Elon Musk is a horrible human

He just makes me cringe. He buys twitter after changing his mind backwards and forwards, promptly sacks half the staff, and then tells the rest they have to be in the office for at least 40 hours a week, despite them having been told previously they could wfh forever if they want.
He's a psychopath, right?

No he is a business man
He has the right to tell employees that they work in the office
All buy outs are subject to posturing

ShippingNews · 10/11/2022 14:06

Telling his employees that they have to come to work in the office, hardly makes him a psychopath.

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/11/2022 14:08

I think it's a bit much to give him a diagnosis based on the half stories you've read in the press, etc. He has Asperger's I believe. Twitter have paid those losing their jobs several months salary which is likely to be much more than any statutory redundancy payout after a consultation period.

Maybe he can stop it from being the cesspit it is and get rid of the bot accounts. For all his money and apparent intelligence he agreed to buy it unconditionally without doing any due diligence then wanted to back out and couldn't.

I admire a lot of the work he has achieved with SpaceX and Tesla, but I wouldn't want to work for/with him, or socialise with him either for that matter.

His business practices are mostly in line with other ruthless tech billionaires (Jez Bezos etc) so one could argue the precedent has firmly been set.

PeekAtYou · 10/11/2022 14:10

I don't think he's a nice human but for different reasons than the ones you've stated.
I think he bought Twitter as he wanted to avoid a court battle then be forced to buy it.
Twitter was losing $4 million a day. Cutting costs is far from unreasonable. Are you angry about Facebook/Meta redundancies that are coming? (11,000 people)

Many people have seen WFH arrangements change since the height of the pandemic. Is WFH forever a verbal promise or in their contracts?

BitOutOfPractice · 10/11/2022 14:12

I’m wondering how the business suddenly has that office capacity, on just the right places, for everyone to suddenly come into the office.

MollieMarie · 10/11/2022 14:13

I don't understand why he wants to bring back the era of fake news by charging money for verified ticks and letting people spread misinformation under the guise of 'free speech'.

Such a great one that he has had to make U turns several times already.

  • first on buying Twitter in the first place - but he couldn’t back off
  • Now the whole blue tick debacle trying to make people pay etc….
he looks like he has no ducking clue as a business man tbh.
PeekAtYou · 10/11/2022 14:48

@BitOutOfPractice Half of the company are on gardening leave

megletthesecond · 10/11/2022 14:49

He's awful. Not a business man.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 10/11/2022 14:51

What a horrible thing to say. I don't particularly like him, but still I wouldn't say that. He has Asperger's, so the way he thinks might be different.

Temporary311022 · 10/11/2022 14:52

I think his support of the republican party and veering towards right wing/nazi beliefs makes him more of a psychopath. Either way - he overpaid for a tech company just before a tech bust.

Temporary311022 · 10/11/2022 14:53

Tesla is also crashing in Value! I’m sure some of the equity guarantees that were part of the buyout won’t come through and he will have to sell more tesla shares!!!

Pleasepleasepleaseno · 10/11/2022 15:01

Also he claimed that British diver that was helping rescue the Thai children that got trapped in that cave a 'peado' didn't he? What was all that about?

Such a psychopath that he was the only one helping Ukraine with his Starlink satellite off his own back and at a personal financial cost. Psychopath is a strong word to use for someone on the autism spectrum and not very helpful to others who have the same diagnosis and already suffer because they feel like they don't fit in.

Abhannmor · 10/11/2022 15:12

Twitter has never made money. But then neither does Tesla. It's all notional shareholder value. The trick is to get out before the music stops. He's no worse than other oligarchs I suppose.

Although falsely accusing someone of paedophilia is pretty extreme.

pastafairyan · 10/11/2022 15:14

They were useless jobs and slacking and doing nothing. If you don't think that's the case then go on Twitter and witness that it's exactly the same without those people.

IamlividandfumingIam · 10/11/2022 15:15

No worse than the rest of them is he.

Melonapplepear · 10/11/2022 15:15

He's terrible but you'll find loads of people fawning over everything he does. Such strange behaviour.

Pleasepleasepleaseno · 10/11/2022 15:16

I mean maybe they were useless. I just can't imagine taking over a company and sacking half the workforce IMMEDIATELY. Surely you'd take a while to see how things work, who does what, who's needed where? From an outside perspective it seems like he hasn't even registered these are actual people with lives.

Probably about a culture where every stupid throwaway comment is now recorded. Still, he should not have blurted that out, felt bad for the rescuer.

Melonapplepear · 10/11/2022 15:17

The fact that his older kids want nothing to do with him speaks volumes about his character, imo.

They were all sat there banning and calling us domestic terrorists for saying transwomen aren't women the other week.

Meta (facebook) has just laid off 11,000 staff. Social media is changing. A recession is coming. Musk had time to look at the books before he (had to) buy it; and has talked about its losses.

In answer to your first question I think he's a complex human (rather than horrid). But he's also an innovator. Wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same?

So you think he paid out $44billion without doing any research first ?. The business is haemorrhaging cash. He needs to do something about that. Ultimately, it’s a case of change of management, change of culture.
