DH says the Americans already tried detonating a nuke in space. What they learnt from that is don't do it. They won't be able to take out Elon Musk's satellites, they will only be able to take out ALL satellites, including their own. Plus all TV, phone and radio networks and anything else using an aerial.

notimagain · 25/10/2022 13:02

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

I don't believe for a solitary instant that either the USA or the UK would provide them with the material to make one, which was the original story from Russia.

It doesn't make sense but FWIW I'm not sure what the USA/UK would need to provide..A dirty bomb is in theory at least a fairly simple device and the radioactive element could be provided from industrial, powerplant or medical waste.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/10/2022 13:06

Which does make one wonder why they needed to involve the USA and UK in their story in the first place!

To try and sew division.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/10/2022 13:40

I guess; that or for the benefit of the uninformed masses in Russia and its satellites.

To try and sew division.

Exactly...

One of the spooks/national security types worries for many years has been that a terrorist group might develop the capability to build and deploy a "dirty bomb"...in theory at least you don't need nation state level of resources to construct a simple one...

I think the Russians like getting trigger words such as "nuclear" or "radioactive" into the Press because they know regardless of the context they ring massive bells for a lot of people....

Thanks, @Usou. It's good to know what people find useful and interesting.

@notimagain , I don't know if you've seen this, but one of the recent Russian aircraft crashes was due to the ground crew giving the pilot a tank of nitrogen, not oxygen.

Plane crash in Irkutsk: pilots fainted due to nitrogen in oxygen tanks

How's that for a third-world level of aviation competence?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/10/2022 14:48

How often do seagulls get into jet engines?

Brilliant! Now to start training your ducks to fly.

Nail biting whether Ben Wallace gets to stay on in Rishi's cabinet as Defence Secretary. Please Sunak do the right thing.

Oooh any thoughts on what?

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2022 16:30

Positive noises about Svatove all day but not a breakthrough yet as far as I'm aware.

Also positive noises about Kherson but not to the degree I'd expect if it there was bug news there.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2022 16:31

Ben Wallace stays put.

Huge relief

Yes and I’m pleased because Rishi really had to swallow his pride for that. Also assume the spending commitment for defence has been assured as that was Wallace’s red line.

Worrying to see 30 democratic law makers have now sent a letter to Biden asking him to find a diplomatic way to end the war through direct negotiation with Russia As much as we don't want this I do worry this become more common through the winter as other countries struggle with the energy crisis through the winter.

This bothered me too. It's 30 out of 224 democrats in the House, so not a huge percentage, and it's already getting a lot of pushback from other progressives.

House progressives join the crazy #MAGA cult on Ukraine

The proposal is so unrealistic that I have to conclude it's down to political posturing before the midterm elections. The US cannot negotiate with Russia as we are not at war with Russia.

Hurray! Good man Sunak. Restores my faith in UK politics (just a little).

The expert they interviewed should stay away from windows. The first thing he said was that Ru miscalculated its strength in the SMO and has been losing for the last eight months. That didn't delight the hosts.

They have now done a whole load of backpedalling, apparently a "Staffer released the statement without their approval":
