There is no possible justification - moral or economic - for treating pensions and working age benefits differently come April. We mustn't forget the context here: next year is set to bring simply huge income falls for lower income households

twitter.com/torstenbell/status/1582694621779410944?s=46&t=4wfxfDfRuxAa4GUf2iN57g

This is my view.

I agree, but the danger is if the Tories abandon the triple lock, they then have an excuse to everything in line with wage inflation instead of CPI/RPI. It is in everyone's interests for the triple lock to remain IMHO, including future pensioners.

Notonthestairs · 19/10/2022 12:37

We are back to where we were.

Policy tested in the media. Mauling. Followed by swift u-turn leaving Ministers looking ridiculous.

Zero cohesion & won't provide much security to MPs or investors.

borntobequiet · 19/10/2022 12:39

Who are the 'technocrats'?

I believe it’s a term of abuse used of experts and those foolish enough to listen to experts.
Brexiters were fond of using it for various EU bodies and individuals.

Notonthestairs · 19/10/2022 12:40

"It is in everyone's interests for the triple lock to remain IMHO,"
Agreed.

DuncinToffee · 19/10/2022 12:43

Just getting my lunch sorted and then will catch up.

Someone on the previous thread, sorry forgotten who, called it a W-turn, very apt.

54isanopendoor · 19/10/2022 12:54

Truss has just REVERSED Hunt's position on the Triple Lock for pensions !
I wonder if he agreed - or even knew - about that beforehand.
It seems Truss just spouts whatever she thinks folk want to hear then jogs off.
Reminds me of Johnson. (And Trump, come to think of it..)

Elodie09 · 19/10/2022 12:55

I respect Sir Keir Starmer. He is a very decent human being.
Why does Truss ask him what he is doing about the carnage which she has forced onto the UK population?
Is she utterly stupid, he is not the PM (yet) you are, ( for a short time) you utterly stupid person.
You are responsible , not the Labour party or its leader. Shame on the Tory party for keeping her there, absolutely appalling.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 19/10/2022 12:55

As my dear old uncle would have said
<in broad Irish brogue>
"Mother of fuck!"

54isanopendoor · 19/10/2022 13:00

and more of the endless pitching folk against each other so that we dont' look at the Govts 'emporer's new clothes' situation ...

Yes we should keep the triple lock. Yes Carers & the disabled should get rises in line with inflation (more really as Carer's allowance of £68.50 p/w buys than last year & disabled folk need to stay warm, travel to appointments & eat nutritiously)

But the vast majority of benefits are paid to those IN work, now falling into poverty too. We are ALL being damaged, apart from the super rich. It stinks!

DuncinToffee · 19/10/2022 13:12

They were facing a Tory MP 'rebellion' if they went through with the triple lock removal. It seems to have been agreed in advance.

tobee · 19/10/2022 13:12

Truss spad suspended

www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uk/top-liz-truss-aide-suspended-amid-ethics-investigation/ar-AA138AiV?ocid=sapphireappshare

It's just endless shit, isn't it?

Cornettoninja · 19/10/2022 13:15

It’s psychology gaming. Factually we all know you’re correct. KS isn’t in no. 10, none of this is within his power to control. However, that kind of comment is designed to lodge in peoples minds as a negative against labour. Facts don’t matter, he’s now perceived as ineffective.

They’ve done it repeatedly for ages.

DuncinToffee · 19/10/2022 13:16

Forgot to add Beth Rigby's tweet

twitter.com/BethRigby/status/1582701597041119233?t=1nt2tFs8cHCeZTi6sKLBbw&s=19
That there is a graphic clipped up for the PM announcement, looks like this not on the hoof. Truss was facing a clear rebellion, so decided to act. But again, being bounced, policy decisions day to day. Contradicting CX (Mon) & For Sec (Weds). Chaotic hand to mouth leaadership.

DuncinToffee · 19/10/2022 13:24

And there is also Mark Fullbrook

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/oct/17/no-10-chief-of-staff-accompanied-libyan-militiaman-to-foreign-office-meeting

Brought up at PMQs by Nick Smith

Nick Smith - The Prime Minister's chief of staff is in hot water, after lobbying on behalf of a Libyan Warlord & tobacco... is it wise to have a lobbyist at the centre of Downing Street?

Elodie09 · 19/10/2022 13:26

Thanks @Cornettoninja , I do realise what they are doing and why, I try to retaliate a bit by pointing it straight back out as a challenge to the utter drivel they come out with.
Thank you though, you summed it out very well!

Cornettoninja · 19/10/2022 13:29

sorry for teaching you to suck eggs @Elodie09, you’re very gracious Blush

its hard to know sometimes, clearly it works brilliantly on some people Grin

This stems from a Times report that Truss had dismissed bringing Javid back in to Cabinet because he was "shit" (yes that was the word used).

Javid had the first "friendly" question lined up for Prime Minister in PMQS.
Before PMQS Jason Stein was suspended pending investigation.
Javid didn't ask his question...

Happy bunch.

Notonthestairs · 19/10/2022 13:35

Brendan Clarke Smith blaming Labour for worrying pensioners about the triple lock!

Do they think we can't hear them?

Moronic.

the80sweregreat · 19/10/2022 13:36

Only yesterday Mr Hunt said about the triple lock
Today it is all fine !
Where do they stand ? Anyone know ?

DuncinToffee · 19/10/2022 14:16

Liz Truss has pulled out of a scheduled visit this afternoon
^^
No 10 has not given a reason for the last-minute cancellation of the trip, during which she was expected to take questions from broadcasters

DuncinToffee · 19/10/2022 14:18

👀Extraordinary moment in the House of Commons💥
^^
@William_Wragg confirms he's sent a letter into Graham Brady - and that he HAS to vote with the government on this afternoon's fracking motion, against his wishes. So that he doesn't lose the whip. And so his letter still stands.

L1ttledrummergirl · 19/10/2022 14:44

ClaudineClare · 19/10/2022 12:23

Sadly, you could get arrested if you are not one of the striking workers. Secondary picketing is illegal (thanks to Thatcher I think).

Can we actually do anything (legally) in this country anymore if it might upset the people in charge?
Can they arrest an entire population?
Can we hold a peacefully protest alongside the strikers?
How the hell do we hold the government accountable when they ride roughshod over our freedoms, rights and expectations?

54isanopendoor · 19/10/2022 15:00

@DuncinToffee
Truss pulling out of scheduled meetings last minute - is not good optics.
Again.

"He also previously advised Prince Andrew on media matters."

Well that's a good recommendation if ever I saw one.
