over 500 dead again and +1 plane.

Some people on Twitter are eagerly 'aiming' at 100,000 Russians KIA, which does seem slightly grim!

I think if Belarus do get involved it will be a gross mistake as I can’t see the Belarusian people being too pleased about it.

DH’s Belarusian colleague says there is no support there for fighting Ukraine and that we should see it as a country under occupation.

I hope it’s not just wishful thinking.

mobile.twitter.com/WarMonitor3/status/1599394022984134656 very sad news, Georgian unit surrounded and bombarded for 10 hours reports of heavy casualties

MissConductUS · 04/12/2022 16:27

Good point about the Patriot batteries as a possible source for the radar data, @notimagain. I had forgotten that two were deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division last March.

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar, we'll have to wait and see if the additional mobiks make much of a difference. Using the current group as disposable soldiers, the Russians have also lost a lot of equipment and small arms as they become casualties. I'm also doubtful that the Russians have the logistics to sustain a significantly larger force than the one they have now.

I don't see the Ukrainians as sitting idle over the winter. I think that when the ground freezes, they'll be on the move again. I don't know what to make of the possibility of Belarus entering the war. It would seem to be strongly not in their interests to do so. It's all risk and no reward. But I don't know how firmly the Russians control them.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 04/12/2022 16:47

@minsmum that is very sad news. Bakhmut has been and is brutal.

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2022 17:12

Re Kreminnia / Svatove what I'm seeing is a lot of Ukraine talking things up and Russia being negative but then saying theyve repelled.

What I've not seen so far is any degree of tangible movement despite the noise.

I am starting to doubt that we will see anything significant in the immediate future despite the rumours.

Will keep an eye.

Day 283, December 3rd. Summary of Arestovych and Feygin daily broadcast
Posted on 03 December 2022

πŸ”₯Battlefield overview

πŸ”₯Russia shelling Sumy, Kherson and Kharkiv regions
Russia continues to shell Sumy, Kherson & Kharkiv regions terrorising the civilians.
Artillery duels between Ukrainian and Russian forces continue in Kherson.

πŸ”₯Zaporizhzhja
Russian troops are frantically trying to reorganise & reinforce their defence positions in the occupied Tokmak and Melitopol, fearing the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the Melitopothe l direction.

πŸ”₯Bahmut
The main Russian army efforts are concentrated around the Donetsk region – a political objective to later sell the 100k KIA & sanction as β€œnecessary” to β€œdefend of so-called ”DPR”/β€œLPR”.
Russian troops are trying to gain a tactical advantage to surround Bahmut & prepare an attack on Slovjansk/Kramatorsk, concentrating its strongest troops, sending waves of infantry and sustaining heavy losses.
The situation in Bahmut is still complicated but, due to the Ukrainian General Staff taking some countermeasures, the Russian troops are unlikely to succeed.
Even if Ukraine retreats from Bahmut, which doesn’t give a military advantage to Russia, Russia has already spent enormous resources (human and material) attacking Bahmut for 3 months. It will take Russia even longer to reach Slovjansk/Kramatorsk just to be kicked out of these cities as it happened once before (in 2014).

πŸ”₯Svatove-Kreminna
Russian sources complain about Ukrainian artillery attacks and potential advance North of Kreminna.

πŸ”₯Weapons supply to Ukraine
The weapons supply to Ukraine by the Western allies is partially delayed due to technical problems (logistics, production delays, etc.) but also due to political hesitation from some Western leaders that cannot imagine a post-Putin world.

πŸ”₯Russian propaganda – new old fakes
Russian state media, RIA Novosti, published an β€œinterview” with a β€œRussian intelligence officer” that claimed that Ukraine sends β€œsuicide tanks with soldered hatches” to combat. This is a reused Russian propaganda fake that has been spread at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. The absurdity of Russian propaganda reached a level which is self-explanatory and does not require further comment.

πŸ”₯ZNPP – Russia trying to sell a new β€œgesture of goodwill”
The IAEA stated that the agreement on Russia leaving ZNPP may be reached soon. The future Russian retreat from Energodar is not a β€œgesture of goodwill” by Russia, but a Russian attempt to avoid being trapped and save their troops when Ukraine counterattacks in the Zaporizhzhja direction

πŸ”₯Russian mobilization
Currently, Russia has 200k troops deployed in Ukraine, of which 15% are mobilized (up to 50% in some areas) and the rest are regular troops and mercenaries (Wagner, etc.).
Russia is losing about 600 soldiers every day. Thus, the mobilization in Russia didn’t stop. Arestovych would like to remind Russians that if sent to Ukraine, the second wave of mobilized will soon join the first one and also perish in Ukraine.

πŸ”₯Shoigu visited Lukashenko in Belarus
Shoigu visited Belarus and met with Lukashenko. The visit is probably just to demand Belarus to continue training Russian mobilised troops but there are no signs of preparation for a second attack on the North of Ukraine from Belarus.

πŸ”₯Terrorist attacks on European embassies
The Ukrainian embassy in Madrid was the first to receive the explosive package and an embassy worker lost two fingers in the explosion. More packages with explosives and animal eyes were sent to high-profile targets & governmental buildings around Europe.
After several countries recognised Russia as a country sponsor of terrorism, Russia dropped all pretence & started sending explosives to embassies in Europe. Moreover, it seems that Russia declared war on PETA as well, as the packages with animal eyes are an act of cruelty and animal abuse.

