Tony Blair on 'compassionate conservatives'

twitter.com/AdamBienkov/status/1588800882996486144?t=fH2zGhVdXlGFeogjjeVDQg&s=19
Fully expect Starmer to quote this at next week's PMQs

That is a corker.

"Is he going to pull the my wife is not a politician card again?"

I don't think that argument is tenable if they as a family are financially benefiting from Russian money/clients.

I'm quite sure they could have structured dividends to exclude any profit linked to work carried out in Russia.

However Infosys is an Indian company and India's response to the invasion is markedly different from UKs.

"Despite U.S.-led efforts to isolate Russia’s economy and hasten the war’s end, India has chosen to increase imports of Russian oil ten-fold, while increasing that of fertilizer eight-fold. Together with China, Indian purchases of Russian goods have largely negated the effect of transatlantic energy sanctions, and India further funds Russia’s war machine by purchasing big-ticket items, such as submarines, tanks, fighter aircraft and surface-to-air missile systems — a full half of the country’s arms imports come from Russia. Blair is completely right about that!

What does the Sunak govt want?

One MP defines it as George Osborne + Suella Braverman (fiscal consolidation + hardline on immigration)

CCHQ is building a library and seeking donations of right-wing books to help them come up with ideas…

Braverman latest

— the Home Office is worried internally that a judicial review means they’ll have to release legal advice

— there are concerns among Sunak’s team that Braverman will be shown to have misled parliament and be forced to resign

twitter.com/alexwickham/status/1588823540618477568?s=46&t=TaAMIA1siQKCTZZ_xSAbyA

Not sure why they are worried that Braverman would have to resign.
The last politician to mislead Parliament cling on for months....

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2022 11:25

Clung not cling!

Let's be realistic here...we all know why the Chinook.

It was to play to her racist fan base. The optics of going to war against the invaders in a army helicopter. I'm only surprised there wasn't a machine gun mounted.
She would've wet herself if she spotted a dinghy
It's all the optics, it always is with this shitshow

I was thinking she wanted to piss on them from a great height which fits quite nicely with her wetting herself if she saw a dinghy. No misogyny there, men are even better equipped for pissing on people from a great height.

Especially I imagine off the rear ramp of a chinnook. Now we know why it had to be a chinnook and not any other helicopter.

You never know when a shewee might come in useful.

I wish I hadn't started thinking about this. I think I need to watch a good film and distract myself.

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2022 14:09

One Tory insider said Sunak and Braverman spoke half a dozen times on October 23, the day she endorsed him.

One Home Office insider: “A deal done was obviously done: ‘back me and I’ll install you back as Home Secretary”.

Sunak’s allies deny any deals.

Few senior folks in Whitehall or the Tory party believe Braverman will last:

One official who has worked with Braverman called her “the human hand grenade”

George Osborne reckons Number 10 had “probably made a calculation” that Braverman would “blow up”

twitter.com/sebastianepayne/status/1588895249396817920?s=46&t=TaAMIA1siQKCTZZ_xSAbyA

I thought Truss was the human grenade? How many do they have and why are they elevated to the most important positions in state?

Is he going to pull the my wife is not a politician card again?

If that's right, our Prime Minister is profiting from a business that is operating in Russia. A country that has been accused of meddling in our election system, that has caused a war in Europe and which has caused fuel prices to rise in Britain- meaning more hardship for the general population.

Do we have Schrodingers prime minister? Simultaneously supporting Ukraine in the war against Russia while profiting from business done in Russia and benefitting Russia.

I guess the hardship of the population he is supposed to govern is less important that his family benefitting from dirty money.

Fucker.

Gavin Williamson showing himself up. Worth a minute to read the 🧵

EXCLUSIVE: Gavin Williamson sent abusive and threatening messages to Wendy Morton about not being invited to the Queen's funeral, warning her: "There is a price for everything"

Sunak told of complaint about him but appointed him anyway, ex-chairman says

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2022 18:47

I've never understood why Williamson was brought back after being accused of leaking confidential information. Shady dealings and yet Sunak saw fit to bring him back.

Blossomtoes · 05/11/2022 19:14

It’s Williamson who knows where all the bodies are buried, isn’t it? He’s rumoured to have a little book of misdemeanours.

Notonthestairs · 05/11/2022 19:26

What I find baffling is Williamson clearly has a Trump sized ego. What has he achieved to feel that he is that important? Like the Royal family would give a tiny shit whether he was at the funeral or not.

Blossomtoes · 05/11/2022 19:30

Or anyone else, come to that. How incredibly tasteless to kick off over the Queen’s funeral.

ClaudineClare · 05/11/2022 19:44

Angela Rayner was quite right to call the Tory government* scum. Lower than vermin, as Bevan said. I despise them with all my heart.

Williamson and others do seem to be trying especially hard to prove her right.

I don't think narcissistic behaviour is restricted by any kind of reality.

Another in my random National Trust election themed posts -

40,000 rightwing fanatics just tried to take over an organisation of 5,000,000+ members and push it to the hard right.

Only 70,000 people stopped them.

The other 4,900,000+ don't know how lucky they are.

A follow up tweet from Pogrund

Biggest danger for No10 arguably not Williamson’s conduct — but Jake Berry’s on-the-record statement saying he told Sunak about the complaint

PM appointed Williamson 24hrs later regardless. Same day he said his govt would be run with accountability + integrity from top to bottom

smells a lot like the Pincher appointment

OP posts:
ClaudineClare · 05/11/2022 22:19

No10 says the PM doesn’t remember specifics of the conversation

This is a Johnsonian level of fibbing. Did I imagine this, but hasn't Sunak been described as a "details" man? But not enough to remember important conversations it seems.

peridito · 06/11/2022 08:46

How is it possible to access Williamson's What'sApp messages like this ? Did Wendy Moreton release the exchange ?
(being very dense here ,apologies)

Thank you so much for your warnings on this upthread - I voted just in time and will be on my guard for next year. Glad to have been one of the 70k

DuncinToffee · 06/11/2022 08:58

Yes Wendy Morton shared their WhatsApp exchange.

Oliver Dowden is defending Williamson this morning,
