BREAKING: Second round results of the Conservative leadership contest.

Rishi Sunak: 101
Penny Mordaunt: 83
Liz Truss: 64
Kemi Badenoch: 49
Tom Tugendhat:32
Suella Braverman: 27

Braverman out.

tobee · 14/07/2022 15:03

Any posters care to analyse?

itsgettingweird · 14/07/2022 15:04

Looks like it'll be a Sunak and Mordaunt final.

If that's the case I'd be going for Sunak. Not because I like him and don't think after his FPN he should be in. But he's the only one currently with what seems a workable economic plan. (Even if I also don't think he'll do much good for the poor with it).

Plus he's probably the best candidate for killing the party full stop!

Lord Frost talking about Penny Mordaunt who was his deputy in Brexit negotiations.

Worth a listen.
He doesn't have one good thing to say about her. She was basically incompetent

Frost of course being an expert in competence, I think he has a degree in it?

DuncinToffee · 14/07/2022 15:14

This view on Mordaunt is widely shared in Brussels - with one important qualification. One senior EU official tells me she "..was even less qualified than Frost"

So Braverman's votes will go to Johnsonian Truss? Tugendhat- if he folds - will split Sunak/Mordaunt. Badenoch's will tip either Truss or Mordaunt?
Sunak v ?

OvaHere · 14/07/2022 15:27

Looks like it'll be a Sunak and Mordaunt final.

I don't think that's a given just yet. As each candidate is knocked out those votes go to the others still left. A lot of them could go to Truss so there's still potential for it to be a tight race for second place. It does seem likely that Sunak will remain in first place though.

Absolutely no idea. Braverman too right wing? Tugendhat not right wing enough? Badenoch new face? Truss has the ERG, Sunak the whips, Mordaunt a nice video?

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2022 15:28

Wallace hasn't openly backed anyone yet. Suspect he'll swing a few voters when he does

Sorry my was to @DuncinToffee

tobee · 14/07/2022 15:29

Oh fgs my Grin

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2022 15:37

It is still possible that it could be Truss v Mordaunt.

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2022 16:04

Whatever happens there will be vast amounts of horse trading go on to offer jobs, access etc.

DuncinToffee · 14/07/2022 16:15

Is the next vote on Monday?

C4 have a debate tomorrow and ITV on Sunday

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2022 16:25

Yes I think the voting begins again Monday.

Oooh, I had me one of them there hysterectomies a few years ago and fgs take it easy. My recovery period was rather 'mixed' - that godawful gas! Take care of yourself. Flowers

I got an extra week off work with mine. Lovely doctor said he'd give me a sick note till a certain date, I said shame that's half term so he changed it and I had a week off with the kids.

Hope your recovery goes well @itsgettingweird

DowningStreetParty · 14/07/2022 16:47

I could see Morduant v Truss happening because the Mail media have lined up against Sunak.
Mordaunt and Truss are both so low calibre I’d actually feel safer if they tried some ‘government of all the talents’ type model. Hmm

Roussette · 14/07/2022 17:03

There is a Sky debate monday night too.

The more I look into Mordaunt the more concerned I am. She is very anti climate change, has accepted £10K donation from a climate denier org, she has lied about her military service, she's flip flopped her views on trans ppl, her voting record is truly awful in every which way, and even her promo vid showing nurses clapping and her saying they are heroes... was of a Spanish hospital. Another liar a la BJ.

I hope she fails

She also would seem to be remarkably careless like Johnson

gulliblestravels · 14/07/2022 17:33

It seems she might have his avoidance of truth tendencies too. There is a rumour that Bill Gates is backing her and if that is the case, she must be throwing out the climate denier etc vibes to pull in right leaning members votes, taking them from genuine right wing candidates.

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2022 17:43

Is Gates a climate change denier?

borntobequiet · 14/07/2022 17:52

Bill Gates is absolutely not a climate change denier.
Anyway, why on Earth would he want to back a low calibre lightweight like Mordaunt?

borntobequiet · 14/07/2022 17:54

Bill Gates
