Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

Accountability, what accountability

Liz Truss’s energy announcement is in form of “general debate” and not ministerial statement, as per @elenicourea, meaning govt doesn’t have to give Opposition usual details in advance and PM avoids sustained scrutiny from MPs…

I know our minds are focused on tne energy policy but NHS backlog increases to 1 in 8 - and yet the NI increase designed to help tackle this (and social care) will be reversed. How are we going to pay for it?

Irrelevant as that is a problem for the next Prime Minister.

Ain't that the truth

Notonthestairs · 08/09/2022 11:40

I suspect they just won't implement the policy and the backlogs and provision for social care will get worse and there will be more threads about the dire state of the NHS and ridiculous comments about their neighbours niece's best friend apparently getting breast enlargements on the NHS
Perfect environment for private health care to flourish for those that can afford it (although I also suspect that pool of people might get smaller).

Truss: New energy price guarantee. From Oct 1 household bills capped at £2,500, saving households on average £1,000 per year. For TWO years. A very expensive policy

Businesses scheme a work in progress. Truss said there will be six month scheme giving 'equivalent support' to that for households, with a review after 3 months to target support for most vulnerable businesses (not given that detail).

mibbelucieachwell · 08/09/2022 11:57

Is she giving way (to mp's questions) more than usual for a statement to HoC?

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 11:59

How much will it cost? No details today. Truss says cost will be announced as part of the chancellor @KwasiKwarteng fiscal statement. But its a HUGE package with huge consequences for the UK economy

Truss now talking about ramping up energy supply:
- New oil and gas licencing round
- Lift ban on fracking
- Acceleration new clean energy nuclear wind solar

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 12:08

This is a fair summary Angry

Liz Truss energy plan:

1. Borrow £130bn
2. Give it to energy giants who just got an unearned £170bn windfall
3. Energy bills still go up at least 80%
4. We then repay that £130bn loan from our tax
5. Meanwhile she cuts tax in a way that benefits the rich 235x more than the poor

Starmer was just fantastic with his facts, figures and quotes from heads of energy companies. He was on fire

Anyone who supports Truss and the Tories should be ashamed of themselves

We are being stitched up.
It's all smoke and mirrors isn't it?
I've screenshot Duncin toffee's paragraphs below as it sums it up so well.
The headlines will say ' Liz truss saves the day '
Hmm ,

Hmm ,

No, the smoke and mirrors have gone. Truss hasn’t so much let the mask slip as whip it off. Ever since May’s nasty party conference speech the Tories have pretended to care about the population. We had Cameron’s “we’re all in it together”, May’s concern for the “just about managing” and Johnson’s levelling up. That’s all gone now and they’re not even pretending that they don’t believe in redistribution or fairness. It’s nakedly all about big business and the uber wealthy now.

This is interesting from Chris Bryant.

Something is going on. Perhaps Truss has realised that the words 'windfall' didn't mean us giving them even more money, but actually taking money away from them

I'm dying to know what this is all about. Second day in office and come unstuck already????

Hmm.

Feels quite strange re HMQ

tobee · 08/09/2022 12:58

What did the speaker say @DuncinToffee ?

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 12:59

I feel quite sad really.
I've lost all my immediate family and it is horrible dealing with it all.
Blossom , yep , I agree.

What did the speaker say @DuncinToffee ?

He read out the statement from Buckingham Palace

"doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision"

tobee · 08/09/2022 13:07

Thank you .

Close members of the royal family heading to Balmoral seems ominous.
