'Maybe Janiie needs to look at this and study the images of men, women and children making that perilous journey'

'We are not being invaded. This is a deliberate act to whip up hysyeria'

I didn't say we were being invaded? I'm all for legal immigration. Dangerous people smuggling in small boats not so much.

borntobequiet · 03/11/2022 19:58

But legal routes hardly exist. Our Government has pretty much facilitated the people smugglers’ business model. I’m surprised they don’t have an active lobby group.

DuncinToffee · 03/11/2022 19:59

Those dangerous people smugglers are not the ones on the boats or the ones being punished. Seeking asylum is legal

Safe routes are needed.

You dream of deporting vulnerable people to Rwands?

Maybe you could explain why you think Braverman is doing surprisingly well janiie and back it up with facts.

What's strange about it? I only popped in a couple of weeks ago as I thought the handwringing over Big Dog's alleged return waaaah! was amusing.

This pops on my 'I'm on' but I've never seen anything worth engaging with. Just as you mentioned me thought I'd respond!

Anyway Sunak doing surprisingly well, as is Braverman. Hopefully the evil and dangerous people smuggling will soon be under control.

@Janiie while you are here, any chance of engaging with why you think it was acceptable for a 56 year old man to have a birthday party while forbidding that to millions of children.

Or why you defended the same man when a known sex pest was a sex pest again?

No you didn't say we were being invaded but Braverman who you seem to admire said it as you well know.

What do you think of the chart showing per capita how we're not being invaded?

Our record is poor

Those women and little kids look very dangerous… 🙄

DuncinToffee · 03/11/2022 20:40

Didn't Patel suggest that Ukrainian women and children could be Russian spies?

Braverman hasn't actually achieved anything yet unless you think security issues and detaining asylum seekers beyond legal limits is an achievement. Sound bites about tofu doesn't make the Home Office more effective.

Conservatives have been in power 12 years. They continue to lurch right to set themselves as different to the version that came before- new & improved Conservatives!

We know they have no intention of resolving immigration - it's a useful distraction from the state of public services and the economy. If they genuinely wanted to tackle it they'd make liaising with France the priority, & invest in making the application process quicker and more efficient.

Braverman will fail and a new one will be shipped in to fail in a new and improved way.

I agree.

I think it's because they can blame immigration for the state of our public services.

They can't really use covid anymore.

No, it's the smuggling part that is dangerous. Perhaps I should have said 'people smuggling which is dangerous' for clarity. Soz.

BewareTheLibrarians · 03/11/2022 21:34

Interesting. Janiie doesn’t seem to be aware that Braverman wants to make small boat crossings “illegal”. Which seems to suggest they’re currently not illegal, doesn’t it? There’s also the govt’s own proclamation that asylum has to be claimed on British soil (outside of a limited number of resettlement schemes.) Can’t completely blame them, when even politicians refer to asylum seekers and illegal immigrants, making themselves look really very stupid in the process.

Roussette · 03/11/2022 21:36

Well....if the Government had taken up France's offer of a processing Centre in Calais, there would not be so much of the people smuggling would there?

www.france24.com/en/france/20211129-french-minister-urges-uk-to-open-legal-migration-route-amid-channel-crisis

But no. The Tories would rather whip up hysteria about pesky brown people coming here 'illegally'. (when it isn't actually illegal)
They've got to keep their far right base onside!

BewareTheLibrarians · 03/11/2022 21:37

(I will always whole heartedly agree though that boat crossings are dangerous, and also that the pressure on Kent is awful and is purely down to a failure of government in knowing this would happen and failing to prepare for it.)

@Blossomtoes don’t be too sure about the little kids - one I worked with this week laughed at my shoes and I tell you, I was wounded 😂

Notonthestairs · 03/11/2022 21:44

"I think it's because they can blame immigration for the state of our public services."

Handy just before a "difficult" budget.
Asylum seekers can be blamed for the lack of school places, dentists and GPs. Town centre & public services hollowed out? - nothing to do with central government funding cuts.

More to the point we've been without effective government all year. Scandal after scandal turned them inwards. We know Truss & Sunak were busy succession planning in January. Does that make for effective government?

Nobody should pretend those fractures have healed and as we've seen very recently Braverman isn't disciplined enough - or willing - to remain loyal. Johnson has been wining & dining MPs this week, waiting in the wings. He'd reappoint Brwverman in a heartbeat if it got him back in to Number 10.

Give it a minute and the merry-go-round will start up again.

Ok, but can you tell us what you think Braverman has done well?

OP posts:
BewareTheLibrarians · 03/11/2022 23:29

If anyone’s got the energy for another scandal…

“Mitie Care and Custody, the British company running the overcrowded migrant processing centre in Manston, reported a profit of £6 million ($6.9m) profit for the year to March 31, up 13 per cent from the year before.”

Well, so far so normal. Companies make profits, although it’s a shame they’re making a profit off spreading diphtheria and scabies. But as we’ve learnt over the last couple of years, wherever there are companies making a profit off human suffering, there’s a Tory connection.

“Mitie were illegally handed loads of covid contracts (testing, quarantine hotels etc). How? Well Tory Peer Philippa Roe is chair of the board. And Tory peer Baroness McGregor-Smith was CEO of Mitie for almost a decade.
So yes. It shouldn't need saying but it obviously does. Someone is earning A LOT of tax payers money here, profiting from misery. And it's not the people sleeping on cardboard at manston.”

mobile.twitter.com/Kirstytweets/status/1587043705311068163?s=20&t=v5yZoKLgaJ7iq5pxpuvo0w

(There’s an article linked in that twitter thread that goes into more detail about the other contracts handed to Mitie for quarantine hotels, covid testing sites (where workers fell sick) and other immigration detention/removal centres. In addition to Manston, another site they run was described as “dirty” with “poor record keeping” in its latest inspection report.)

mibbelucieachwell · 03/11/2022 23:38

What I want to know, at the moment, is how that stuffed shirt from the BofE thinks that putting up interest rates will bring inflation down. Given that the main driver of inflation at the moment is the oil and gas situation why does he think inflation will continue to rise seeing as inflation is the year on year increase? Is he deliberately trying to make businesses fail thereby raising unemployment and weakening the unions bargaining power in an attempt to cap wage increases? Remember how he told people not to ask for pay rises a few months ago?

the80sweregreat · 04/11/2022 04:44

The man in charge of the Bank of England looks a nasty piece of work . Cuts, rate rises and austerity do not affect him

Okay,

So punishing the victims of people smugglers stops the smugglers how exactly?

ClaudineClare · 04/11/2022 07:28

Braverman certainly is "doing a good job" of being deceitful, bigoted and profligate with tax payers money. Chinook helicopters to Kent? If she was a man I'd say she was suffering from small dick syndrome. As it is, she is just an insufferable fool.

Do you not think there may have been a reason, let's face it chinooks aren't lauded for their luxury and comfort. If she was being a silly extravagant woman, as seems to be the accusation here, then surely she'd have booked herself a ferrari or similar no?

A cursory Google will inform you that she was accompanied by Channel Clandestine Threat Commander Daniel O’Mahoney and they were observing operational ares.

Saucery · 04/11/2022 08:08

Damien Green talking (limited) sense this morning. Put more money into staff to process applicants.

Apparently they wanted to use the chinook for an alternative view of the channel to spot boats, problem was the weather stopped boats crossing (which was predicted)

No need for a chinook and they could have shared a car.

Now will you answer the question what you think Braverman has done well?

Ah they could have viewed the Channel from a car. Silly them. Perhaps you could contact the Clandestine Channel Threat Commander and offer your consultancy ?
