Here is the old thread... let's keep on top of what's going on!

Thanks for the new thread.
Hope you feel better soon 'it's getting weird' it's a big op to have. Be careful
I read online that a few people thought Penny Mordaunt was Adele! I can see why , but I think she resembles a blonder Jane McDonald myself
A couple more are knocked out tonight I believe?
There is a Labour lady on sky news now with Kay who is talking sense. Not seen her before ( Denonnaire?)

Thangam Debbonaire is fantastic, I know someone who lives in her constituency and she's popular

Someone mentioned this at the end of the last thread. It is depressing but true.

twitter.com/DoubleDownNews/status/1546801544321896448?s=20&t=NGTCEG2kToW_aaQWr0yK4Q

Just managed to watch it.

That's illuminating and hopefully powerful.

Shame he couldn't get any media outlets to allow him to make a documentary that aired. It would reach far more people.

Why can't we?

Believe me, there's worse out there Derxa. We are very restrained on here

Liz Truss seems to be claiming she is from the Red Wall area of Roundhay in Leeds...

I lived in Roundhay at the same time she did. Most definitely not a Red Wall seat - in fact quite an exclusive area of Leeds

I mean I guess it is red wall in that it regularly (always?) returns Labour politicians. However, yes, it is very much not working class Labour. More educated left wing professionals who care about environmental issues was my experience. May have to name change after this but I went to the same school a few years after her and do not recognise the description she gave! (With the school she has some claim not to have grown up in the purely exclusive Roundhay demographic as it also covered parts of Harehills in it catchment but somehow I doubt those were the pupils she mixed with)

the80sweregreat · 14/07/2022 11:06

I'm sorry for lowering the tone earlier but I saw an article yesterday saying that a few people didn't recognize Penny Mordaunt ( which is fair enough ) but it also hi lights how out of touch people are with politics and it's only on mumsnet that I can engage with people who care about these things. I would take time to look up people if i didn't know who they were.
I have one friend who takes an interest, but mostly people switch off or not interested or you get ' they are all the same ' arguments.
Liz truss spoke earlier on. 'Aspiration Britain 'is her theme , but she didn't mention cutting the budgets for schools. Which was good. Was keen on her own deals with Australia, but no mention of climate change which she added to with trips on private jets.

I'm a great Jane McDonald fan or rather I'm a fan of her persona. What's happening here is that PM seems to have a real chance of winning the contest. Let's trivialise this woman by comparing her to a light entertainment performer who makes a big deal about being non intellectual.
Who will we compare Kemi to?

Cedilla · 14/07/2022 11:17

I’m seriously scared at what lies ahead. I didn’t think it could get worse than Johnson but this lot are actually barking.

Good article about Mordaunt here: t.co/Lks92MfzV1 I haven’t read the others in the series as I’m too depressed.

I also read an interesting Twitter thread yesterday questioning Mordaunt’s much-vaunted Naval Reserve claims. Seems that actual Navy people don’t think they stack up. Just fancy that.

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2022 11:28

"What was striking is how flat 'culture war' issues were, how removed so much of the SW1 conversation which dominates politics and a fair bit of the media really is, despite fact it's often done in name of 'real people'. Any clip where a candidate talked about those issues tanked."

Lewis Goodall bang on the money here. Well worth a read of this thread.

Its the economy, stupid.

The comparison to Adele was made in a focus group shown on TV last night. HTH.

I can see why people thought PM looks like Adele. Jane McDonald? No you're having a laugh or not as the case may be.

AnneKipankitoo · 14/07/2022 11:44

Thanks @Cornettoninja , I did not actually link it . Thank you for doing that .

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2022 11:46

The Goodall focus group was on Newsnight last night. It was an interesting watch. An outspoken man was not a fan of Rishi at all - mainly because of connections to BJ's government.

They listen to Penny Mordaunt and liked her style. DH likes her (may fancy her... hmmm). He's not a Tory but is quite Red Wallish in some views mainly to wind me up he says silly things about 'wokery' and sexuality etc. In terms of serious voting issues, this culture wars stuff isn't even on his radar. He's not a Tory voter and the Rwanda stuff did not play well to him, mainly as a complete waste of resources and money and that does also seem to be coming through from the public, but not the membership. They are v out of touch.

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2022 11:49

I didn't see NN last night - will see if I can squeeze in a bit of catch up later.

Blossomtoes · 14/07/2022 11:51

Goodall’s summing up seems spot on to me. When people are constantly worried about inflation and their money going less far every month, the last thing they’re concerned about is whether the party they’re voting for “knows what a woman is”. It’s a luxury for the affluent.

Also done ✅

Piggywaspushed · 14/07/2022 11:57

Arguably , Jane McDoanld would be a better Prime Minister. I like her personality too.

I don't think it is a criticism to say Penny M looks like her. No one was comparing intellects in a way that criticised either woman.

Runnerbeansflower · 14/07/2022 11:57

✅ Done

Lonelycrab · 14/07/2022 12:14

Done too.

DowningStreetParty · 14/07/2022 12:19

I agree the economy is the number one thing. We will be in dire straits nationally come the autumn without someone competent in power.
plus the fact that the Tories have been saying they ‘know what a woman is’ for about a year and they have done less than fuck all to help women despite that apparent knowledge. So that’s not any kind of vote winner for me.
All the parties have failed women. But most urgently as a nation we need to be able to afford to eat, have a home, travel to a job, buy childcare, clothes and food for our kids.

the80sweregreat · 14/07/2022 12:23

Mordant is getting a bit of grief on Twitter.
Seems she is seen as too left wing ? A friend of Bill gates, pro vaccine and of course her views on women. They are out to get her ( but Twitter is like that )

The right are absolutely out to get her but the grassroots want her and the consequences for the parliamentary party if she’s not in the last two will be cataclysmic.

DowningStreetParty · 14/07/2022 12:39

Done. Thanks for posting Piggy

This current crop of Tories seem to have a theme that they are very distrustful of judges, hence also their want to downgrade the power of judicial review. JR has been an important route to protecting members of the public in a lot of situations against public institutions overreaching their power. I think it’s an essential check and balance on organisational policy.

for anyone else interested in that survey by the Joint Committee on Human rights:
