I predict a massive backlash to all this mourning once the funeral is over

So far the media is all about how we are grieving as a nation and no other voices are tolerated.

Its a pretence that will come back with a vengeance.

The country hasn't been in such a bad way for a long long time and millions have been spent on mourning someone many of us had no interest in.

Its wearing thin and we aren't at Monday yet....

I also think the right thing for the RF to do would be to pay back the millions. It’s cost.

Would be great PR and, imo, the right thing to do.

cushioncovers · 16/09/2022 06:49

We are too apathetic to rebel in big numbers about anything.

Lots of threads on this subject.
what did people think would happen?

Jammies · 16/09/2022 06:51

Media coverage of most big news stories is way over the top these days. 24 hour wall to wall news coverage becomes tiresome pretty quickly.

Moaning quietly is the British way.
The French are epic protesters.
Sadly when People do “Protest” here, it’s just about smashing stuff up - Rioting rather than being really proactive like the Gilet Jaunes.

Grumpybutfunny · 16/09/2022 06:53

I actually think it's the opposite. The queen funeral has distracted from the wall to wall depressing coverage of rising prices, the price of oil has fallen whilst Liz has capped the cost of gas/electricity. Ukraine is pushing back Russia. Public sector back dated pay rises are usually paid in September so by the time she is back with Philip god rest their soles the press won't be able to bounce straight back to the cost of living depression it will be about celebrating the new king, then halloween, bonfire night closely followed by Christian's!

If anything it will be a cold and wet January before twisting starts once again

romatheroamer · 16/09/2022 06:55

Although it does go on a bit and personally I would never queue for hours (it seems like one of those pilgrimages in mediaeval times but at least they're not bare-footed), the fact that this happened at the same time as a new PM is a diversion from contemplating the awful new cabinet.

Indoctro · 16/09/2022 06:56

I must admit I am shocked to read 4-7 billion the whole Queen passing and king being out in place , it will cost the UK.

That's not a acceptable amount in my eyes. Not when it appears this country is going to shit.

Dogtooth · 16/09/2022 06:58

I kind of agree. The Queen was a living link to our imperial past and while she was around we could pretend we were still as powerful and relevant. Her being gone adds to the almighty post-imperial hangover (Brexit is also part). We don't want to face up to our smallness.

Charles won't be as popular or as revered in the press, ditto William. I'm sure the papers have been sitting on all kinds of stories about them that will start to come out now.

Plus the country is on a downward path with incompetent right wing zealots in charge. Basics like health and food and clean water aren't guaranteed. It's not going to be a smooth ride.

anotherbrewplease · 16/09/2022 07:01

fullfact.org/economy/queen-funeral-costs/

It looks more like around £8 million - still a lot, but a billion is a heck of a lot more Grin

inmyslippers · 16/09/2022 07:03

Yes lots of countries have left the monarchy. I imagine more will follow suit. Sadly I don't think I'll see England drop the royals in my life time

gogohmm · 16/09/2022 07:03

@Fortboyard

But if you don't watch the news there's nothing different about life - there's no forced mourning it's personal choice. Nothing has changed for me except a bonus bank holiday

NashvilleQueen · 16/09/2022 07:03

Counterpoint: I think it will do more to increase support for the monarchy and the stability it brings than anything else has in recent years.

My prediction is every bit as valid as yours.

LovingTheseAutumnSnippets · 16/09/2022 07:06

That's interesting as I have a renewed interest, warmth and understanding of the royal family and am feeling more British.

It may upset some people, but for others it will intensify national pride.

anotherbrewplease · 16/09/2022 07:08

@Dogtooth

Sadly I wholeheartedly agree with:-

For me it beggars belief that Truss won't increase a windfall tax for the BP and Shell companies who are literally making billions of pounds in profits every quarter. They are presently putting in less than 5 per cent back into renewables.

And her other brainstorm is to use fracking and North Sea oil/gas.

Yes folks - it will be a shit show of stupendous proportions. And I don't say this to my teenage kids, as it is too depressing.

Noteverybodylives · 16/09/2022 07:13

I think some people just need to stay away from SM or watching the news for a while as you know it’s going to be about the RF.

willithappen · 16/09/2022 07:15

The only backlash is usually from people who don't know what they are talking about and can't believe how much money 'we' give the monarchy, calling outrage and want them to be abolished and then will u-turn if that ever happens once they realise our taxes would actually increase without them

pictish · 16/09/2022 07:19

I agree with you.

Its shocking because it’s not true.

MarshaBradyo · 16/09/2022 07:25

Apart from disgruntlement from those who don’t want to hear about it whilst it’s happening - on SM usually -I doubt it

I do take the point the media cycles are brutal here and I reckon it’s getting to us but in this one I’ve found it easier to avoid

Fortunately I stopped watching tv and news in particular years ago so I haven't seen any coverage except what I have purposely viewed on my phone. i.e. I watched the queens journey through Scotland for a while waiting for a train. I will watch the funeral on Monday. That's it.

Workinghardeveryday · 16/09/2022 07:27

EveSix · 15/09/2022 22:36

Meh. "All this". Just don't engage with it? We haven't got a TV, and the radio's been off to save electricity, and it is bliss. I had no idea the Queen was dying, or that she had died until hours later. I've no idea what day of mourning we're on or what any of the funeral arrangements are. It is bliss.

No tv or radio, what do you do on an evening?

ReneBumsWombats · 16/09/2022 07:29

Royal pomp and ceremony actually increases support for the Royals. Polls show their popularity increases at official occasions like weddings and jubilees.

I think this could be accurate.

I saw a video of an elder of Aotearoa indigenous people, explaining that while the Queen didn’t have much power, she did make steps that hugely helped them out. The Video was amines at the younger group of his own people, who, were under the impression The Queen had more power than she did and that she has completely ignored them.

When she first died there was so much vitriol on Social Media, a lot of it was misinformation or seemingly mixing up Queens. A lot of Non British people are countering it and it appears to be making a difference.
