I predict a massive backlash to all this mourning once the funeral is over

So far the media is all about how we are grieving as a nation and no other voices are tolerated.

Its a pretence that will come back with a vengeance.

The country hasn't been in such a bad way for a long long time and millions have been spent on mourning someone many of us had no interest in.

Its wearing thin and we aren't at Monday yet....

We are going to hell in Royal hancart, ma'am and make no mistake, innit. Other good news is Theresa Coffey doesn't like the Oxford comma.

Seems to me that some people would positively enjoy a backlash, rioting in the streets, etc. to reinforce/help to justify their own aggressively republican opinions.

Agree.

What utter nonsense @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

its actually not nonsense. Every few months, threads like these come up.

Some MNer thinks there’s going to be riots and a huge backlash and is clearly hoping for it. Though obviously not always Republicans.

It happened all through covid and for any slight problem there’s been before.

I do think some republicans are so angry because they thought more people would be objecting. I think it’s shown them that more people either aren’t fussed enough to fight over it or do want the RF.

Why else would the threads be full of so much information? If you are convinced your stance is the right one, you don’t have to use points that aren’t based on fact. And there’s been a lot of that recently.

Yes I agree. Then when the riot predictors are questioned as to whether they will be joining in the riots, looting and ruined livelihoods and businesses, terrifying anyone unfortunate enough to get caught up in it and other consequences of riots, they don’t answer.

Every few months these threads come up... and there haven't yet been the predicted riots.
A bit like the Express forecasting every few weeks that we'll have a foot of snow/hurricanes/flooding/heatwave (pick one depending on time of year). I think they do it on the basis that if they do it frequently enough then they can claim they're right occasionally.

sunglassesonthetable · 16/09/2022 19:40

It was all shit before the queen died.

Rising prices, energy crisis, huge nhs waiting list, barrister strike, bin strikes, rail strike, rising interests rates, post brexit shite, bloody tories. It's all pretty shit.

And it's still there! And we all know it! Yes we do!

I feel like the Queens death and funeral is like one last crazy gasp before we have to own up to all that shit. I'm loving watching the live stream lying in state and laughing at #The Queue on twitter.

It's like one last round, make mine a double, before you have to be sensible and go home .

The shit is all waiting for us. Don't doubt it.

No idea what this " backlash " is though.

One last thing - unless you're having an op cancelled, for which I have the utmost sympathy- if you're not enjoying the funeral circus - turn over the channel onto iplayer or netflix. Listen to a podcast. Play music. FFs get off facebook. Get off MN or stay on the dog threads. It's as much as YOU make it. If you live in central London take it on the bloody chin. It's the Capitol City what the fuck do you expect?

People are literally REVELLING in being appalled by it.

JohnPrescottsPyjamas · 16/09/2022 20:10

The big question is; are we going to see an explosion in covid cases in the next two weeks with the hundreds of thousands gathering in London and queuing for hours to (rather ironically) view a coffin?

Surprisingly, not heard any concerns being raised in the media - unlike Bournemouth beach last year which they were wetting their pants and panicking over!

Damnloginpopup · 16/09/2022 20:21

Big fucking wow. I am losing my team and my job in three months. Heard today. Tupe over so no redundancy. I'll get offered something I'll end up refusing so no redundancy. Or stay and take a lesser role and take a 37.5% cut in pay as the alternative...won't find anything equivalent in pay and conditions locally either. Will lose my lifestyle too (the hours suit me) and my energy bills have doubled.

But, I am very happy to see Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II being celebrated and sent off with due regard to the duty she has shown to this United Kingdom of mine. I'm far happier my pounds are spent on her funeral than being pissed away on a thousand other things the govt see fit to throw it at.

Damnloginpopup · 16/09/2022 20:22

Quadrupled, not doubled. Since June 21.

greenhousegal · 16/09/2022 20:27

The last hurrah. I have no doubt that support for the monarchy will hold, but I don't think it will have the same resonance as it did when QE was the boss.

Seems to me that all they are good for is providing gossip fodder, and frocks and hats, and leaky pens and rumours of affairs and having separate quarters and whatever else you can think of that will keep them in the news and relevant. Huh?

This... It's easy to spend 99.9% of your time away from any mention of the Queen or King.

Is it not obvious why there’s a difference between, this year post pandemic and last summer, mid pandemic?

sunglassesonthetable · 16/09/2022 22:09

Tbh nothing new there. To be expected.

The anti monarchists are a bit of fixture here in Wales and they're super pissed off about having another Prince of Wales dished out to them.

The thread has been on MN already for about a week.

onlythreenow · 16/09/2022 23:43

Supermarkets shut all day on Monday, not on .

Pathetic!

Not really, because by November when all the mass mourning is over and there’s nothing else in the news, the media will be resurrecting the Covid fear - almost guaranteed. It’s just atm, the queens death is a far more interesting way to fill the headlines.

Maybe but Martin Lewis and Cost of Living will reappear

I’m dreading the onslaught of doom bait that’s incoming. I’d take leading with queue at capacity any day. At least it slows down the click bait media a bit.

vera99 · 17/09/2022 17:41

It's as if the rest of the world and indeed anything other than the Royal Mourning has ceased to exist. Good time to bury bad news (bankers bonus cap lifted anyone ?). Pound at historic lows....

MarshaBradyo · 17/09/2022 17:48

Don’t worry full force doom media will be back on Tuesday. Those who missed having the depressing news will be happy to be surrounded with it again

vera99 · 17/09/2022 18:04

Or reality depends on whether your glass is half empty or half full. The ever witty late Christopher Hichens on our new King opined from beyond the grave......

MarshaBradyo · 17/09/2022 18:09

I’m sure that’s great but I can’t watch links

I’m generally half full person for sure, usually positive, but I know the media will be fully back to its scare the public doom bait in no time. Something they learnt to do well in Covid. It’s good for the ££ and a formula that isn’t going anywhere soon

Many mners will be happy again.

justmewithmylifetoday · 17/09/2022 18:09

Bore off. Moan moan moan moan.

vera99 · 17/09/2022 18:11

well bore off is better than leave the country if you don 't like it. But only just 😁

BogRollBOGOF · 17/09/2022 18:46

A bit of pomp, ceremony and leaky pens is a great distaction from The Energy Crisis which will still be as energetically crisising away on Tuesday as it was on Wednesday the 7th. It's real, it's shit, but we're no worse off for having a break from the media dooming about a situation that's not changing significantly by the day.

Britain tends to go in to riot mode in the summer, and high unemployment helps. It's unlikely that we will hit riot mode in the next 6 months. The people most likely to be struggling are also highly likely to be busy holding down jobs.
I did think we could have riots over lockdowns, but BLM arose at about the right pressure point and was a political diversion. After that there was opening of pubs and more services which eased the pressure. Sometimes I'm happy to be wrong!

Seeing estimated figures for funeral costs, how many are already paid for (presumably the coffin) how many are ongoing costs (e.g. military salaries) how many will just be accomodated on another day e.g. grocery shopping on Tuesday not Monday.

I can you saying that to anyone who might complain about a Labour government in the future.
