It hadn't struck me til now that LT would be the first comp educated PM. Shame she puts down her education so much. I wonder what class degree she actually got and whether she blames this on her school somehow?

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2022 11:00

BTW, Sam F was privately educated.

Roussette · 26/07/2022 11:21

Liz Truss got what is known as 'the aspiring politicians degree'
Politics, Philsophy and Economics.
From Merton College, Oxford

No bad from a rubbish comprehensive set in 22 acres of grounds is it?

I think I’d be worried working in any sector Truss was “interested” in.
It was bad enough in Education under Gove, and in comparison he was sane, moderate and well informed.

Piggywaspushed · 26/07/2022 11:25

Indeed OP but the class of degree is shrouded in mystery.

That aside, she is Tory meritocracy in action. And yet, she is slagging it off. Presumably because Rishi is ploughing the self made furrow.

Thanks for answering my question about the possibility of Johnson in the Cabinet. I suppose all he has to do is sit on the backbenches and stir the pot occasionally. I'm sure Dacre will continue to take the Johnson's phone calls.

Truss hasn't given a 1-2-1 interview yet has she? I wonder why not.

The last bit I heard (before I left to keep my blood pressure under control) was Truss saying she would start paying back the covid debt in three years' time. Quite apart from the major question of whether she would still be in power then, what on earth does she think is going to happen in three years that will make us so much better off? What guarantee has she got that Putin will be dead or sane?

That's the point that I couldn't listen and watch any longer!

DuncinToffee · 26/07/2022 14:01

FFS, again with the "as far as I am aware"

NEW: Boris Johnson writes to liaison committee about 2018 meeting with ex-KGB agent Alexander Lebedev at Italian villa while he was Foreign Sec.

“This was not a formal meeting, nor something that was pre-arranged… As far as I am aware, no Government business was discussed”.

the80sweregreat · 26/07/2022 14:20

It sounds as if Liz Truss wants to put the recent covid borrowing debts on the back burner for a while.
Maybe it's just plan to hope that she and her party won't be around in a few years time to deal with it all and then the Labour Party will get all the blame for running up debts and borrowing and having to go with an austerity plan of action to bring it all down again. People have short memories and a lot of the furlough payments made have long since been written
off too. The opposition parties really need to make sure people remember who had to do what. She wants to borrow more money and have tax cuts straight away.

tobee · 26/07/2022 14:20

Yes and back to "contrary to some reports". It's people having it in for him that he highlights. Not the things he's done wrong that are in plain sight.

tobee · 26/07/2022 14:21

Sorry the above was in response to @DuncinToffee post

tobee · 26/07/2022 14:22

"People have short memories "

Yes and especially if the right wing press and politicians are "misremembering" for them in the interim.

Roussette · 26/07/2022 14:52

How can he say "as far as I am aware". ???

He will know, we aren't talking about 10 people there, it was just him and his violin playing lover talking to an ex KGB agent straight after a nerve poisoning on British soil.

That means 'yes, I did discuss government business but I shall lie as usual and hope I get away with it'

OP posts:
ClaudineClare · 26/07/2022 14:54

Maybe Johnson had too much vodka to be able to remember what was discussed

the80sweregreat · 26/07/2022 15:06

In early January 2020 the police were called out to a domestic incident in London concerning Carrie Symonds and Boris Johnson. Was this after he met with the Russian man?
(The mention below of violins made me remember something on the news about it. )

Blossomtoes · 26/07/2022 15:58

It was before he was PM in June 2019. The membership still voted for him.

Roussette · 26/07/2022 16:21

Duncin That is a very interesting read.

Obviously the "as far as I am aware, no government business was discussed" is as murky and misleading as we guessed.

He just doesn't want to be caught out lying when he obviously is. He can say... loook...... I did say "as far as I am aware"

I enjoyed that link @DuncinToffee. the comments underneath are thought provoking too. I’d like to see this questioned further formally.

what gets me is even though he’s basically fuelled by lies he’s never confident enough in his own structure of reality to just give a straight answer. That suggests he’s referring to events that he knows are vulnerable to coming out in full. Once you realise that you realise exactly how dodgy he is in a spectrum of dealings.

I’m also fairly surprised that he doesn’t realise his evasiveness now won’t be enough to save him. You’d have thought he’d have realised that after Pincher. His character has been destroyed.

I really hope there’s enough momentum for the committee to escalate this.

Notonthestairs · 26/07/2022 17:59

Lord Bamford stepped in after they had to change their wedding party plans - on wonder what's in it for Bamford?

"The Grade 1 listed home belongs to JCB chairman Lord Bamford who has given some £14 million in cash and gifts to the party since 2001.
Sources suggested the Tory peer, who backed Mr Johnson's leadership bid in 2019, was covering at least some of the the cost of the party.
Mr and Mrs Johnson are understood to have organised a marquee in the 1,500-acre grounds where guests will be wined and dined before dancing the night away."

Great post by David Allen Green.

Johnson never knowingly gives a straight answer.

balalake · 26/07/2022 18:35

'As far as I am aware'- is that code for 'I got too drunk to remember'. I grow more convinced by the day that Mr Johnson is an alcoholic.

tobee · 26/07/2022 18:57

Oh no! Drama in the Sky debate. Hope Kate McCann is ok.

Kate McCann fainted. Harry Cole was supposed to do the debate but has covid.
