'Apparently they wanted to use the chinook for an alternative view of the channel to spot boats, problem was the weather stopped boats crossing (which was predicted) No need for a chinook and they could have shared a car.'

Ah they could have viewed the Channel from a car. Silly them. Perhaps you could contact the Clandestine Channel Threat Commander and offer your consultancy ?

What do you think Braverman has done well?

I said she is doing surprisingly well. She's only been in post 2 weeks bit early to be listing achievements. By doing well I mean she can certainly hold her own in the HOC also with tht activist 'journalists', very assertive and confident. Puts the ridiculous opposition front bench back in their boxes.

She also seems very proactive and wants to end the awful dangerous smuggling of vulnerable people in small inflatables. I'm really surprised some on here aren't as horrified as I am by this trafficking. It isn't safe and needs to stop.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2022 09:07

This is her second stint as Home Secretary, so more than 2 weeks.

In short, you like what she says.

Everyone wants the trafficking to stop, but this is not a new problem. The government has done zilch so far. Too busy partying, infighting, having leadership contests. Oh, and wasting millions on the revolting Rwanda scheme, Braverman's wet dream.

In the meantime the people that are crossing need to be treated fairly and compassionately and not treated as "invaders".

At least so far most of them have made it safely to our shores, which is something to be thankful for.🙏

itsgettingweird · 04/11/2022 09:49

I'm horrified by the trafficking.

You'd have to be made of stone not to be.

However the traffickers give not one once of a shit if those who get on the boats die.

Not one care. None.

So by punishing those people you aren't preventing the trafficking.

I agree about the fact we need a processing centre in Calais or somewhere around there to stop people needing to use the small boats. If people could do the journey without risking their lives I'm sure they would.

I don't believe any parent who gets on that boat with their child believes there is another option for them. Who risks their child's (or their own?) life for kicks?

Do you not think there may have been a reason, let's face it chinooks aren't lauded for their luxury and comfort. If she was being a silly extravagant woman, as seems to be the accusation here, then surely she'd have booked herself a ferrari or similar no?

A cursory Google will inform you that she was accompanied by Channel Clandestine Threat Commander Daniel O’Mahoney and they were observing operational ares.

Ferrari would have been a heck of a lot cheaper.

Rhondaa · 04/11/2022 10:17

'Ferrari would have been a heck of a lot cheaper.'

Not sure if it would have given much of a view of the channel and the operational areas although the op does agree with you that a car would have sufficed Grin.

itsgettingweird · 04/11/2022 10:27

It would have done in yesterdays weather.

Not much you could see let alone any boats being able to cross to actually watch!

Why did she need to see the Channel?

mibbelucieachwell · 04/11/2022 11:58

She needed to see the channel to tell Dominic Raab about. There's a tunnel underneath it that connects England to France! People can safely use it to travel between the two. Even asylum seekers. Well, they could if they were allowed to apply for asylum in Uk at Calais. What a lot of money would be saved if they didn't have to be accommodated for months, even years on end before they were sent home on the grounds of being illegal. 🤔

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/11/2022 11:59

Makes you wonder why in the second world war when Germany was trying to invade, the home office ministers didn't get into planes to view the channel. They seem to have managed with maps, so maybe they were more intelligent and competent then?
Or maybe this home secretary is a disgrace who sees nothing wrong with spending our taxpayer money on fripperies?

ClaudineClare · 04/11/2022 12:01

Maybe she wanted to hurl abuse at the "invaders" from a height.

Blossomtoes · 04/11/2022 12:09

Maybe she just wanted a photo opp. Shame it backfired so spectacularly. Any halfway decent comms person would have told her that though.

Downnotdown · 04/11/2022 12:27

So Graham Brady is claiming that Boris did have enough votes at the last leadership campaign, but just decided not to stand.

Yeah, right, of course he did...

I actually think he did. And it was firmly pointed out to him that the party couldn’t afford any more shambolic psychodrama and would probably end up in a vote of no confidence in the government with half its MPs voting with the opposition.

Notonthestairs · 04/11/2022 12:49

I also think he managed a 100 MPs but was firmly advised that closer to 200 had rejected him and he wouldn't be able to lead.

Mordaunt was hoping to catch them on the rebound which is why she hung on for so long.

DuncinToffee · 04/11/2022 12:50

Former Bank of England Governor Mark Carney says Brexit has badly damaged the UK economy and is now a major reason why interest rates are being hiked just as we go into a recession.

The dangerous dingy crossing situation has been created entirely by the British government. I think the French should stop facilitating this by allowing asylum seekers access to safe crossings. Let them buy tickets and board ferries or the train. Help them to travel safely. Put the border back onto British soil and let the UK be solely responsible for policing its borders

Notonthestairs · 04/11/2022 14:31

We can confidently predict that Braverman will fail in the same way, because – as discussed here before – “annoying all the right people” is not a programme for government. It’s a perfectly adequate professional philosophy to have if you’re gnashing your veneers on GB News, but it doesn’t deliver policy and it doesn’t even approximate to professional competence.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/nov/04/suella-braverman-chinook-home-secretary-priti-patel

This where we are. Patel & Braverman talked the right wing talk but they simply don't deliver. It's all righteous anger but minimal practical benefit.

But you know what let's keep complaining about school places & dentists whilst we fling another £140 million at Rwanda and ponder whether wave machines and gun turrets might work.

Blossomtoes · 04/11/2022 15:16

Thanks @Notonthestairs, I thought we were due another excellent Marina piece. This saga of incompetence is wearing me down. How much longer are these useless idiots going to cling to power?

12 years of Tory

Extraordinary stat from FT: "Over the past year, one in six UK adults has had a pressing need for medical examination or treatment and been unable to get access...This is the highest figure out of 36 European countries and almost triple the EU average."

Our health system is failing. Partly money; partly money being spent in the wrong way; partly connected systems like social care not working; partly deeper inequality/poverty.
