It makes me so sad to watch that . That man is so articulate and yet look at how his life has turned out.

Note : I don't mean Rishi.

My uncle was a rough sleeper for many years. He was an intelligent man, spoke a couple of languages and held been an officer in the forces but suffered from schizophrenia that led to alcoholism. MH problems may have been due to his abusive childhood.

Just why? Why couldn't he ask the man how he was surviving and what could be done to help him?

Good god. That clip is shocking. Asking a homeless man if he is 'in business' and then just throwing out 'what you up to this weekend' like it was some bloke he met up the pub. The guy was on the ball, and very polite and said he just hoped he could get some homeless accommodation. And this is at Christmas Shock
Honestly is Sunak this out of touch and thick? Just shocking.

Piggywaspushed · 24/12/2022 14:06

Just trying to imagine what leader would manage that well. Sturgeon, certainly. Rayner would. Not sure about Starmer. Definitely not Johnson or Truss.

DuncinToffee · 24/12/2022 14:22

Clav is trying to justify him on the 'where is Sunak' thread Xmas Grin

I think Starmer would be able to quite easily from what I've seen.

Sunak doing that fits in with the old footage of him saying he has no working class friends.

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/12/2022 17:36

See, I'm not shocked by this anymore, it's so far below any decent human beings ethical and moral standing to use unfortunate people and their situation as a photo op. It's outrageous that in this day and age, in this country, we have a need for food banks and soup kitchens.

This is the sort of behaviour that I've become used to seeing from richi sunak, all in a days work.

For the record, he appears to be both extremely out of touch, immoral, inept and pig shit thick. That the tories chose him to lead them says they are as bad, they have to be worse in some ways if they think he is the best of them.

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/12/2022 17:37

Forgot to add, in my opinion. Awaits deletion of the above...

I think Starmer would be fine.

Sunak is spectacularly out of touch, it is a well-known feature of his. There is a reason they keep him out of sight!

Notonthestairs · 24/12/2022 17:47

Whatever else I don't think Starmer would have settled on a conversation about financial services.
I think a long background in the CPS means that you end up talking to people with a multitude of backgrounds and - if you didn't have it before - you gain a bit of knowledge of life beyond the city.

carefulcalculator · 24/12/2022 17:57

I think the key thing is Starmer would have asked an open question - not one about something so specific. This is basic training - never assume anything about the person you are talking to.

Sunak has so much support and is this rubbish - that is pretty amazing really!

carefulcalculator · 24/12/2022 17:58

By 'support' I mean support staff/training.

I agree with this.

He's seen people at their worst situations needing help. He's great a human rights.

He'd have got it even if he couldn't empathise about the experience having never experienced it.

itsgettingweird · 25/12/2022 12:13

Merry Christmas all.

Hope you're having a wonderful day of eating, drinking and being happy. 🎄

pointythings is that your little kitty? Gorgeous!

This is good to hear...
simpleflying.com/uk-cant-find-airline-rwanda-deportation-scheme/

I think the government will have a serious problem finding an airline to run Rwanda deportations. They are all inter connected and the last airline has refused to try again as they own TUI and faced a huge backlash.

Let's hope

Belated Merry Christmas to everyone celebrating it. Smile Yesterday was a bit of a washout with everyone in various stages of a cold/flu so we’re going to try to spread a kind of low key Christmas Day out into today for those who are out of bed and back eating again because we’re all lucky to have the day off together.

I just watched the King’s Christmas message this morning (it’s up on the BBC iPlayer), I thought Charles did really well. He didn’t shy away from showing a glimpse of the shitty reality but he remained role-appropriate and hopeful and humanist in his religious role recognising that apeople are helping each other through these crises as best they can (rather than thanking god/s for the help ifyswim).

If this Tory government’s leadership took a break from demonising and underpaying public sector workers to feel ashamed by that inclusion and reflection of reality by the King yesterday, (..which tbh they probably won’t feel otherwise they’d have made different political choices,.) then, good.
