Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

But I still found the content of her in pmq very lacking. Let's see what she comes up with tomorrow on the energy crisis. I don't think she did herself any favours today despite not being soundbites and bluster like Johnson

Notonthestairs · 07/09/2022 21:57

Interest rates on the up -

"In case you missed it, this statement from the Treasury, about what the new chancellor told the governor of the Bank of England, means interest rates will be increased by the Bank more than they otherwise would have done. It’s the price of tomorrow’s £100bn energy bailout"

She is more level headed than Boris Johnson I'll give her that.
Starmer will find it hard to break down her defenses. It won't be a walk in the park.

She will have prepared for today to the nth degree, and of course came to it with a reasonably clean slate. I suspect she will struggle a lot more as time goes on.

"Welcome @SteveBakerHW, our new Minister of State for the Northern Ireland Office."

High profile Eurosceptic who considers NI protocol unfinished business & who has previously suggested using Article 16.
Marvellous.

Best way you could possibly think of to ensure Ireland reunites. Well done, Ms Truss.

L1ttledrummergirl · 07/09/2022 23:45

I thought Starmer went easy on her today. So much he left unsaid.
Some of her own backbenchers were not happy though.
I don't see why she is reminding us that she is now the Prime Minster everytime she answered a question, maybe she can't understand how that happened anymore than the rest of us?

The conservative front bench looked as though they were having a great time, the dire situation they have put the people of this country in through their parties choices and poor governance seemed like a joke to me. They really couldn't give two shits about the country.

They were back to saying that the poor people are only poor because they don't work hard enough and so deserve to be poor and starve to death, that if they were more affluent they would be worthy of consideration and support. That the reason people are needing help is because they are feckless.

I was not impressed today.

tobee · 08/09/2022 02:53

Yay! Great! Victorian Tories back! Innit marvellous?

True.

However I think it really helped him that he also has some actual words to argue with.

They were both much stronger than I thought they'd be. Both had a chance to get their points across.

Will be much better in 2 years when we have a GE for people to actually have been able to hear what each side think and believe and their reasons for it.

Yes, she want even trying to disguise it either Sad
Can't remember exactly how she worded it but I typed it above. I was actually flabbergasted at her blatant inability to understand that some people just cannot work.

Well if they can't work why do they exist as a drain on us all?

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 08:04

Ah yes, the poor not working hard enough

The new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has assembled her cabinet - but how representative is it?

Our analysis has found that 68% of the cabinet attended a private school, compared to ~7% of the UK population.

@tobee unfair to Victorian Tories. They believed in law and order, moral values and were courteous to the Royal Family, not asking the Queen to do unlawful things.

Veeragall · 08/09/2022 08:33

I know it's not a popular view on here but there are two types of people who don't work. Those who don't want to and those who can't. Those who can't absolutely deserve our support and help, more than they currently get. Those who don't want to work shouldn't expect to be supported by those who do work.

I would agree with that, and those that can work, but don't, should be helped more to get back in the workplace. It's good for both mental and physical health

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 08:40

Money and privileges will never be eroded though.
I saw the pics of the Royal children off to their lovely private school today and how I wished every child could have access to this kind of education too, but that will never happen.

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 08:41

£55,000 a year apparently

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 08:43

I also hazard a guess that the percentage of people choosing not to work and live on benefits instead is very small.

The aerial view of the school was gobsmacking. It was like a country estate

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 08:55

There is also the problem of ageism too, many that want to work are put off by employers who only want the young on a lower wage.

55 k a year ! It's another world isn't it?

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 09:02

When I used to take my son to football matches on Saturday mornings in the Reading/Berkshire area we drove past quite of few of those kind of estates that were schools.

He never played there, we always ended up at some nearby village green.

InMySpareTime · 08/09/2022 09:31

I'm astounded at the cognitive dissonance needed to simultaneously believe that "the poor" should just work more/harder to get off benefits and also that Minimum Wage should be set so low that full time NLW work still gets a benefit top up.

Either it's ok to claim benefits or wages should always be enough to live on.

Tories gonna Tory, but their entire message to the struggling poor seems to be "have you considered just being rich like us instead?" With no help to actually make that happen.

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 09:49

The Royals are only rich because it's the way it is and we have allowed it to continue for many centuries.
They may have worked in the army or helicopter pilots , services etc but these jobs in the normal world wouldn't pay 55k a year school fees however much you might ' aspire' to.
Ms Truss was lucky her dad had a good job and was able to help her and give her a leg up from her awful state school as well , many bright children don't have this open to them. I've noticed that she doesn't mention her own schooling much now.
Aspire nation is just meaningless waffle to make the normal hard working people feel even more bad about themselves.

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 09:53

The state of education in this country is nothing to boast about so no wonder they stay quiet about it.

Notonthestairs · 08/09/2022 10:46

"Liz Truss’s energy announcement is in form of “general debate” and not ministerial statement, as per @elenicourea, meaning govt doesn’t have to give Opposition usual details in advance and PM avoids sustained scrutiny from MPs…"

twitter.com/pippacrerar/status/1567796259993313282?s=46&t=EawxPY3hHryzWgOqkYXNkw

I'd suggest that they are either not very confident about the policy and/or they aren't that confident that Truss can handle the resulting questions.

The sooner private schools are banned, the better.
