I’ve just had to make the hardest and saddest choice of my life. I’m feeling sad and I have absolutely no one to talk to, and could really do with some chit chat to take my mind off things. Does anyone want a chat about anything other than my hard decision?

My in-laws use sweetened whipped cream to "lighten" any cake or dessert 😄

From a can?

Yep, that would do equally well 🤣🤣

EpicChaos · 21/11/2022 23:17

Without a shadow of a doubt, Margaret Rutherford was the best Marple! I'd also posit that she was the best Madam Arcati!
As an aside, did you all know, that her dad beaned her grandad on the noodle with a po, until death did occur? True story!
Didn't Suchet have a bit of an argument with one of the producers of Poirot, over something to do with how Poirot would fold a hanky?

Chocolate fudge cake having been warmed in the micro for 30 seconds, is the way to go as far as cakes are concerned.

Anyhoo, I've no doubt that whatever the decision you made was about, you'll have given it your full and careful consideration so I'm sure things will find a way to sort themselves out for you.

Meanwhile, have some of my Ritter sport chocolate marzipan bar :-) ( Why have i only recently discovered these? )

NyanBinaryJohn · 21/11/2022 23:19

@billy1966
It just keeps the cake so incredibly <channels Miranda> moist. Got the recipe from an ex colleague's mother years and years ago, after said colleague brought that cake in on their birthday. Before that I could take or leave carrot cake, but this version did it for me.

@Gubu Yes, that is the correct link. I do the same with stars instead of lids, and serve them up with a dusting of icing sugar and some edible gold luster dust.

They never last long either Grin

ShovingtheChevette · 21/11/2022 23:20

Worried you liked to hear about our puppy? She's snoring next to me and making little snuffly noises.

justasking111 · 21/11/2022 23:20

My grandsons bought me the Grinch slippers form Primark a couple of years ago. I love the Grinch movie. Those slippers made me laugh every time I sat down and wriggled my feet.

Please can you hold my hand for a bit. I’ve just had to make an incredibly sad decision.

Yes please! Puppies are the best. What breed is she?

Nooooo! Joan Hickson.

And Victoria Sponge, with proper cream and apricot jam.
And yes to a whole tub of ice cream but NOT mint choc chip which is vile, like toothpaste. Which is weird because I bloody love mint chocolates, just not in ice cream form, and I bloody love ice cream, just not in mint choc chip flavour. Humans are bonkers aren't they? Well I am. Handhold OP. 🤝

Agreed! For me, it absolutely has to be Joan Hickson, though I do enjoy the Margaret Rutherford ones too. I’m afraid I didn’t enjoy anyone much after Joan Hickson, and it annoyed me when they shortened the programme name from Miss Marple to ‘Marple’. Ha, pedantic and ridiculous I know ;-)

Hi @Saddecision - I’m on the other side of the planet, so have to be awake with you. I did a VERY busy 17.75hr day yesterday and am now 1.5hrs into a 4hr shift that is so dead in the water, I am clock-watching to stay awake. (Allied health…Have not yet seen a patient. Absolutely can’t pick the days.)

From a can?

No, just pure cholesterol 😂double cream, big as you like spoon of icing sugar, whipped to soft peaks. I gain weight just thinking about MIL's dinners (and they are lush).

@Ellie56
The carrot cake thread is here:
www.mumsnet.com/talk/food_and_recipes/4682557-trusted-carrot-cake-recipe-please

@SiobhanSharpe
Yes, you can definitely chop/mince pineapple rings to get the same effect. A tin of 4 is about the right size.

@billy1966
I posted a carrot cake recipe on here accidentally!

For anyone trying the recipe, a word of warning. It's a runny batter so don't use a loose-bottomed tin :-)

Also, if you find you haven't got carrots, or tinned crushed pineapple, it works just as well with parsnips and chopped up tinned peaches (as my mum found out when she set out to make it only to find herself carrotless!)

Onthebrink87 · 21/11/2022 23:31

Someone said to me a couple of months ago that once you start clapping for the first time, you never stop. The pauses just vary greatly in length.

I'm genuinely embarrassed at how often I find myself thinking about that.

ShovingtheChevette · 21/11/2022 23:34

She's a black lab, 12 weeks old, with the best ears ever. She adores DH, mind you he is getting up with her at 6 every morning Grin She's going to be tall and slender I think (we know her mum) but for now she can still squeeze under the sofa to chew her toy in peace.

Please can you hold my hand for a bit. I’ve just had to make an incredibly sad decision.
SiobhanSharpe · 21/11/2022 23:35

Wow -- she's a beauty.

ShovingtheChevette · 21/11/2022 23:36

I hope she makes a horrible day a little bit better for you OP.

DuchessDandelion · 21/11/2022 23:37

Talking of puppies...

I found this link on another thread and it's definitely medicine for the soul, op!

Now. About cake.

Chocolate fudge cake warmed up til its melty and served with fresh double cream on the side is the way to go.
Apple pie at Christmas is a particular favourite too.

Margaret Rutherford is one of my favourite actresses and her Madame Acati is the best!

I barely understand a word of this, though:
her dad beaned her grandad on the noodle with a po, until death did occur? True story

poshme · 21/11/2022 23:38

Ooh I had one like that once.

nothing quite like a Labrador's ears...

I don't like Christmas cake, but I LOVE carrot cake. maybe I'd like carroty Christmas cake .

She's asleep with her head in a slipper right now. It'll be Tim e for a wee shortly, then up to bed, where she'll insist on a quick snuggle with DH before settling in her bed.

BookShark · 22/11/2022 00:01

I'll tell you my woes for this evening. Spent all of yesterday prepping some super-impressive brioche bake for DD's cake sale tomorrow. Baked it this morning. Carnage. DD's comment was "you can hand it in, but please don't put my name against it".

So have now spent this evening baking something entirely different - twice, because DD kindly volunteered me to make extra. And I have a mountain of brioche buns to dispose of somehow.

I don't think I'll be applying for Bake Off any time soon...

Oh, and to make things worse, DH is away with work. Both cats prefer him to me, despite the fact I'm the one at home to feed them during the day. So I'm being ignored by sulking cats, disowned by DD due to my baking incompetence... It's a good job I've got wine!

MammaWeasel · 22/11/2022 00:04

Can you make bread and butter pudding with the brioche?

Saddecision · 21/11/2022 21:43

I genuinely laughed at this. Thank you! I’m very not a horse fan 🤣

@Saddecision
I think someone thought you were the person who was contemplating having her old childhood pony euthanised..I must admit that crossed my mind too!

Hope you are ok, whatever your sad decision was.
