Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

"Asked why Liz Truss didn’t mention levelling up in her speech today Iain Duncan Smith tells us it’s become a pretty meaningless phrase. It was a key pillar of the 2019 campaign - now dead? #C4News"

That was pretty much the only bit of the Conservative 2019 manifesto I was genuinely interested in!

'That's an odd correlation. What do crime statistics several years ago have to do with his personal sleaziness?'

Nothing. I'm saying a 20% reduction is crime is rather more relevant then a posters vague opnion that 'he is sleazy!'

Given his relationship history and his action in appointing Pincher and then being incredibly slow to deal with him when he ran true to form, it's a fully evidenced opinion.

I’m know several 70 year olds who are now considered ‘far left’ simply because they want more of the same things for today’s young people that they had- like affordable housing, more social mobility, a fully funded NHS with dental care and prescriptions free, or a free university education. They also want less of the things for today’s young people that older people had to suffer- like casual racism and sexism, lack of maternity rights, lack of abortion and contraception rights, lack of employment rights and unequal pay between men and women.

It's equally extraordinary how wanting the law to be obeyed has also become "lefty". Hence the fact that lawyers are automatically termed lefty lawyers for the crime of trying to hold the government to account in terms of, for instance, upholding the constitution and adhering to international treaties - let alone dangerous nonsense like complying with statutory obligations to the poor, the disabled and refugees.

Confirmed Therese Coffey Health Sec and Deputy PM

And Kwasi Kwateng confirmed as chancellor

Of the infinite number of parallel universes there must be very few where Therese Coffey is considered Deputy PM material. Or indeed Health Sec material.

the80sweregreat · 06/09/2022 20:31

Totally depressing all of it.

Eastangular2000 · 06/09/2022 20:32

It really is a cabinet of intellectual pygmies. By the by I cannot believe that Therese Coffey is only 50!

the80sweregreat · 06/09/2022 20:44

Who is education secretary?

itsgettingweird · 06/09/2022 20:45

I agree about the lefty lawyers comment.

I feel it smacks of gaslighting. Because the Tory's are also meant to be the party of law and order?

It's another sound bite but it's so so awful and I think quite dangerous.

The law is there to be upheld. End of.

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 18:07

Of course he is. He obviously didn’t expect to keep his job after describing the election of Truss as the Tories’ suicide note at the next election.

That's amazing has Raab actually got something right?

Notonthestairs · 06/09/2022 20:56

Johnny Mercer's wife hasn't held back on Twitter.

"He asked her ‘why would you do this, who is going to be better at this role than me, which of your mates gets the job, you promised a meritocracy?’
PM - I can’t answer that Johnny

This system stinks & treats people appallingly

Best person I know sacked by an imbecile @trussliz"

Wonder if the erasing of Women from the job title is intentional or just an oversight ......

Appointing a women and equalities minister has always felt like an afterthought, particularly as a third or fourth position. Especially noticeable in the aftermath of Sarah Everard & Sabina Nessa.

Rees-Mogg is surely disqualified by his conflict of interests from being Business Secretary. His only interest in business is lining the pockets of himself and his friends.

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 22:47

Sacking Mercer is absolutely contemptible. A spiteful act by anyone’s standards. His wife’s assessment of our new PM is on the money.

Baggyeye · 06/09/2022 23:10

Am going to bed relieved that Boris Johnson has been consigned to the history books - the out and out worst PM I can remember. Good riddance to the lying, corrupt, inarticulate charlatan.

I hope Teresa May is laughing tonight!

Raab, Shapps and Bully-Girl Patel gone from the Cabinet too. Small mercies in bleak times.

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 23:18

The Telegraph reckons he’ll move to a safe red wall seat (is there one?) in readiness for a come back.

DowningStreetParty · 06/09/2022 23:49

I couldn’t agree more Novum
It feels very dangerous when a political leader has successfully made a virtue (for their followers) of doing whatever you like, at whomever’s cost. Populist Johnsonian Bullingdon Club Trumpian ethics.
Like when the Daily Mail called the judiciary Enemies of the People.
And sidenote- that happened when Truss was Justice Secretary, and as the link above notes- she was very slow in defending the judges who had been put at risk by this awful rhetoric. She’s no principled politician.

It is all just a conspiracy by the left wing media in the UK. If you actually take the time to look at Boris' record of hard work and getting things done, like the War in Ukraine, the vaccine roll out and getting Brexit done, you would realise that he is one of the best an even worse Prime Minister than you thought.

Apparently the rumour among Mid Beds tories is that that is why Dorries will move to the HoL

Piggywaspushed · 07/09/2022 06:52

Mid Beds isn't Red Wall.

God I hope this isn't true. I actually couldn't bear it.

InMySpareTime · 07/09/2022 07:01

I'd have thought Boris' deep unpopularity could render any seat unsafe.
