EXCL: Govt-appointed panel that approved Richard Sharp as BBC chair included Tory donor & wife of Boris Johnson’s ex-boss at Spectator

Missed this yesterday

Understand witnesses are now being contacted by Privileges Committee to begin submitting written and later oral evidence re partygate.

They are being asked not just for evidence of parties but the briefing Boris Johnson was given in response to ITV News and Mirror stories.

I feel for those staff asked to give evidence at the committee hearing. Everything will need to be declared in advance to Johnson and his lawyers.

I have been put in this position and although I had very clear recollections and contemporary notes it was very uncomfortable.

Pmqs today, Sunak is full of shit, doesn't care and has conveniently forgotten about Truss being PM.

Nothing new there then.

DuncinToffee · 25/01/2023 13:29

Oh dear, he does notlearn anything does he

NEW: No10 refuses multiple times to say whether Rishi Sunak has ever had to pay a tax penalty.

His Press Secretary says: “The tax affairs of any individual, whoever they are, are confidential.”

Haven't watched it yet but a quick scroll tells me it was mostly 'Before my time', ' nobody told me' and 'but Corbyn'

Sunak thought it was ok for his wife to avoid tax, he's happy to keep Zahawi in government despite avoiding tax. His office refusing to say that his own tax affairs gave always been correct speaks volumes.

That's maybe why the tories made him their leader. All in it together.

DuncinToffee · 25/01/2023 16:10

Ha, I was just watching this Newsagents video with Lewis Goodall explaining how everybody seems to know everybody.

Goodall is spot on - we are being governed by representatives from a tiny proportion of our population. Maybe that has always been the case but it does appear to me at least that this band are particularly interconnected.

the80sweregreat · 25/01/2023 18:03

Rishi sunak

' we had new information about Mr Zahawi's tax affairs '
In other words, it came to light he was trying to dodge paying a lot of tax.
Why don't they ever tell the truth ? It's just word salad

Notonthestairs · 25/01/2023 18:15

Zahawi was turned down for a NY honour. They've had sufficient information for some time - and enough detail for a red flag. They'd just assumed that Dan Neidle would be silenced and it would all settle down again.
That or they are really, really trusting which frankly seems unlikely.

Gullis, piece of shit Angry

twitter.com/peterkyle/status/1618225634052014084?t=46xvqvd3MPKwX-kCepKWjA&s=19

Tulip Sadiq asks the prime minister about the welfare of 200 unaccompanied migrant children who’ve gone missing.

Tory MP Jonathan Gullis heckles ‘well they shouldn’t have come here illegally’.

Just when you think you’ve heard it all, the Tory Party find a new low

Shock
BringBackCoffeeCreams · 25/01/2023 19:58

I think Zahawi needs to be done for tax evasion. Not avoidance. Not carelessness. Evasion.

He started a company from scratch with a mate. Built it up to a multi million pound company. Decided to sell it so split the shares 40% to his mate, the other 60% transferred to an overseas trust in his father's name, which then sold them. So he apparently walked away from this massive company he built from scratch with nothing, because his dad gave him the money to start it? Pull the other one. It was an attempt to evade tax that got found out.

Lonelycrab · 25/01/2023 20:01

Gullis, piece of shit

Strongest of words but absolutely justified.

He looks like a coked up football hooligan when in the HOC, braying whilst gurning.

And what he’s said there is sadly how so many people see things now. Illegals. Ffs.

Notonthestairs · 25/01/2023 20:05

That Gullis comment is the equivalent of saying those children were "asking for it". Despicable and unworthy of any member of Parliament.

the80sweregreat · 25/01/2023 20:46

Well, if anyone knows the 'loop holes' , it'll be someone who works for HMRC
Or in charge of it ( for a little while )

It’s a wonder he didn’t arrange for the law to be changed while he had the chance.

Raab

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/jan/25/dominic-raab-much-broader-inquiry-civil-servants-complaints

Dominic Raab is facing a much broader bullying investigation than originally anticipated with at least 24 civil servants involved in formal complaints against him, the Guardian understands.

Government insiders believe the depth of the inquiry and severity of some of the claims means the deputy prime minister will struggle to survive in post, and throws further doubt on Rishi Sunak’s judgment for having him in such a senior position.

100% agree with that sentiment. His comment was beyond disgusting. And about children? He’s sick in the head.

How, HOW are politicians STILL not being corrected when they refer to asylum seekers as “illegal immigrants” and “entering illegally”? Sure, well done them for stoking division and hatred. 🤨 But don’t they realise that the majority of the population thinks they’re either lying or too stupid to understand the law?

I‘m just frustrated that the speaker is too weak to correct them, and there’s no oversight or responsibility for their words.

Only 24 allegations. He must have worked with 100s of civil servants in his illustrious ministerial career. Surely if it is less than a 50% threshold it doesn't count?
