I definitely don’t want anyone who was involved in any scandals like the party gate debacle and received a fine. I’m not a Conservative voter but I think they need someone with some distance from Boris and the current government. So definitely not the likes of Sunak etc. they need someone with a strong moral core/integrity now to win back the trust of the public. We’ve had years of scandals and lies so the Conservatives need to move away from that if they’re going to have any chance of winning a general election.

wheresmymojo · 09/07/2022 10:05

Personally I think Rishi's wife's finances were a non-issue whipped up.

The money is made in India, she pays taxes on it in India. They pay UK tax on the money made in the UK. That's the law in both countries.

GoldenOmber · 09/07/2022 10:06

Let Heseltine have a go.

wheresmymojo · 09/07/2022 10:07

I also hope whoever comes in banishes Priti to the backbenches. Apparently this is pretty likely; she's not well liked outside of Boris et al.

LadyWithLapdog · 09/07/2022 10:11

sunaks wife was a non-Dom in the uk. The nerve of bringing up your children and using the country but not paying your fucking share.

wheresmymojo · 09/07/2022 10:11

Actually I'm going to pick The Saj. I prefer Tom T personally but if we're going to have a Tory PM let it be an immigrant son of Pakistani parents.

Firstly because it would be awesome for our non-white communities to see it happen.

Secondly because the cognitive dissonance of it for the hardcore racist Conservative voters will be happy viewing (e.g. my stepdad...it will either be a big step towards him being less ignorant or his head will explode. Both good outcomes).

The only thing that worries me is that these voters would be easy picking for a new (even further) right wing party and/or god fucking forbid another return of Nige.

LadyWithLapdog · 09/07/2022 10:12

Plus Sunaks American green card. Also a tax thing or what?

They did pay their share.

All the money earned in the UK was taxed and the taxes paid in the UK.

If that's not right then the law should be changed. As per a democratic country.

wheresmymojo · 09/07/2022 10:15

The green card was also just whipped up.

My husband has one, has never thought to cancel it...because, why?

He'll just wait for it to expire. That's pretty much what everyone does.

Because you can't predict how your life is going to go and it's bloody annoying trying to get one so you just wait for it to expire in case your life takes a turn that means going back there for a job would be a good move.

Nothing to do with tax.

wheresmymojo · 09/07/2022 10:16

And I'm not a Rishi fan. It was completely blown out of proportion fueled by his own side to begin with as certain people in the party were concerned about the level of popularity he had.

LadyWithLapdog · 09/07/2022 10:20

So how come his wife has now paid taxes in the uk after the furore? Suddenly discovered it was the right thing to do? Greedy duplicitous bastards.

bossyrossy · 09/07/2022 10:58

Thank you for all you responses, I am now better informed on the likely candidates and the pros and cons for each of them. My choice would be Tom Tugendhat or Rory Stewart, if he could make a comeback, both intelligent men with a world perspective on our country’s issues and not just in it to line their own pockets and I believe neither have been tainted by being close to BJ. But, like most mumsnetters, it doesn’t matter what I think, it will be down to Conservative party members who are mostly white, middle age or older, so we will end up with the same old, same old.

As I’ve said before, I’m not a Conservative supporter but I would like to see in Parliament honest, intelligent politicians on both sides of the house, who have the best interests of this country at their heart and who are prepared to listen to the opposition and at times, agree with each other, and not just argue and slag each other off just for the sake of it. With the current PM we have lost respect for our democracy, we need to win it back.

Most people aren't holding senior positions in the UK Government though, that's the difference.

midsomermurderess · 09/07/2022 12:40

Someone on here has a husband with a green card. Is he a member of HM ‘s Government? And there’s is always someone on here coming out with ‘well my husband…’.

That is so outrageous.
They could pay tax, help public services and still be very rich. Greedy arses.

Has to be Larry the Cat.

Yes he is the man

Yes I agree with that. She’s an Indian citizen who pays taxes in India. She also pays taxes on uk income in the uk and a non dom charge which is fair enough. In any event, it should be about him, not his wife.

Notonthestairs · 09/07/2022 12:53

Well obviously I don't have a vote but if I did it would be for Tugendhat - he rejected much the shenanigans that's gone on (can't be arsed to list them) and I think he's old school One Nation Tory. I understand their aims even if I don't agree with their methods.

I'd like a bit of calm boring politics if at all possible please.

Michael Gove. Can't stand him but I imagine it would cause Boris Johnson to explode with outrage!

Even that’s not a good enough reason I’m afraid. Just listening to Dead Ringers and ‘Martha Carney’ saying “Michael Gove has been fired - unfortunately that wasn’t followed by the words Into the Sun” 😂

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 09/07/2022 12:58

Keir Starmer because we should have a general election and give people chance to get rid of Rees-Mogg/Raab/Johnson/Pincher et al completely.
I'm dreaming of a Portillo style 1997 election night.....

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 09/07/2022 13:02

I agree with Rishi's wife non-dom tax stuff being garbage.
I am far more concerned about his closeness with American health companies. I think NHS needs change but a US profiteering model isn't the answer.

Sunak: No fear! He gets a tick for being successful outside of politics- but his apparent commitment to continuing NHS sell off is a major concern.

Plus he voted for Brexit! (Probably because he could engineer a way to profit from this).

Couldn't agree more 👍
