Do you know anyone who has been on a game show?!

Just that really! I'm sat here watching Supermarket Sweep and realised that I don't know anyone who has been on a game show! Have you or someone been on one and if so, did you win anything!?

Somebody we know went on The Chase and won - a very nice amount (really decent holiday) but nobody had gone for the higher offer.

She said that Shaun Wallace was so lovely and very kind - exactly as I imagined he would be. You can always tell that the on-camera banter and trash-talking doesn't come at all naturally to him as it seems to do to certain other chasers!

I think my friend played Mark on The Chase. He said all the chasers were lovely off camera.

I do have another friend who went on Countdown. He got beat pretty badly. But I seem to remember it was by someone who made the series finals

Norma27 · 02/01/2023 13:56

I know the person who beat the chaser to win £80,000 alone. It was shown end of August.
He is a really lovely man so I am delighted for him.

Yes it was, in 1999, 1st £1m quiz show winner. I don't think she went on weakest link also, did he do that competition more than once? I may have completely forgotten that though if she did go on WL.

Ah, interesting! No, they never repeated the £1m competition on Virgin Radio. I'm certain it was her on WL - first name beginning with C and surname the same as a place in Hertfordshire.

I remember thinking that, had the general public known what she looked like and/or her full name (they never gave their surnames on WL), there would probably have been panto villain-style accusations of greed. As it happened, the plan was for the winner to be taken straight to This Morning/Richard & Judy or whatever the ITV breakfast show was back then for a big 'my dreams have all just come true!' feature - there was a posh car waiting in Golden Square to whisk the winner away - but it hugely overran (I suppose it was all new to them, too, so they didn't know how long it would all last) and the breakfast TV had long finished by the time it was all over!

It got down to a very lengthy stand-off between her and the man from NI who eventually lost to her, with nobody getting any of the 50/50-choice questions wrong. I vaguely recall that one of the pivotal questions was something like "Which of these famous writers was a woman: George Eliot or George Orwell?".

I've still got the whole thing recorded on some old cassette tapes somewhere - no idea where, though!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/01/2023 14:00

He's also really nice and very naughty. A LOT got cut out from our recording.

I can fully believe both of those - just as much as the 'rumour' of his tallness Grin

AnneElliott · 02/01/2023 14:02

A work colleague was also on University Challenge but I didn't know her back then. I'd love to go on a quiz show - might have to try and apply.

Oh, I'm sure they're all really nice in real life (although Mark did seem to get quite 'exercised' at losing in the early days); it's just that you can see right through Shaun, when he's 'performing' the expected posturing and giving it attitude!!

That said, I don't think I've ever even seen Darragh attempt the trash-talking at all - just genuinely 'I obviously want to win this, but I realise that you may well beat me'. I suppose the confrontational facade has mellowed somewhat as time has gone on.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 02/01/2023 14:16

One of my friends was on one with her DH in South Africa. They won a fair bit of money which they used to emigrate from South Africa to Europe.

Another friend was on one in Australia, she only got one question right (she knew the answer to most of the questions but wasn't very fast on the buzzer) and won 10 CDs.

....yes, it definitely was her - I just had a look online and found a geeky gameshow stats website that names her as both the winner of the Virgin £1m quiz and then of WL just under a year later. I was wrong about the amount, though: she 'only' won £1,500 on WL.

Lol, clearly my memory is rubbish, I was travelling at the time so obviously £1m is extremely memorable compared to £1500 😂 I'd be happy with £1500 at the moment TBH!! She still loves a quiz now!

Someone I was in halls with at uni went on Fun House in the early 90s when they were in primary school. I was quite jealous (still am deep down Grin)

NeedWineNow · 02/01/2023 14:45

The bloke who sits next to DH at football was on Pointless. Neither of us knew until we were watching it one day and DH recognised him. Can't remember who his partner was but he did get through to the final, although they didn't win the jackpot.

jay55 · 02/01/2023 15:13

A friend was on blockbusters.
Another was on the weakest link and we got to be in the audience for that one. Which was equally fun and boring.

piperatthegates · 02/01/2023 15:13

I worked with someone who was a series winner on Countdown and another friend was on a fairly short lived gameshow hosted by Richard Osman called Two Tribes, she didn't win but she did say RO was nice 🙂

wesayno · 02/01/2023 15:18

Someone I worked with was on Come Dine With Me.

Another on Tipping Point.

Family member on Countdown.

Someone from school a joke act on BGT.

good96 · 02/01/2023 15:22

I had a colleague who went on Deal or No Deal and won £100k - luckily her episodes were filmed during the summer (work in a school) so didn’t need to take time off as most did going on that show… and others.
They resigned and took a couple years off work.

PeskyYeti · 02/01/2023 15:27

My boss was on say yes to the dress with her daughter. Boss is a batch and came across as worst mother ever, it was wonderful to watch (for fans of the show, remember "I can see your pubic bone?!?)

Did it last.....

only as long as the show! He was 'nice' but totally not my type in looks or interests etc

HelpMeGetThrough · 02/01/2023 16:02

Has anyone said Bullseye yet?

Can you imagine winning on there, living in a landlocked area and winning the sodding speedboat!!!

Tarkan · 02/01/2023 16:07

I played Mark too but he was the only Chaser we met. Unless they've changed it since I was on. It was still in London when I filmed (Elstree now as two friends were there instead) so I got my lunch provided in the studio, then money given for my dinner afterwards and a free hotel for the night. I went partying in London with friends afterwards though. Even though you don't get the money straight away we were on the champers all night in a club on Shaftesbury Avenue. 🤣

There's also a bit of a story as to how I missed my flight home as well (planes and tube travel were also paid for by ITV). It cost me £300 to get another flight as I didn't know if I could contact ITV or not and BA wouldn't accept my explanation. 🙈

RhubarbFairy · 02/01/2023 16:07

Friends have been on Pointless. Friends DS has been on University Challenge (and was in the winning team).
I was Pilgram of the Day on Deal or No Deal. Got into the audience as a friend worked on the show. He was giving another friend and I a backstage tour before taping started (including the room the Banker sat in), and his radio crackled into life, one of the producers was asking him if I wanted to be the Pilgrim.

I used to watch DOND religiously on maternity leave and when my DC were tiny (DS1s newborn afternoon nap used to coincide beautifully), so I was chuffed to be part of it. Found Noel Edmunds to be lovely.

MrsMitford3 · 02/01/2023 16:13

Pauline Quirk's son went to my DC school.

She was on a Celeb Millionaire and our Headmaster was her phone a friend.
He did not know the answer when he was phoned.

There was a poster on here rather recently who was on The Chase and won-think it was an AMA and was very interesting!!

CornishGem1975 · 02/01/2023 16:20

Yes, I've known someone on Supermarket Sweep, Mastermind, The Weakest Link, Blockbusters and University Challenge!

GoT1904 · 02/01/2023 16:23

My cousin's loser of a dad went on deal or no deal. He wasn't allowed to tell people what he'd won till it aired so seemed to get a lot of attention, but it turned out he won a few hundred pounds 😂
