Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

I had forgotten Coffey wanging on about what grammar she likes and dislikes and telling her civil servants to be positive to her about everything. You couldn’t make this new government up.

the80sweregreat · 16/09/2022 20:05

Theresa Coffey is a nasty piece of work all round
She fits in well!

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/kwasi-kwarteng-to-bend-rules-for-30bn-tax-cuts-bj8w0z3n9

You don't bend rules, you break them.

"Economists said that the tax cutss_, which will be announced on Friday, mean that the government is likely to be in breach of the present fiscal rules. The rules require that debt falls as a proportion of national income in 2024-25, the last year of this parliament.

During the Tory leadership contest Liz Truss suggested that her plans would meet the rules, saying that the cost of tax cuts would fall within £30 billion worth of financial “headroom” forecast by the Office for Budget Responsibility in March.
There are concerns, though, that the energy crisis and a slowdown in the economy will put that headroom under significant strain, leading to the rules being breached."
This was predicted time and time again over the summer and refuted by Team Truss. Reliably unreliable.

The Tory's "bending the rules".

That's pretty much their manifesto promise. and if it wasn't it's the only thing they've managed to succeed in doing since 2015. (They weren't much better the 5 years before but they were defined th the good ole days of this reign!)

EXCLUSIVE: Liz Truss's chief of staff has been interviewed by FBI agents about an alleged criminal plot to bribe a politician and influence a US election

Mark Fullbrook quizzed this year after detectives made secret request via Metropolitan Police and NCA

He is being investigated for his alleged role in bribing an American politician in the American colony of Puerto Rico. What next?

Joe Biden arrived last night and apparently has cancelled a scheduled meeting with Liz Truss.

The Truss Biden meeting is postponed until after the funeral

No 10 said a "full bilateral meeting" between the PM and Mr Biden would instead take place at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.

NEW: Mr Fullbrook will not be joining Truss for the UN general assembly meeting in New York next week

Sources insist it is for workload reasons — related to forthcoming economic announcements — and entirely unrelated to FBI investigation.

Shock he really said this

Lindsay Hoyle says "we should not allow anything to overshadow the most important event the world will ever see, and that's the funeral of her Majesty".

How do people feel about Truss's alleged plans to have 'investment zones' where people get to pay less tax than others who don't live in loyal tory areas

At least she is consistent. She wants to take every opportunity to make the country less equal and isn't prepared to let anyone get in her way.

DuncinToffee · 18/09/2022 23:22

jgw1 sums it up well

newnamethanks · 19/09/2022 01:09

Ohhhhhh it's all so grim. The future does not look promising other than for the free market loons who have elbowed their way into power. Or slid in, I suppose, ably greased by quantities of cash to hand with promises of more. I can't bear it.

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2022 08:02

BBC says a trade deal with the US is on the back burner and Truss won’t be pressing for one with Biden because she knows it is unattainable

Jason118 · 20/09/2022 08:18

A US trade deal will need the NHS on the table. It's already on the floor so it could be sooner than we think.

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2022 08:43

Liz Truss - I want to see people get the high paid jobs they deserve

LT - Yes...

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2022 16:29

And there is more

Truss doubles down, telling Sky: “I don’t accept this argument that cutting taxes is somehow unfair. People on higher incomes generally pay more tax so when you reduce taxes there is often a disproportionate benefit because those people are paying more taxes in the first place".

She brushes asides concerns about falling pound and state of economy...

"My belief is that Britain’s economic fundamentals are strong. We have relatively low debt compared to the rest of the G7."

Blossomtoes · 20/09/2022 16:45

Take comfort Duncin, if she carries on like this she’ll be gone in no time. Raab wasn’t wrong when he said electing her was the Tory party’s suicide note.

Notonthestairs · 20/09/2022 17:04

"People on higher incomes generally pay more tax so when you reduce taxes there is often a disproportionate benefit because those people are paying more taxes in the first place".

I'd like to understand a bit more about this disproportionate benefit? To whom?

I still don't understand how they are going to pay to overhaul social care and the NHS backlog whilst reversing the NI rise that was supposed to pay for it.

Are they going to borrow more to pay for it or just pretend there is no backlog or issues with social care?

Is it a mystery? Are we supposed to have the memory of goldfish?
