Sorry, I wasn't clear, that was me paraphrasing Tweet.

tobee · 04/08/2022 00:22

Well see soon enough

Deals being struck...

Ian Duncan Smith as Chief Whip. Braverman as Home Sec.
Badenoch as Education Sec. ("Let's get rid of all those extra school staff and peripheral activities")
Patel to Chairman.
Kwarteng as Chancellor.
Clarke as Business Sec.
Sunak in Heath (remember all those useful US health care contacts he built up).

A Cabinet chock full of the ERG.
I do try to keep my online swearing to a minimum but we are fucked.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/19411420/iain-duncan-smith-liz-truss-chief-whip/

This is the stuff of nightmares.

I thought you were penning a worst case scenario. Then I read the article

Sunak as Health Secretary and Braverman as Home Secretary is actually terrifying

the80sweregreat · 04/08/2022 06:34

That potential cabinet below is so scary
Deeply depressing

So as I said upthread, they might go so far to the right they will lose the support of the average Conservative voter - either by them not voting or by an increase in support for Labour / Lib Dems.

Hopefully

Was chatting to one of my neighbours a few days ago. We haven't talked politics much before, but safe to say they are true blue. They were telling me that nationalising industries such as rail and energy and selling them to foreign governments was a mistake...

DuncinToffee · 04/08/2022 09:34

Braverman is declaring war on woke witch trials aka diversity training.

She is also having another car crash of an interview on Sky

Just another day in Tory

Blossomtoes · 04/08/2022 09:57

Mr Toes’ leadership ballot paper arrived this morning. Down the right hand side there’s a jagged red column with pictures of Starmer, Rayner and Thornberry, it’s captioned “These people want the keys to Downing Street”. It has an air of “Who the fuck do they think they are, don’t they know Downing Street’s ours?”.

He’s deeply unimpressed, “Cheap jibe” was his comment, followed by “And Truss will hand the keys over”.

Roussette · 04/08/2022 10:36

What's the point in viliying Labour shadows? Is it to encourage people to vote as it might be embarrassing if the numbers are low?

We both think it’s to appeal to the born to rule element. The upside of this is that this entire debacle has shaken the conviction of a die hard Tory who’s voted for them for nearly 50 years. He hates Johnson and is reluctantly voting for Sunak - he doesn’t want either of them.

I’m torn between feeling sorry for him (as he’s in the same place I was during the Corbyn years) and quiet satisfaction that if someone like him is so deeply unhappy that probably reflects the feelings of many old school Tories.

Roussette · 04/08/2022 10:52

That is really interesting Blossom. I can't talk politics with my DH at all because he says the most annoying things imaginable!

I doubt my NDN is so conflicted as your DH, he really rates BJ and dislikes brown people, Mark Drakeford, Nicola Sturgeon and 'woke'. There's no hope for him whatsoever. Weird really, because his lovely wife could not be more liberal in her views.

I can see why. It’s definitely straying into the territory of patronising sensationalism.

Anyone eligible to vote in the leadership is sufficiently engaged in politics to understand the political landscape. It cheapens the whole leadership process.

Blossomtoes · 04/08/2022 11:10

We’ve only just become able to discuss politics @Roussette. For years we avoided it because we held such opposing views. Ironically it was Brexit and the Johnson government that made it possible. The prorogueing of parliament and the cull of decent Tories shook him to the core and made him question everything. Cummings not being sacked for Bernard Castle was another nail in the coffin, then Partygate came along. We were in complete agreement on all those things.

My DH will never vote Tory ever again due to Johnson and his antics. He becomes more left leaning as time goes on. I'm the opposite. However we often talk politics. It's never a problem

ancientgran · 04/08/2022 11:26

My husband, mid 70s, has voted Conservative all his life until 2019. I don't think he'll ever vote for them again.

Badenoch in education is horrifying. Schools have been underfunded for years and it is getting worse and she won't help.

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2022 11:58

I am assuming Badenoch will go full on culture wars with education which could lead to a lot of anxiety and the stifling of thought.

That's great. Unfortunately my DH is head in the sand they're all the same mentality.
And he likes to wind me up Grin . He'd say something like "oh that's good Boris is managing to relax after working so hard and managing to have a little get together even during covid, he deserves it"
(He doesn't mean this at all but likes to see my reaction. It doesn't work! He's always been a contrary sod)

Interestingly, my DCs are very liberal, and I echo what they feel 100% and they take him to task sometimes. We've been married over 3 decades and I don't even know how he votes and don't wanna know!

NEW: Bank of England raises interest rates to 1.75% from 1.25%- the biggest rise for 27 years.

Cornettoninja · 04/08/2022 12:12

And so it begins…

Ignoring the wittering about the French, if you choose, have a look at this graph...

"

Easily done...

Roussette · 04/08/2022 16:16

Honestly. Aren't we just going to get same old same old with Truss?

Adam Bienkov
@AdamBienkov
Liz Truss has been reported to the Standards Commissioner by the Lib Dems for failing to declare a ‘Fizz with Liz’ dinner for Conservative MPs, which was held in her honour at a Mayfair members club and funded by a Conservative donor.
