Angry So, the latest ONS death registration data is out. The UK has now recorded over 200,000 deaths from Covid since the start of the pandemic. 200,000! that's 3 out of every 1000 people living in the UK! How is this "getting the big calls right" ?! 1/2

I wonder what that looks like when you look at the older age groups - how many more older people died because of Covid? People who may have expected to live longer but who had their lives cut short.

I am actually quite scared of some of them, they are so right wing.

If the Conservative MPs are not careful, they might go 'too right' and face a backlash at an election because people don't want our country to be too right wing.

They might be so obsessed with their views that they forget what voters want.

Oh well at least covid is all over now HmmAngry

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2022 09:45

3/4 of my family have had covid again in the last fortnight. And no it wasn't like a cold - more like bad tonsillitis.

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2022 09:48

"If the Conservative MPs are not careful, they might go 'too right' and face a backlash at an election because people don't want our country to be too right wing."

Possibly. But whilst the media back the law&order/fiscally responsible Conservatives 🙄 it will be difficult for any other party to make head way.
I suppose as the cost of living crisis escalates people may rebel.

Thanks everyone! I had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago and doing really well.

I'm back to work next week (for 4 days as then we break up for summer Grin)

Oooh, I had me one of them there hysterectomies a few years ago and fgs take it easy. My recovery period was rather 'mixed' - that godawful gas! Take care of yourself. Flowers

derxa · 14/07/2022 09:55

I read online that a few people thought Penny Mordaunt was Adele! I can see why , but I think she resembles a blonder Jane McDonald myself Let's compare all the candidates' looks with a famous person. 🙄

AnneKipankitoo · 14/07/2022 09:57

Thanks for the new thread @Roussette .

DowningStreetParty · 14/07/2022 09:58

Thank you for the new thread. More results at 5pm today. I’m trying not to disengage with this election because I find the tax-cutting candidates so mind bogglingly awful in their own different ways it’s actually scary.

meanwhile (Party before Country, yet again!) the Tories have fucked over the Online safety bill in favour of their internal electioneering shitshow.

The Guardian reports that:
‘Alex Davies-Jones, Labour’s shadow culture minister, said MPs’ work on the bill “might all now be for nothing thanks to the self-interest of this useless government” and called the news an “absolutely devastating blow and another example of the Tories prioritising their own ideals over people’s safety online”.

While the Conservatives committed to the bill as part of their 2019 manifesto and it will remain in the Commons rather than being killed off completely, it could be watered down by the next administration to appease those figures who have spoken out against it during the leadership contest.’

Reaction in the Guardian:
‘Andy Burrows, the head of child safety online policy at the NSPCC, said that the delay meant families would “continue to pay the price for the failure and inaction of tech firms who have allowed harm to fester rather than get their house in order”.’

www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jul/13/no-10-vacuum-has-made-tories-give-up-on-governing-says-opposition

Wow… Slow clap to all the candidates scrabbling about for power to sit as PM with no mandate apart from their own party members’, at a time of national crisis on multiple fronts.

Slow clap to the Tory government stumbling on to serve the personal interests of the PM- which clearly does not include protections urgently needed for children that they themselves have previously acknowledged.

This is why the caretaker thing, the drawn out internal elections the whole self-appointed timetable is so wrong. It’s preventing politics from happening when we need it to happen. It’s warping priorities. It’s neglecting the country. Boris must go now. Not in September. He’s still not fit to govern. The people around him aren’t fit to do so either. This is all about Boris’ ego and power as always and it’s so self-indulgent, it’s really disgusting to see it playing out. I just want a general election.

Take care Itsgettingwierd

Blossomtoes · 14/07/2022 10:02

Thangam Debbonaire is brilliant. I’d love her to be Labour leader.

DowningStreetParty · 14/07/2022 10:05

as the BBC reports, the Online Safety bill's aims are (were?) to:

prevent the spread of illegal content and activity such as images of child abuse, terrorist material and hate crimes, including racist abuse

protect children from harmful material

protect adults from legal - but harmful - content

As the BBC also reports:
‘The legislation largely puts the onus on the tech giants, like Meta - previously Facebook - and Google, to figure out how it would meet those aims. It also empowers Ofcom as a regulator to police whether they do a good enough job.
Firms that fail to comply with the new rules could face fines of up to £18m, or 10% of their annual global turnover, whichever is highest.

The bill also requires pornography websites to use age verification technology to stop children from accessing the material on their sites, and there will be a duty for the largest social media platforms and search engines to prevent fraudulent advertising.’

The Conservative party leadership election wouldn't be everyone's choice of viewing whilst recuperating

It's been more these threads than watching TV. Although that first week I did rather indulge sky news between naps Grin

I had it in January and said if I didn't know I had covid I would have thought I had tonsillitis.

DowningStreetParty · 14/07/2022 10:11

Agree about Thangham Debonnaire!

itsgettingweird · 14/07/2022 10:15

Yes blossoms it really has. It was just odd timing my surgery date came 5 weeks after mum died. She'd have been thrilled for me as she couldn't wait for me to have it done and get my life back! (I'm only 41!)

Wilkolampshade · 14/07/2022 10:18

Thx fr the new thread.
When waking this morning, Today burbling on in the background, I had a kind of moment when I though what fun it would be if they just kept voting everyday forever until there were just. none. left....

SpindleInTheWind · 14/07/2022 10:22

The Labour Party has surely got to be getting ready to fight and win and election, whether it's this year or in 2024. There's no way either the right-wingers or 'socially liberal' my arse Mordaunt can run a country without turmoil, especially if there's a backdrop of regret about getting rid of Johnson.

But, as pp say, Labour faces the usual uphill climb against the press and Tory donors.

I was thinking, if there are any issues that are close to people's hearts, now is the time for them to start/continue pushing them with Labour politicians - don't leave it till an election is called. Labour needs time to turn that big ship around. I hope people really keep pushing, whether the issue is women's rights, children's safeguarding, the climate emergency, cost of living and wages, housing costs, education & SEN, health care, or all of the above - I really want Labour to get a grip on these things for the country, not just for their young activists.

Call me delusional, but maybe what's happening with Mordaunt, and the fact the next election could be a knife edge, could force Labour to bloody listen for once and change tack on its gender woo bullshit and allow a 'lost' tranche of women (and men) to vote for them again.

Truss says as PM she will "unleash the full opportunities" of Brexit.

Some might ask what on earth they've been doing in government all this time...

We’ve had a brexit opportunities minister to manage that avalanche of opportunities and everything.

It’s almost like Truss hasn’t seen JRM’s collage. bet it’s got post it notes and everything.
