Voting for the next prime minister has been delayed after GCHQ warned that cyber hackers could change people’s ballots, The Telegraph can reveal

The Conservative Party has been forced to abandon plans to allow members to change their vote for the next leader later in the contest because of the concerns.

The sudden alteration means postal ballots have still yet to be issued to the around 160,000 Tory members who will pick Boris Johnson’s successor. The ballots had been due to be sent out from Monday, but members have now been warned they could arrive as late as Aug 11.

They really are disaster prone, aren’t they?

cakeorwine · 03/08/2022 07:01

Sounds a bit like The Undeclared War

But who would hackers try to get to be PM?

Yes what a dilemma.
Maybe just nullify them all.

borntobequiet · 03/08/2022 07:57

All the votes I mean.

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 08:20

I thought it would be a problem when they announced it.

I guess hackers could have spoiled a large number of ballots or obviously weighted in favour of one candidate- either way it would have created more chaos and left the process vulnerable to legal action (see Trump) and further concerns about corruption.

Yes, I was startled. Are there any other elections (of comparable status) that allow people to shilly-shally like this? I don’t think they thought it through, but no surprise there.

borntobequiet · 03/08/2022 09:31

Apparently you can change your vote on AIBU by clicking the other option (I haven’t tried it). Maybe they were inspired by the MN upgrade? If so, heaven help us.

Grin yes that wouldn't bode well!

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 10:06

Not that anything bodes well at the moment

Jesus, has he read 1984 and seen how well that sort of thing goes?

This is horrendous. Can’t quite believe I’m reading that. Who’s going to judge what qualifies as vilifying Britain? Braverman?Sad

Cornettoninja · 03/08/2022 11:24

Cult, cult, cult, cult, cult

Lonelycrab · 03/08/2022 11:33

I’m starting to suspect one of them might offer a referendum on the death penalty, just to “out nasty” the other one, the way this thing is going. Be like catnip to much of the Tory membership I imagine.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/aug/02/former-counter-terrorism-police-chief-attacks-rishi-sunaks-prevent-plans?

Rishi Sunak’s proposals to strengthen the government’s anti-terrorism programme risk “straying into thought crimes” and are potentially damaging to national security, a former senior police chief has said.

GreenLunchBox · 03/08/2022 12:02

I honestly think I they know people are so fed up that they will be taking to the streets soon. Hence them banning noisy protest and now talking badly of the UK will be treated as terrorism. And people say we're ridiculous when we talk about fascism 🙄

Does that include people who live here, but would rather live and pay taxes somewhere else?

Blossomtoes · 03/08/2022 12:14

Sunak said on Tuesday night that “Britain is a beacon of freedom, tolerance and diversity,”

It bloody won’t be if he gets his way. Can he seriously not see the irony?

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 12:28

Sunak is looking for an "in" with the right of the party. His support currently sits a bit more centrist (only a bit!) but they'll make up a minority of the membership.

I can't read the whole article - is vilified defined? It seems like another gibberish policy that won't take much picking apart before it collapses.

Of course what they should actually be thinking about is this -
In its latest forecast the National Institute of Economic and Social Research said that about seven million families would be living “paycheck to paycheck”, while for 1.2 million people energy bills would exceed disposable incomes by next year.
The think tank projects that the economy is on course for a recession in the coming months as rising energy and food bills and higher taxes lead to a “permanent” fall in households’ disposable incomess_.

It said that the new prime minister should instruct their chancellor to use falling debt and deficit levels to fund welfare increases for millions of households at risk of having to choose between “eating and heating”.
Adrian Pabst, deputy director for public policy at the institute, said that the most vulnerable households would have to “resort to credit, build up payment arrears, or see their savings wiped out”, adding: “The incoming government must provide immediate emergency support ... as the energy price cap rises and recession begins to bite.”

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/inflation-and-tax-rises-to-leave-5-3m-with-no-savings-says-think-tank-niesr-gn3pbh77r

But maybe it's too much to expect candidates to concentrate on making citizens lives better.

tobee · 03/08/2022 12:30

It's not that different to what Putin is doing currently

GreenLunchBox · 03/08/2022 12:51

Sunak is just prostituting himself out to the Tory members now. It's excruciating.

Look at this show of himself he made, joking about his skin colour like an 80s comedian. All to get a group of Daily Mail readers to accept him. Toe-curling.

So if I say the country has gone to the dogs, it's government are incompetent fuckwits, and brexit is a pile of shite, I'm going to jail? Good job they no longer have access to European Arrest Warrants.

You’ll be in good company, they’re going to need to increase resources by a lot to implement.

Notonthestairs · 03/08/2022 14:44

It's the natural progression of telling Remain voters "if you like the EU so much why don't you move there".

Daily Mail must be struggling with itself - I bet they love Sunak's policy but can't stand him!

Are they aiming for North Korea, where the difference in being in prison is a question of the level of cruelty and starvation you face?
