Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

I am sure it will all become clear Friday when Kwarteng presents his Growth Plan, formerly known as Emergency Budget.

Does growth have a different meaning now?

Everything I have heard suggests that Truss is aiming to shrink the country.

the80sweregreat · 20/09/2022 17:32

From what I can make out, Liz Truss and the new chancellor are aiming to grow the economy by having tax cuts and borrowing.
Admittedly,I'm not an economist and this is only based on the hustings and what she has said ( plus her mentor , Patrick Minford , who has also been interviewed in the past )
A few old chancellors such as Phillip Hammond and Rishi Sunak say this is a disaster waiting to happen ( only not worded as stark as this) and not really a good idea.
Have to see how Friday goes I suppose.
It sounds madness to me too, but then I was never fan of Mrs Thatcher's polices and these seem similar.

Oh, do you want to hear my joke about trickle down economics?

It's a good one, but 99% of you won't get it.

Is she really using ‘disproportionate’ as a plus point? Confused. Because tax cuts that benefit higher earners is disproportionate but that’s not a good thing, is it?

the80sweregreat · 20/09/2022 17:40

Didn't George Osborn and David Cameron try the ' trickle down ' effect?

Grin Very good

Wasn’t it Reagan and Thatcher that came up with trickle down economics? I don’t know how many decades they (or the people who vote for it) need for evidence it doesn’t work.

Saucery · 20/09/2022 17:43

People have to feel confident about any increase in their salaries or they will mostly just save the difference for a rainy day. It might trickle down to the housing or building markets but not enough to boost the economy as a whole.

the80sweregreat · 20/09/2022 18:01

BBC news just now Liz Truss said
' I'm happy to be an unpopular PM'
.. well that's good , because sounds like she will be!

That's a corker!

In all seriousness it is known that trickle down does not work... right from Reagan days.

I saw some of Truss's interview. And Chris Mason Political Editor was really arse licking and saying how she answered questions but her predecessor didn't.
I very carefully listened to what she answered to his questions. He must have cloth ears because she was not answering the question.

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2022 18:49

She wants higher salaries, but not really when you are a railway worker, postal worker, barrister, dock worker and anyone else on strike. And let's not mention NHS and education.

the80sweregreat · 20/09/2022 19:05

They are hoping that the bankers will ' trickle down ' on all of us from a great height.
I'm sure they will , buoyed up with crystal champagne and whiskey chasers. Can't wait.

Fladdermus · 20/09/2022 19:24

The trickle down effect is all well good on paper but doesn't work in practise as wealth can't trickle down if it's hoarded in off shore bank accounts.

the80sweregreat · 20/09/2022 19:28

The rich only become richer by hoarding money and not paying for their round in the pub.
It's basic economics, Ms Truss only has to see how the Johnsons behaved at number ten : getting everyone else to pay for things.
It's how the rich operate.

Quite. The trouble with trickle down is it's a very accurate description. We need wealth to flow through the economy, not trickle.

"People on higher incomes generally pay more tax so when you reduce taxes there is often a disproportionate benefit because those people are paying more taxes in the first place".

I'd like to understand a bit more about this disproportionate benefit? To whom?

I still don't understand how they are going to pay to overhaul social care and the NHS backlog whilst reversing the NI rise that was supposed to pay for it.

Are they going to borrow more to pay for it or just pretend there is no backlog or issues with social care?

Is it a mystery? Are we supposed to have the memory of goldfish?

We aren't meant to hold them account for things that they have said themelves.

We aren't meant to have any intelligence or god forbid question the people who work for us on what they are doing to help us.

Joe Biden has her number. It's sad that the conservatives are desperate to hang on to power so much that they won't stop any of this.
Even the ones who are concerned that it might be a disaster.

Lonelycrab · 20/09/2022 19:53

I'm happy to be an unpopular PM

In other words: look at all the damage I can do until I’m gone😐

itsgettingweird · 20/09/2022 20:46

She's so very cock sure of herself isn't she?

She's happy to be unpopular? So she doesn't care if her party end up not getting re elected because she can do what she wants for 2 years and she's going to do it her way.

Did no one tell her the next vote isn't just the most right wing of the country and Tory members?!

the80sweregreat · 20/09/2022 20:48

I'm beginning to believe Ms Truss is unhinged.
She probably thinks she won a General Election not just a leadership vote in by people who wasn't keen on Mr Sunak. Living in a parallel universe.

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2022 20:55

The Treasury is refusing to publish a forecast of the UK's economic outlook alongside this Friday's mini-Budget.

Truss unhinged, did anyone see the video of Kwarteng during the funeral?

I’ve thought this for some time now.
