glad the job is working out! I’m having a mild panic here as my contract finishes at the end of March. All island work is physical and I’m still not up to that (will I ever be?) - and realistically can only do 3/4 hrs a day remote from a computer. Or, should I just “give up” and become FT disabled/retire? 🤷‍♀️ It’ll all come out in the wash I suppose.

My charming son has not apologised, however has made no further mention of his wild intention… my youngest and I watched “Kevin and Perry” last night and got the giggles with all the “it’s so unfair”.

Have we lost our wonderful @fluster ? 😔

Today I’m going to attack a wobbly curtain bracket with raw-plugs and a power-drill. Grrr!

petalpower · 28/01/2023 11:00

Oh my word @ComeTheSpringLobelia you’ve been incredible busy in the garden. What sort of low life would damage a car and not leave their details. Sounds like the new garage is just what’s needed.
Love the seal picture @DressingForRevenge !
Where has @Alltheclouds gone? I hope you’re ok.

Peridot1 · 28/01/2023 15:15

Hi all.

Am impressed with your garden work @ComeTheSpringLobelia but not impressed with your car issue. So annoying. No chance of any cctv or ring doorbell footage from any neighbours?

Glad the job is going well @RunningKatie. It doesn’t seem that long ago since you started.

I love the seal pic too @DressingForRevenge. Difficult decisions ahead for you. As you say things often just come out in the wash.

I had a nice potter around a small town near us this morning. Had an eye test booked so did that and had a bit of a wander and had a quick lunch. Bought some toiletries bits for my holiday. Ordered new glasses as apparently I’m now blind. Well not quite but a lot more shortsighted than 18 months ago. Not much else planned today.

FatSealSmugSoup · 30/01/2023 07:39

NC again but should be obvious. 😉

@Peridot1 aha! I love/hate choosing new glasses. Last year I was a little more adventurous then kicked myself afterwards that my hadn’t gone for the full-on “Dame Edna’s” (one way to add colour to your face without battling liquid eyeliner!), but the woman told me nobody had bought them because they’re just a step too far. Maybe next time I’ll be brave and wear purple.

@ComeTheSpringLobelia My seeds all arrived on Saturday and I’m very excited! The tree ones had a note saying to keep them in the fridge. Whatever - it’s not like it’s 30 degrees here 😉, but they can stay on the butter shelf until I’ve researched more.

I’m worries about our @Alltheclouds - she did say the lunatics were driving her demented and she was in the brink of leaving. I hope we’re not the lunatics…

Today’s small job will be to clean out old and suspicious jars in the fridge and stick them through the dishwasher. I’ve got some live sauerkraut has been in there since over a year and at this point could probably cure antibiotic resistant syphilis.

Peridot1 · 30/01/2023 09:03

Definitely an obvious name change @FatSealSmugSoup although quite an odd one really when you think about it!

I did try on a bright red pair of glasses in an effort to be more funky but I think you need a wardrobe of different colour glasses to match with clothes really to go down that route so I went with something more neutral. Maybe one day I’ll be brave!

I am a bit worried about @Alltheclouds too. She left and came back a couple of weeks ago but maybe it all got too much. Hopefully she will pop back and just stay here. I don’t think we are too lunatic-like! Or are we? Hmm

I am quite inspired about our garden now too. We have some lovely neighbours who have the most stunning garden and he loves advising people on their gardens and he came over last week and had a walk around ours and we went over to him yesterday and he had done a list of suggestions for plants and trees for our garden. Sadly they move tomorrow as their garden is now too much for him and he can’t bear the thoughts of not being able to look after it so they have bought something with a smaller garden. Theirs has featured on an Alan Titchmarsh programme a couple of years ago. Not the whole garden but a section of it and apparently Alan spent ages wandering around the garden with our neighbour talking about plants he has.

I need to clear out our fridge too. But probably not today. Today I’m finally ordering the curtains. And going to the cinema this afternoon with my neighbour.

hope everyone is ok. It’s fine a bit quiet around here.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 30/01/2023 12:55

Hi all- I have heard from @Alltheclouds . She is fine and all is well. She will be back online soon!
