Just that really! I'm sat here watching Supermarket Sweep and realised that I don't know anyone who has been on a game show! Have you or someone been on one and if so, did you win anything!?

Me!! It was great fun!

cptartapp · 02/01/2023 13:07

My sister in law was on Cheggars Plays Pop back in the early 80's.

And why don't they give their husband to be really strict rules of what the dress should be like!!!

I've often wondered why they haven't sat down and talked about the wedding before the show starts. The honest answer, I guess, is that it wouldn't make good tv and the producers push them hard on the direction of bad choices and whacky weddings to make an exciting program.

You do sit down and discuss what you would like...with the producers. They then draw up a contract that states you cannot have certain things to create the drama, often including the dress style and venue. At that point the friends I knew who had applied declined to sign.

I also know someone who was on Bargain Hunt.

Smashingpumpkinsatchristmas · 02/01/2023 13:09

I’ve known a few who went on Jeremy Kyle as well.

Boooooot · 02/01/2023 13:10

My friend went on tipping point. Apparently Ben Shepherd was a knob.

I went to school with a girl whose parents went on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire back in the Chris Tarrant days, they didn’t live very far from us. Unfortunately they didn’t come away with a huge prize, I think they got £1k in the end - still a nice lump but probably a bit less than they’d hoped for.

MrsMoastyToasty · 02/01/2023 13:12

In the 70s a friends mum and grandad were on the Generation Game.
In the 80s I had friends in opposing teams on Cheggers Plays Pop.
More recently I've had an acquaintance appear in Come Dine Me: the Professionals and a former classmate appear on Pointless.

TreacsPotNoodle · 02/01/2023 13:12

One of my friends was on don't tell the bride (it's heavily staged and constructed by the producers) they divorced a year later.

Someone I went to school with went on deal or no deal and won around 20k

Whatmarbles · 02/01/2023 13:13

I went on £100k drop, didn't win.

4thtimeunlucky · 02/01/2023 13:14

I auditioned to do countdown once, I'm usually quite good at it watching at home. I was absolutely awful and my mind went completely blank. It was probably 10-15 years ago. The audition felt like doing a test at school.

My cousin won £1m on a quiz show Chris Evans did, this was over 20 years ago now.

Was that the one on Virgin Radio? I was on that too - got down to the final 17! We were put up in a hotel for the night; then when people were high on the celebratory mood and not wanting to go home the next day - some wanted to see a West End show and others wanted to continue 'refreshing' themselves - they extended the free hotel stay for another night! We also got the chance to go and see TFI Friday being filmed.

If it is that one, your cousin also went on The Weakest Link soon afterwards and she won that too - about £3K iirc.

Cocolapew · 02/01/2023 13:19

A work mate was on Come Dine With Me and The Chase.
She didn't win either but apparently Bradley Walsh is very nice and friendly.

Gatekeeper · 02/01/2023 13:21

I was on Blind date back in the '80's and got picked ;)

Did it last.....

AnneElliott · 02/01/2023 13:21

A friend was on the Weakest Link a number of years ago. Anne Robinson was apparently terrifying!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/01/2023 13:25

Somebody we know went on The Chase and won - a very nice amount (really decent holiday) but nobody had gone for the higher offer.

She said that Shaun Wallace was so lovely and very kind - exactly as I imagined he would be. You can always tell that the on-camera banter and trash-talking doesn't come at all naturally to him as it seems to do to certain other chasers!

APurpleSquirrel · 02/01/2023 13:34

An ex-friend went on Come Dine With Me & won.

Yes it was, in 1999, 1st £1m quiz show winner. I don't think she went on weakest link also, did he do that competition more than once? I may have completely forgotten that though if she did go on WL.

froomeonthebroom · 02/01/2023 13:34

Someone I went to uni with was on Big Break and a friend was on Deal or No Deal.

George from Married at First Sight lives locally and we often see him at our local rugby club. He is a friend of a friend but I've never spoken to him.

ImprobablePuffin · 02/01/2023 13:36

Not gameshows but you said reality too...?
Had a family member on grand designs and a friend was on a series of shipwrecked - the original version

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 02/01/2023 13:37

Loving the people reporting that Anne Robinson was scary and/or unpleasant - in other shock news, I'm just waiting for somebody to say they went on ROHOG or Pointless and telling us that Richard Osman is very tall Grin

I always wondered with Don't Tell The Bride, why they didn't speak at length and agree what they wanted before applying. They're only separated once they're accepted and the planning begins, but surely they know that they're getting married before that point?! The groom could still pretend that he's strongly considering the hideous dress or a live-animal-themed Nativity winter wedding that the bride will obviously hate and then 'suddenly come to his senses' at the last minute.

Then again, as PP have said, they probably have clever researchers who are able to weed out the ones who are well clued-up, in agreement and just want their wedding paid for. Painful though it is, the only reason we watch is to see him make decisions that she will hate!

One of the most explosive episodes of DTTB that I saw actually had two grooms - I don't know how they chose which one would do the organising. The other one was horrified and disgusted in equal measure and just would not let it go when he discovered that his fiance had chosen him an off-the-peg suit (I think it was somewhere quite decent, not Primark or Asda) when he was expecting something bespoke from Savile Row!

springerspanielpuppy · 02/01/2023 13:37

My neighbour won 20k but I can’t remember what show and she spent it on a world cruise with her husband.

My friend’s daughter won 27k on deal or no deal and used it for a deposit on a flat.

A client won come dine with me.

My friend won 16k on millionaire she is very knowledgeable but said it was down to nerves and the luck of the questions.

Twizbe · 02/01/2023 13:38

I was on Bargain Hunt when I was 17. Back in the David Dickinson days.

We won as well. Came home with £30

iklboo · 02/01/2023 13:40

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll - Ooh, ooh. Richard Osman IS very tall 😂.

He's also really nice and very naughty. A LOT got cut out from our recording.
