Elon Musk is a horrible human

He just makes me cringe. He buys twitter after changing his mind backwards and forwards, promptly sacks half the staff, and then tells the rest they have to be in the office for at least 40 hours a week, despite them having been told previously they could wfh forever if they want.
He's a psychopath, right?

YABU OP. I know it's not AIBU but you are.

I quite admire Elon.

Tired2tired · 10/11/2022 15:30

He's a twat.

Most of the billionaires are scummy but he's had a weird cult like following of people thinking he's different because he smokes on podcasts and tweets some zany stuff, nope just like the rest.

He really shouldn't be on twitter in a tweeting capacity considering all the offensive, fake news, crypto shit etc he posts

cinnabongene · 10/11/2022 15:31

My friend worked with him on the SpaceX project in California. When she left she was given a new Tesla. I don’t think she thought he was a psychopath 🤷‍♀️

I like that he's unconventional. Probably one my younger, more adventurous self could have had a crush on.

IglesiasPiggl · 10/11/2022 15:34

I think he will rapidly discover that he is out of his depth with Twitter. Like most entrepreneurs, he is used to bending the rules to get where he wants to be, but you can't do that with such a public forum. I have also never got over how he behaved during the Thai cave rescue.

Pleasepleasepleaseno · 10/11/2022 15:16

I mean maybe they were useless. I just can't imagine taking over a company and sacking half the workforce IMMEDIATELY. Surely you'd take a while to see how things work, who does what, who's needed where? From an outside perspective it seems like he hasn't even registered these are actual people with lives.

What else do you do when a business is loosing money daily? You need to cut staff and fast. Id be surprised if anyone at Twitter didn't see a potential cut coming.

JacobReesMoggsSocialConscience · 10/11/2022 15:36

No longer being allowed to do something you were promised happens all the time. See also: Marisa Meyer at Yahoo: almost everyone was telecommuting at least part time but she'd had a baby at her work desk and was still in the office every day so you can too. I had this with a job where I'd asked for and was given, before I accpeted the offer, flexible hours as I was using public transit and it was unreliable. No problem for the manager who wanted to hire me, huge problem when he left and my new boss bowed to pressure from his colleague to "make" me come in at 8 exactly because she made her "people" do that and it wasn't faiiiiiiir if I didn't have to do the same even though I was in a different job. 🙄

Lesson learned: unless it's written into your contract, the prior authority's word means nothing.

PeekAtYou · 10/11/2022 15:36

He would have looked over the books before taking over so would have had some ideas about cost cutting. Meta (facebook) are making 11,000 people redundant. Maybe that industry is in trouble atm ?

Plus Musk is answerable to shareholders. They want profits not losses and $4m a day is a lot

BitOutOfPractice · 10/11/2022 15:39

PeekAtYou · 10/11/2022 14:48

@BitOutOfPractice Half of the company are on gardening leave

I know, but even so, there must be tens of thousands of people who've been WFH suddenly summoned to offices that have been, what, standing empty waiting for them for years?

miceonabranch · 10/11/2022 15:42

I think he's a bit of an idiot and he shouldn't have called that cave rescuer a paedophile. I can't get upset about Twitter employees because many of them appear to be misogynistic incels judging by how they treat the gender critical users.

I hope Twitter doesn't turn into a far right hell hole, but Musk will have to keep the advertisers on board so perhaps that will keep things under control.

AllHailtheSlushy · 10/11/2022 15:46

I agree but not for the reasons given.

He's bought twitter and allowed back people previously banned for prompting antisemitism and other hateful comments.

He could do so much good with the money that his family made off the back of the appropration of others. He could make a real change to the world. Feed the starving. Build libraries. Help women in Iran. He will never need or use a fraction of his wealth. But he spends his money buying twitter, building a spaceship and making his face look like it's made out of plastic.

That is why I think he is a twat.

I don't know about that. Jack Dorsey behaved terribly and simply ignored all the criticism on the same public forum. People were @'ing Jack all day long with examples of how he was promoting pedos and banning anyone who blinked at it, and he just left it to sit there because he knew the US courts regarded Twitter as a "conduit" and couldn't (wouldn't) touch him.

Quveas · 10/11/2022 15:52

the way he thinks might be different

That's definitely true. Whether he has Aspergers / ASD or not, I can't say. He says he has. But then he's proven to be a liar so many times that who knows. But he's definitely not a nice human being, and that isn't an ASD trait. Pretty sure that's all him.

Cam22 · 10/11/2022 15:53

@OP

So true. In every way.

It is known that tech companies are bloated and have hired way too many people. Most of the flagship tech companies are laying off thousands of workers, not just Twitter.

They made good money and will get a nice severance package.

Foolsandtheirmoney · 10/11/2022 15:59

This sums up how I feel about him. He could do so much good in the world instead he appears to be a self obsessed man intent on spending his wealth on vanity projects.

Someone said something like he was the only one to help ukraine by giving them starlink. I gave more to ukraine in proportion to the amount of money I have than he has and I bet a whole lot of other people have too.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/11/2022 15:59

It's just how it goes. It's not unusual. And 😁🤣 at the horror of having to be in the office for 40 hours a week.

PeekAtYou · 10/11/2022 15:37

Maybe he should have thought about that before buying a company that makes so much loss a day?Or has it only started since he took over?

Wallaw · 10/11/2022 16:01

Well, he certainly has some interesting times ahead

TheWurst · 10/11/2022 16:02

I find any admiration of him incredibly odd. He also seems to have some die hard fans out there which I really do not understand. He definitely has some sort of megalomania going on and this is all one big game to him. It doesn’t matter to him who gets hurt along the way.

The way he treats staff, has public spats on Twitter, calling that man a paedophile for criticising him. He often makes large grandiose gestures that he doesn’t follow through with. He also gives the least to charity of any of the big billionaires, even less than bloody Bezos. The man does nothing but massage his own ego.

mathanxiety · 10/11/2022 16:03

Be angry about late stage capitalism.

He's just a cog in the machine that's crushing us all.

Pleasepleasepleaseno · 10/11/2022 16:04

@FourTeaFallOut the 40 hours in the office thing is fair enough EXCEPT they were apparently told they could wfh forever if they wanted.
And yes to the PPs saying he could do so much good with his money.
I was chatting to friends the other day about that bloody enormous lottery win in the US last week and we all agreed we wouldn't want THAT much money. Its just too much responsibility. Surely most people would feel.compelled to do good with it and then you have to choose which good to do. It'd be stressful 😆
I mean don't get me wrong I'd love a lottery win. But 5 million would be the top I'd want to win I think (personally)

Also, a very interesting thread from a journalist who spent a long time reporting on him.