πŸ”₯Price cap for Russian oil – cutting Putin’s money supply
The Western allies seemed to have agreed on a price cap – $60-per-barrel. This is higher than proposed by Ukraine and Poland ($30), but still limits the oil revenue of the Kremlin’s regime.
Russia claimed that it won’t sell oil to the countries that instituted the price cap, leaving Russia with the Chinese and Indian markets competing with cheap Iranian, Venezuelan & Gulf-states oil.
The price cap for Russian oil, the sanctions & reduction of European dependence on Russian gas are serious hits to Putin’s regime, limiting its financial options. Its effects should be visible by Feb 2023.

πŸ”₯Macron proposing security guarantees for Russia
As mentioned by Macron, the new security architecture in Europe should include security guarantees for Russia. As no one wants to invade Russia, the West can easily give a security guarantee to the Russian Federation in exchange for Russian nuclear disarmament after Russia is defeated.
Arestovych even suggests Russia signing β€œThe Budapest Memorandum II”.

πŸ”₯Putin β€œto visit Donbas” – photoshop update required
Peskov stated that Putin will visit Donbas at some point. This is a cheap attempt to mimic Zelensky’s visits to the frontline.
In reality, Putin is hardly brave enough to play catch with Ukrainian artillery & HIMARS or to meet with real people. Therefore, if Kremlin releases any footage of such a β€œvisit”, it’s recommended to look for the faces of his well-known, trusted FSO bodyguards and the photoshop/video editing mistakes that were spotted in all the previous Putin videos (e.g. meeting with β€œthe mothers of the mobilized soldiers”).

πŸ”₯Scandal with β€œDozdh” & the β€œRussian liberals”
One of the hosts of the Russian liberal TV channel Dozdh (that was banned in Russia and re-opened in Latvia) stated that Russian mobilized troops are living in terrible conditions and that Dozdh β€œable to help many soldiers with equipment”. After an outcry & Latvia launching an investigation, the channel claimed that the person misspoke & fired the journalist who made the statement, which is a suspiciously harsh punishment for something that they claim to be β€œa mistake”.
There are cases of anti-Putin activists, including but not limited to Mark Feygin, who are forbidden to appear on Dozdh TV. This might be one of the conditions on which the β€œliberal” Russian TV channel was given some grant money, potentially from the Kremlin sources, to re-open its media outlet in Latvia.
With few exceptions, many so-called β€œRussian liberals” have quite ambiguous opinions – ignoring Russian war crimes, refusing to support militant resistance to Putin’s regime and avoiding difficult conversations about the current state of Russia [fascism, imperialism, etc.].

Talk on Russian channels of a Ukrainian long range bombing of Engels airbase and two damaged long-range bombers, 2 Tu-95 bombers. Not sure how reliable the report is. That's 1200km from Kyiv! The word is that it's by drones but there's a lot of mystery at the moment.

Bakhmut has sounded horrible and extremely difficult for several weeks now. I only hope Ukraine can prevail there finally.

If it weren’t for the photo of the cemetery of missiles from Kharkiv, it wouldn’t β€˜t be possible to imagine there had been such a huge number shot there.

Following the explosions at the Russian airbase (which some Ru Milbloggers are calling for a nuclear response to - they don't like a taste of their own medicine, even when it's legitimate military targets!):

Total of 49 missles currently in the air over Ukraine.

Usually, Russia launches 2 barrages of equal size. This is the first.

3 separate groups of missles are heading to Kyiv Region.

The rounds they are now producing are 122 and 152mm artillery shells, so very short range.

The big question is exactly what hit those Ru airbases today, and will they have to react by moving more things out of range of whatever it was.

notimagain · 05/12/2022 21:42

@MissConductUS

The big question is exactly what hit those Ru airbases today, and will they have to react by moving more things out of range of whatever it was.

Most popular credible rumour doing the rounds ATM is a pair of repurposed/upgraded Tu-141's. Certainly has the range to do the job and FWIW a decent turn of speed.

The Ukrainians have used them before though it has to be said not with complete success; remember the mystery "drone" that hit Croatia early on in this war 😬 ?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tupolev_Tu-141

blueshoes · 05/12/2022 22:25

notimagain and missconductus, thanks for your insight.

Could it be a GLSDB? Might be too soon to be deployed.

Copied from the previous thread:

"[GLSDB] is also being considered for use in Ukraine with the HIMARS system. Ukraine has long wanted the ATACMS missiles for their long range. The GLSDB would be a compromise giving them a range of some 150 kilometres (94 miles) using a M26 rocket engine and a GBU-39. Both the SDB and the M26 are common in the US arsenal. It could be delivered by early 2023 using surplus bombs from the conflict in Afghanistan. Each would cost $40,000 USD."

MissConductUS · 05/12/2022 22:39

I think it's too soon for it to be GLSDB. They Pentagon just announced that it's in talks with Boeing to acquire them. I think that at least one airbase was more than 150km from the border.

Interesting, @notimagain. That fits with the reports I've seen. If true, it's unlikely that the Ukrainians have many of them in the locker.
