I predict a massive backlash to all this mourning once the funeral is over

So far the media is all about how we are grieving as a nation and no other voices are tolerated.

Its a pretence that will come back with a vengeance.

The country hasn't been in such a bad way for a long long time and millions have been spent on mourning someone many of us had no interest in.

Its wearing thin and we aren't at Monday yet....

Got tired of spewing bile on the Charles and Camilla thread?

Qwerkie · 15/09/2022 22:25

Gosh your opinion is so very interesting and what a refreshing take on it all

britneyisfree · 15/09/2022 22:28

Yeah. In October when people are cold and hungry.

Oldrockingchair · 15/09/2022 22:28

I hope there is. When the country and public services are on their knees, I’m not sure spunking billions on a funeral, cancelling operations & leaving tens of thousands of people without pay on Monday is a very good idea.
i fucking hate this country at the moment. It was bad enough when people lost their minds in covid, and it’s happening all over again.

CaptainBarbosa · 15/09/2022 22:30

Nah, people like seeing the military processions and whatnot. Majority of the nation likes to see it. Also majority of people understand The Queen can't just have a basic ceremony done the local crematorium and a plastic flower display that says "mummy".

On Tuesday everyone will just go back to hating the government and picking fights with Liz Truss 🤣

I'd argue there is already a pretty decent backlash already.

Even the Daily Fail had an article the other day about how ridiculous it was so many things were closed etc. It must be bad if they're complaining about it.

A580Hojas · 15/09/2022 22:35

I don't think so tbh. The cost of living crisis is an entirely separate issue and if we didn't have a monarchy we'd still have the crisis. I honestly believe most people have the intelligence to understand this.

ThisisCollie2022 · 15/09/2022 22:36

Nah

EveSix · 15/09/2022 22:36

Meh. "All this". Just don't engage with it? We haven't got a TV, and the radio's been off to save electricity, and it is bliss. I had no idea the Queen was dying, or that she had died until hours later. I've no idea what day of mourning we're on or what any of the funeral arrangements are. It is bliss.

wonderstuff · 15/09/2022 22:36

I don’t think there will be any backlash against the royals, people love a bit of pomp and ceremony.

I don’t think Liz Truss will have an easy ride, deregulating bankers bonuses while most of us face a massive reduction in standard of living is going to be a difficult sell I think.

underneaththeash · 15/09/2022 22:37

Why? every nation has a head of state and the elected version are often significantly worse in every way than ours. Putin, Trump, Berlosconi.

I would much rather have the King.

FayeGovan · 15/09/2022 22:38

Im looking forward to programmes like HIGNFY, they'll wipe the floor with all this shit. But they have to keep quiet just now, to show respect...

I think it would be good if the new King makes some sort of statement about it. Something to show that they do realise many people are suffering with it, and they are not living in an ivory castle.

Upsidedownagain · 15/09/2022 22:44

No I don't agree. It's a once in a lifetime event. We Brits love a bit of ceremony and revel in history. Once it's over, we can get back to blaming the government as usual (or the weather or covid or Brexit or the Russians or Trump or global warming or whatever).

gnilliwdog · 15/09/2022 22:45

I just did a big shop in the supermarket. The music was unrelentingly depressing, music to slit your wrists to. There weren't many people, but the 3 I passed close to were talking to partners about the cost of things - whether they could afford a pack of veggie burgers, how many each they would get, which cheese was cheaper, whether they had spent their budget. I think there may well be a backlash, but then again people might be so depressed nothing will happen at all.

It's not a separate issue. The cost of living crisis is directly linked to enormous wealth inequality, not just in the UK but globally. Watching millions spent on a family that possess billions of pounds worth of assets just by virtue of being born into it, at a time when people are anxious about their own finances and futures is jarring for some and quite understandably is triggering some angry feelings. I can see why lots of people feel it's tone deaf and crass.

I'm not anti-the Queen and personally I am happy to see a momentous occasion marked - and it is momentous. However, I'm not sure that I could justify the monarchy going forward. I know there are always claims that they bring in more than they cost but I haven't done the sums. I definitely object to the idea that they are better or more important than any other human on the planet just because they've been born into privilege.

Anyway, I digress. Whilst I'm not angry I don't think it's difficult to understand why lots of people are.

dropthevipers · 15/09/2022 23:06

Vegetable rights and peace.

MsFogi · 15/09/2022 23:08

I think the "feel good' factor of an extra bank holiday has been negated by everything being closed.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 15/09/2022 23:10

The cost of the funeral is 5p per household. I find it fascinating and plan to go to London to soak up the atmosphere. Not sure what people get from queuing to see the coffin but it’s a good thing we’re all different and I respect that choice.

I do think riots will come at some point but not about the royals. Liz Truss has a tricky time ahead.
