The thing is, Gavin Williamson looks like a wet blanket, so these revelations are a mystery.

L1ttledrummergirl · 07/11/2022 21:49

If they want ID they need to provide national ID cards for free so everyone can apply and vote as is their right.

I agree with this, but, on a basic level I object to having to prove who I am to anyone unless I choose to, eg passport, accessing a bank account. I get hacked off whenever I've had to prove I'm a British citizen when an employer has asked, particularly when I had to pay and apply for the relevant documents.

Voting is a fundamental, basic right for every British citizen, having to jump through hoops to do this is wrong, particularly when the level of electoral fraud is so low so I would hope sanity prevails over this if they do try to change it.

Agreed

At the last GE there were six cases of which only one was proved to be voter fraud. Out of 47M eligible to vote

It's a way for the Tories to suppress votes

tobee · 07/11/2022 23:20

I don't think Braverman will go.
I don't think Williamson will go.
I think this is the new Sunak era:-

"we don't have loads of changes and are stable" = outside world appearance

"These people gifted me the leadership" = thinly disguised truth.

Notonthestairs · 07/11/2022 23:20

I put this on the previous thread.

Johnson has drawn up his honours list.

"EXC: Boris Johnson's resignation honours list has been finalised

The final list includes Nadine Dorries, three other MPs, the donor who arranged Johnson’s holiday to Mustique, and two former No 10 aides set to become the youngest life peers ever"

twitter.com/lara_spirit/status/1589743327678984192?s=46&t=aPG46p9oQmBsOSDYYsIalQ

"Holac will vet these names. Should they be approved, it is unclear if the four sitting MPs would trigger by-elections or seek to defer their peerages until the next election

Deferral is without constitutional precedent and risks a showdown with the King"

twitter.com/lara_spirit/status/1589743335883046913?s=46&t=aPG46p9oQmBsOSDYYsIalQ

Dacre is on the list despite having been turned down by the vetting committee previously. As is David Ross Tory donor 🙄

Notonthestairs · 07/11/2022 23:21

I'd be amazed if Dorries gets an honour after her blatant lying about Channel 4.

Pmk and thanks for the new threadBrew

Thank you for new tread. I am two chapters into The Decade In Tory. Quite a read.

Seems like Wendy Morton doesn't trust the internal processes. Not really surprising after Johnson decided to ignore the report in to Patel's bullying AND Sunak is busy saying he retains trust in Williamson. She clearly doesn't want this kicking in to the long grass.

Exclusive:

Wendy Morton, former chief whip, is escalating her complaint against Gavin Williamson amid concerns about ‘whitewash’ by Conservative Party

She’s referring it to Independent Complaints & Grievance Scheme, which investigates most serious cases

My MP is complaining that a series of rude posters about him have gone up around town, and why can't people just talk to him. Strange my and many others experience of writing to him is that our letters get no reply. I wrote to him about the Owen Paterson affair asking why the same standards of behaviour were not expected of Paterson as would be expected in my work place. The same question applies here.

Notonthestairs · 08/11/2022 10:55

Standards are where it all falls apart.

There are Codes (seemingly non binding & not enforceable) and Good Chap expectations but without the bite of an employment contract & legislation.

Our representatives are at the whim & discretion of their own party leader more often than not.

When the leader has his/her own shady dealings or a simple desire to hold on to power behaviour that would never be tolerated elsewhere will be shoved under the carpet.

No wonder they don't want to appoint an ethics adviser.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 08/11/2022 10:57

It's an absolute travesty that a PM who left in disgrace gets to dish out honours. He has no honour to share.

Absolutely this.

The Govt has lost its battle to keep secret a DHSC 'Covid lessons learned' review.
The department now has 35 days to make it public.

twitter.com/paulwaugh/status/1589970090539503618?s=46&t=viFLp0un7R24cozSLnHj6A

Why would they want to keep it secret?
How much do you think will be redacted?

Notonthestairs · 08/11/2022 13:57

🔺 Update: Sir Gavin Williamson has not denied telling a senior civil servant to “slit your throat” and “jump out of a window” but suggested the comments did not amount to bullying

twitter.com/thetimes/status/1589979456739082240?s=46&t=viFLp0un7R24cozSLnHj6A

What a putrid little man.

DuncinToffee · 08/11/2022 14:35

More on the honours list

After @lara_spirit scoop tonight being told four Tory MPs nominated honours have agreed to defer peerages until end of Parliament to avoid by-elections

But this presents constitutional issues - it’s unprecedented for someone to be an MP with deferred promise to be a peer

twitter.com/Steven_Swinford/status/1589750490107367425?t=d4bsCcBx5sZZ_Rlrq-rztA&s=19

They are running scared of elections, confidence in their own government must be all time high.........

If someone told me to do these things that Gavin Williamson said I'd be mortified :(
It is bullying and out of order

So what does amount to bullying then? We know from the Prtti Patel investigation that throwing files in a subordinate's face doesn't. So what does?

DuncinToffee · 08/11/2022 14:56

Downing Street says Rishi Sunak still has “full confidence” in Gavin Williamson.

Spox says that means PM does believe the minister’s denial of bullying allegations (though my understanding is he’s not denying using the words).

It's a carbon copy of Johnson isn't it? Pincher was a known sex offender placed into a position of authority over junior MPs.

Williamson is a known bully appointed minister of government without portfolio, a position of authority over MPs.

My question is why were conservatives unhappy enough with the former to remove Johnson from his leadership position, buy happy to leave Sunak in place? If anything it's worse under Sunak because not only did he have Johnsons example fresh in his mind but he still replicated it.

The MPs should be sending letters in droves, their double standards know no bounds. Braverman should have been enough, it's beyond ridiculous now.

That makes my head hurt and I can't quite put in to words why. How can anybody have 'full confidence' in someone who has been sacked twice for failure? If he does indeed have full confidence doesn't that mean his judgment is poor? Because someone with good judgment would keep a very close eye on a subordinate who had a history of failure and wouldn't risk stating 'full confidence' just in case.

And then there's schrodingar's bullying, not denying the bullying but not accepting it amounted to bullying. And Sunak believes that crock of shit.

My brain is dying.

L1ttledrummergirl · 08/11/2022 15:55

Fledermaus I totally agree. I don't understand how people that stupid are in those jobs. Sunaks judgement is clearly fucked and if he thinks it's OK to treat people like that, how is he going to behave towards people himself?

I need a few synonyms for disgusting and disgraceful because I'm sick of those words. They really shouldn't go with British government but lately they match up far to well.

Fladdermus · 08/11/2022 15:56

Who gets to decide if someone is being bullied, the bully or the bullied?

Who gets to decide if someone is being bullied, the bully or the bullied?

In this case Sunak doesn't get to decide (I think) Wendy Morton has put her claims to the Independent Complaints & Grievance Scheme which will appoint an independent examiner.
