North Korea has come to mind after reading the latest spate of benefit bashing threads on here.

"Jack Leslie, senior economist at the Resolution Foundation, said: "The outlook for inflation is highly uncertain, largely driven by unpredictable gas prices, but changes over recent months suggest that the Bank of England is likely to forecast a higher and later peak for inflation - potentially up to 15% in early 2023.
"While market prices for some core goods - including oil, corn and wheat - have fallen since their peak earlier this year, these prices haven't yet fed through into consumer costs and remain considerably higher than they were in January."

Well this is cheery.

Fucking hell

Prrivate Eye

Tbf on this point you get £10 extra at christmas every year in your DLA or pip claim.

That wasn't just a 2021 thing.

The cost of the jet though Shock I hadn't realised that was coming out of taxpayers money.

New analysis from @lukesibieta at @TheIFS shows the Government are on track to break their promise to "restore per pupil funding [for schools] to 2010 levels in real terms".

School funding in 2024/5 will still 3% lower, in real terms, than 2010. Since the war we've never come close to having a 15 year period where spending on schools was lower at the end than the beginning.

Added to this that the pay rise they've agreed to will come out of the already existing and depleting budgets.

DuncinToffee · 03/08/2022 19:20

It's depressing isn’t it and it hardly got any media coverage.

Piggywaspushed · 03/08/2022 19:30

It is depressing. I have never felt anyone much cares about education so long as the kids are in school and out of people's hair. Lots of ills are blamed on schools of course and lots of problems expected to be solved by them .

MN is a bit different , of course, because so many parents but once the kids are out of school, it's off the radar.

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 19:37

Well when Tories talk about education it immediately becomes a discussion about grammar schools IME.

Piggywaspushed · 03/08/2022 19:40

It does. But they are also state schools and underfunded...

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 19:44

I don't doubt that piggy. But they are touted as the solution to all education ills (admittedly that might just be based my family).

tobee · 03/08/2022 19:47

Love the bit about Michael Gove being "Boris Johnson’s Emotional Support Turbot" Grin

Piggywaspushed · 03/08/2022 19:47

No grammar schools by me so we don't get this. Just the sharp elbowed catchment area dances!

This is interesting on Rishi's vilification plans:

Same cabinet, different blonde?

Thanks for that twiter thread Piggy

Same cabinet, different blonde?

Not so sure about the different blonde....

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 20:17

That thread has given me pause for thought.

borntobequiet · 03/08/2022 20:18

Grammar schools are like black holes, they distort the discourse about education around them. I’ve lived and worked in grammar school areas and it’s very difficult to combat the entrenched views as to what constitutes a good education (As and A stars at GCSE and A level) and good educational outcomes (Oxbridge or at a pinch Russell group university entrance), despite the fact that these are not realistic or suitable achievements for the vast majority of students, who mostly go on to have happy and productive lives regardless.

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 20:37

Both Sunak and Truss have indicated they'd lift the ban on new grammar schools. I'd like to know how they would fund further schools and whether this would come out of existing LA budgets.

But then I'm embarrassed to say I don't know the difference between academies and free schools as opposed to comprehensives (probably a topic for a different thread!).

I wonder if any of the promises made in the leadership contest mean anything. Membership might grumble but once they are ensconced in Number 10 what are they going to do?

Stairs close and extended family seem to have swung firmly behind Truss.

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 23:29

Deals being struck...

Ian Duncan Smith as Chief Whip. Braverman as Home Sec.
Badenoch as Education Sec. ("Let's get rid of all those extra school staff and peripheral activities")
Patel to Chairman.
Kwarteng as Chancellor.
Clarke as Business Sec.
Sunak in Heath (remember all those useful US health care contacts he built up).

A Cabinet chock full of the ERG.
I do try to keep my online swearing to a minimum but we are fucked.

Blossomtoes · 03/08/2022 23:41

Oh please God no - not Braverman in the Home Office. As if Patel wasn’t bad enough.

Quia · 03/08/2022 23:49

And Notso Cleverly in the Foreign Office.

And we all thought Johnson was scraping the barrel.

Quia · 03/08/2022 23:53

Fucksake, 330 odd MPs, and she can't find someone brighter than Braverman to be Home Sec?

No Javid or Zahawi? She may come to regret having them on the outside pissing in.

Notonthestairs · 04/08/2022 00:02

Tweet linked to underneath Sun story.

Truss apparently has committed Cabinet spots to the ERG (something supposedly Johnson reneged on?!) She "needs strong characters around her".

Some in the ERG want Redwood for Chancellor.

I'm holding in a lot of swear words in right now.
