I’ve just had to make the hardest and saddest choice of my life. I’m feeling sad and I have absolutely no one to talk to, and could really do with some chit chat to take my mind off things. Does anyone want a chat about anything other than my hard decision?

I'll hold you Flowers
I like cake. Lemon cake is definitely seasonal. My favourite is chocolate fudge cake. I'd have that every day.
I've never seen task master. But I'll give it a go.
I've just discovered benidorm (the programme not the place) I enjoyed it until the last 2 seasons.
I wish season 5 stranger things would hurry the f up.
I'm in love with Ryan Reynolds. It's hard though cos I'm not a home wrecker.

I had a beloved great Uncle called Harry. He reminded me of Poirot - bachelor all his life, quite cryptic (I am still working out some of the stuff he used to say and he died 14 years ago!).

He was very precise and just being with him was a wonderful comfort. I really miss him.

TrashyPanda · 21/11/2022 22:40

Ooh, I adore cake.
nigella has a lovely recipe in her Xmas book, for a Bundt cake, using this amazing mould. It looked amazing and tasted great.

but today I had a couple of slices of a McVities Golden Syrup pudding cake. It was pretty good. They suggested serving it with custard, but I thought that might be a wee bit much for elevenses.

I always think of Paddington and elevenses. Used to be Paddington and Mr Gruber, now of course it is Paddington and the Queen.

MammaWeasel · 21/11/2022 22:42

I have never seen taskmaster. I'm on firmer ground with cake though......I like a really good coffee and walnut 😁

stonebrambleboy · 21/11/2022 22:43

Margaret Rutherford was the best Miss Marple.

I’m a fan of Geraldine McEwan although I can’t reconcile her Marple with the witch in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. What WAS in that egg she cracked?!

Can I just say, apropos of absolutely nothing, I have just rediscovered the joy of a buttered toasted teacake. I'm not usually a fan of dried fruit but you really can't beat a hot teacake and a cup of tea on a day like today.

I was at the supermarket checkout and as the cashier swiped a packet of Warburtons teacakes, she said "Oooh I could just eat a toasted teacake and cheese"
and the customer behind me said "So could I". I was like what? wait, what culinary wizardry is this? Turns out it's a known thing in Yorkshire, I have lived here a!l my life and had never heard of it. Rich fruit cake with a slab of Wensleydale is a given, but toasted cheese on a toasted teacake? Still haven't tried it, but I am tempted.

Believe it or not, absolutely nothing! By the time I’ve wrestled DD into bed I don’t have the attention span for series really! I am watching the odd episode of Taskmaster when I remember. What I actually love rhymes with Blue Fools Rag Face which I’m well aware is MN blacklisted!

Not over here it’s not! www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4645970-ru-pauls-drag-race-v2

Nooooo! Joan Hickson.

And Victoria Sponge, with proper cream and apricot jam.
And yes to a whole tub of ice cream but NOT mint choc chip which is vile, like toothpaste. Which is weird because I bloody love mint chocolates, just not in ice cream form, and I bloody love ice cream, just not in mint choc chip flavour. Humans are bonkers aren't they? Well I am. Handhold OP. 🤝

Bugger, that recipe should have been on the carrot cake thread, sorry!!

There's a carrot cake thread? I seriously need to investigate that!

MammaWeasel · 21/11/2022 22:49

I beg to differ! Margaret Rutherford was not the worst miss Marple, imho. Too big and too forthright though. Angela lansbury was the worst. I liked Joan hickson best followed by Julia mckenzie

bigdecisionstomake · 21/11/2022 22:49

@Shunkleisshiny toasted teacake and cheese....what sorcery is this!

*runs to kitchen to test it out immediately

Sad decisions are always difficult.

I had to take a difficult decision 4 years ago to out my daughter in chemo (she doesn't have cancer but it us used to treat other disorders). The treatment could kill her liver or worse her. It the benefits if it worked had the potential to be completely ife changing.

As hard as the choice was to make I would make it again in a heartbeat. It has changed our lives.

Whatever the decision is, you have made it for the right reasons.

In the meantime to cheer you up...I am renowned for being a klutz. Day 1 of a new job I tripped over my boss's chair and face planted the floor in front of about 90% of the senior management team. This week I have slammed the boot lid on my wrist and given myself a massive bruise...

Honestly I should cone with a health warning xx

That sounds like an incredibly hard decision. Glad it's been the right thing for your family. (Also sympathy on the klutz-ness!)

Margaret Rutherford was the best Miss Marple.

My favourite was when she said: "Well yes, quite so". So powerful yet understated. And then got back on with her knitting.

If she was my next door neighbour I'd call round everyday and we would knit/crochet together while discussing the day's business.

She is everything I yearn to be - calm, wise and measured. I am chaotic, daffy and have all the self control of a toddler.

Has anyone tried to make their own mince pies?

I did in 2020! They were surprisingly nice. Better than shop bought. But what a faff when you can buy them! My dad made some with filo years ago, they were great.

Minimalme · 21/11/2022 22:53

Oh yes, Joan Hickson was my fav - she was the "quite so" one.

poshme · 21/11/2022 22:55

I'm just here OP to say- buy Christmas pJs!

Yes. Totally unnecessary, but even if you only wear them from 1st Dec - 1st Jan (washing obvs, this is MN) then you'll get more wear from your other PJs.

Plus. When you have a bad day, at any time of year, you can put on your Christmas PJs, and they'll make you smile due to the totally ridiculousness of owning PJs for a time of the year. The sillier the better IMO.

Minimalme · 21/11/2022 22:55

Also, now I've got carried away with my Marple/Poirot fantasy life, I just wanted to say that we very rarely really have a decision to make. Usually there is a course of action and we have to take it.

Console yourself that you have take the course of action that your were presented with.

Saddecision · 21/11/2022 22:55

StinkerTroll · 21/11/2022 22:14

Best taskmaster task, Rhod Gilbert in Greg's wardrobe..... I nearly damaged myself on that one..... Rosalind is a fucking nightmare is a fairly close second 🤣

I am laughing at you damaging yourself

@Onceuponaheartache that sounds so so difficult. I hope your daughter is ok now 💐

Unfortunately it is the case that I’m having to take a course of action. It is one of those rare active decisions. A life changing one at that. It’s just sad all round, but the best thing to do.
