Gavin Williamson will pick up £16,876 in severance pay for lasting exactly TWO weeks in government (plus £2,589 in gross pay).

As it's the third time he's been sacked/ forced to quit govt, presumably he's done quite nicely out of taxpayer.

Might be nice if he gave his redundancy money to charity , but I bet he won't

InMySpareTime · 08/11/2022 21:24

Why do they get severance pay for resigning?
Hopefully this slew of cabinet reshuffles will prompt a tightening of the pay rules for ex-cabinet members. Even a minimum service or probation clause would do it. The severance pay should never be more than you were ever paid for the role.

Notonthestairs · 08/11/2022 21:24

Sunak has responded to Williamson's resignation letter without actually referencing why he resigned. Bit of a kick in the teeth for those who have put in complaints - Sunak does remember that he's leading the whole party doesn't he?!

These serial benefit claimants are really quite a drain on the taxpayer aren't they.
We should start a campaign.

Grin
Roussette · 08/11/2022 21:28

Why does Sunak talk as if he's been YEARS in the job instead of 2 weeks doing sod all except creating division

itsgettingweird · 08/11/2022 21:29

Jgw you've actually excelled yourself with that comment Grin

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2022 21:47

JGW, yes, we should start a petition ..

Yeah I'd rather it was Braverman. She's not minister of fuck all. She's got the potential to do real harm to the country. Not just psychopathic to fellow Tory MPs.

Sunak needs Braverman & ERG/CSG votes for the Budget/Finance bill vote.
Will be interesting to see what stories come out after November 17th though. It's pretty obvious he'd rather have Jenrick as Home Secretary.

ClaudineClare · 08/11/2022 22:34

Oh jgw, please start an aibu thread about these serial benefit claimants. It could be very funny.

Doesn’t even understand the correct use of the apostrophe.

Roussette · 08/11/2022 23:29

So...older voters are enabled. They can use bus passes.

Yet young voters can't use railcards or student cards. Why?

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/11/2022 23:49

It's not just young people. There will be many families on the poorer side of society who don't drive and for whom foreign travel is a luxury.
They are choosing between eating and heating already, reliant on food banks and who simply don't have £100+ for a passport.

These people will have their voices silenced which is unforgivable. We should be able to access the free, council provided id now in readiness for any elections- especially with the time it's taking for the government to issue passports and driving licences.

That's without the m9ral objections to this.

AutumnCrow · 09/11/2022 00:01

How will postal votes work?

InMySpareTime · 09/11/2022 07:21

You should be able to just bring your polling card as proof of your address.
I mean, they're hand delivered to each house. The only way you could have it is because you got it from the house.
If they're that bothered about people voting for other householders they could just use the "inked finger" method that other countries do.

Notonthestairs · 09/11/2022 07:31

This has nothing to do with voter fraud and everything to do with disenfranchising younger/poorer voters.

This means that six of the Government-accepted IDs are specifically targeted at older people, while almost none are aimed at younger people.

I noted that reading the list before they'd even said anything.

This current lot aren't even slightly subtle.

Why can't you just need your polling card and proof of address?

itsgettingweird · 09/11/2022 07:47

Dear Suella Braverman,

I am writing to you with severe concerns about the voter ID requirement since the bill passed in April.

Currently it’s been published that the only universal forms of accepted ID will be drivers licence or passport.

The other forms of ID are only applicable to those over 60 such as bus pass and disabled travel pass.

As your party are very aware there is a general cost of living crisis currently.

It would be expected and usual for those on low incomes and poverty not to own a drivers licence or passport because they aren’t in a financial position to be able to own a car or take a foreign trip.

Could you please explain why you are providing the voting opportunity solely to those who can afford the luxury of cars and holidays or are over 60.

Why is this coinciding with your voter demographic?

And most importantly what are you going to do as a party to ensure EVERYONE who is entitled to vote will have a suitable - readily available and free ID ready for the local elections next May?

I've emailed the above to my waste of space MP. I'll get a load of twaddle back if I even get a reply at all!

Surely there’s got to be a legal challenge over this - it can’t be allowed.

countrygirl99 · 09/11/2022 08:09

I've put a question on my MPs Facebook page with a link to that article.

L1ttledrummergirl · 09/11/2022 08:20

@itsgettingweird and @countrygirl99 I like both of those approaches (thank you for the letter which i intend to pinch) and will do both here. I also intend to write to our local newspaper. I'm surprised the other parties aren't all over this.

My MP (surprise surprise) voted for this so needs to be accountable for that decision.
