Who should replace Johnson? Explain your answer.

Tom Tugendhat is quite good looking too so that's a factor ;)

He's been doing the rounds for ages in the Conservative associations. Am a Tory member and have seen him speak a few times in the last couple years - every speech felt like a leadership bid!

ThreeRingCircus · 07/07/2022 13:57

I'd also be pleased with Tobias Ellwood but he's already distancing himself from the leadership bid, sadly.

VeryQuaintIrene · 07/07/2022 13:58

Any one who isn't a doctrinaire Brexit-er and is willing to negotiate with the EU in good faith to attempt sort out the horrific mess that we are in thanks to Johnson and his gang of wreckers.

Kitfish · 07/07/2022 13:58

DiamanteDelia · 07/07/2022 10:09

Tom Tugenhat.

I second Tom Tugenhat.

JennyForeigner · 07/07/2022 13:59

A broken toaster.

It has more integrity.

LondonWolf · 07/07/2022 13:39

Javid. Because he knows what a woman is and already started to apply the brakes to the Gender Juggernaut.

Well then he’d get my vote.

Tom Tugenhat sounds like a reasonable person. As a Remainer he’d provide some balance to the Brexit balls-up.

Sunak - an integrity void! Plus his Maths were off with Covid spending. Wife’s dodgy tax affairs - just no.

Suella Braverman - what’s she like??

Me too. My thoughts exactly.

LoobyDop · 07/07/2022 14:11

I genuinely like Tom Tugendhat, as in I actually rate him rather than think he’s the best of a bad bunch, but he doesn’t have the experience yet.
Out of the current/last week’s cabinet, I’d pick Sajid Javid. Showed he has limits and a level of integrity when he quit rather than be a Cummings stooge. Rapidly backed off from the zero-covid-leaning approach when he became Health Secretary. Has not pandered to the TRA lobby. He may not set the world alight, but credible and takes the job seriously would be a 1000% improvement right now.

And also, however much I do not like the current brand of Brexit Tory, a general election is the last thing we need. A couple of years with someone sensible, to give some fresh people with real talent time to get some experience and exposure (or drop nicely into a safe seat in Greater Manchester, thinking of nobody in particular) will work fine.

ParanoidGynodroid · 07/07/2022 14:14

swedex · 07/07/2022 10:09

Rory Stewart!

Aargh, yes!
Was just saying to DH how much I wished Rory Stewart would come back and save the day.

Pbbananabagel · 07/07/2022 14:15

A general election- because this is just getting ridiculous now.

midsomermurderess · 07/07/2022 14:16

I think if the Conservatives went for an election the country would be bloody furious. 3 elections in five years? As for a safe seat in Greater Manchester for a certain person, wouldn’t that be good. A great boost.

TotalRhubarb · 07/07/2022 14:20

Rory Stewart, ideally.

Failing him, Sajid Javid. Sensible, competent, not an extremist, not known to be wholly corrupt. Seems open to listening to those who know that they’re talking about, rather than pushing things just for ideological reasons. Has a pair of balls and a backbone in terms of gender woo. He’d be a steady pair of hands.

swedex · 07/07/2022 10:09

Rory Stewart!

Yes, get him back!

Lesserspottedmama · 07/07/2022 14:31

A lot people speculating Ben Wallace, he seems like a war-mongerer to me though. My hope is for Penny Mordaunt personally.

milveycrohn · 07/07/2022 14:35

Definitely NOT Michael Gove. On this I agree with BJ, he IS a snake.
Ben Wallace is apparently a favourite. That means he has kept his head down.
Dominic Raab is apparently the deputy, and could be a temp PM, until a new leader is chosen.
Tugenhat is inexperienced.
Surprisingly, I have been impressed by Nadhim Zahawi, although I think he lacks experience. However, he has come across as someone not easily rattled by the media.
Pritti Patel - NO, as she is hated by everyone, and won't stand a chance.
So far Suella Braverman (current attorney general) has declared she is a candidate. I dont know a lot about her. She seems OK.
Liz Truss seems OK in her current job, but lacks experience for PM role.
Rishi Sunak was inept as chancellor, so not him.

Note. There is no need for a General Election, as PMs have resigned before. Technically, we vote for our MP, the leading party select their leader, etc by the rules they have decided upon.

gryilla · 07/07/2022 14:57

@LoobyDop - good points all and I agree with all of it! I'd respect Sajid Javid as leader.

bossyrossy · 07/07/2022 15:24

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius, I am not a Conservative supporter and therefore do not have great knowledge about the possible candidates who might succeed BJ. I genuinely wanted some suggestions from mumsnetters and apologise if my question came across as rude, that was not my intention. It was simply short and to the point.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/07/2022 16:23

Fair enough, @bossyrossy . Smile

NellieJean · 07/07/2022 16:31

Not having been in the Cabinet is a positive as far as I’m concerned. All the ones who until yesterday where on the tv telling us how great Johnson was, Zahawi being the worst example should be ruled out.
Given the final decision rests with the dinosaurs of local Conservative associations we will end up with another headbanger..

poshme · 07/07/2022 16:34

Sajid javid. Has experience of several cabinet jobs (health, home, chancellor) so has a good grasp of what needs doing. Seems sensible. Resigned from chancellor to stand up for his people. Has principles.

Tom T hasn't just not been in the cabinet, he's never been a minister at all. Too inexperienced- he should get an important job this time, and run next time.

Pls not Priti Patel.

midsomermurderess · 07/07/2022 16:38

Priti Patel is a non starter.

Loyaultemelie · 07/07/2022 16:49

Definitely Larry the Cat he's the only one with some semblance of sense around there everyone else has completely lost their minds in the last while (well ages)

hillbillyannie · 07/07/2022 16:53

Regarding Tom Hugentadt, what exactly has "experience" in a PM given us so far? Too long in the corridors of Westminster, making too many deals with often corrupt Governments, too many side arrangements with their mates because they have "experience" and connections. There are a very small number of exceptions I suppose, but none that I can think of right off, Theresa May perhaps?

So let us see a new broom sweep clean, if that is possible in the absolutely tainted Tory Party of today. But it can change to be kinder to everyone not just their affluent mates at the expense of the machinations of running the country properly.

Rory Stewart was on LBC this morning, he acknowledged that he was not in the running for PM because he is not an MP. However, delightfully and humbly he said he would be open to being welcomed back or words to that effect. So he may just get on the ticket for the next election, and who knows where that might lead?

hillbillyannie · 07/07/2022 16:54

Sorry, mispelt your name Tom!

takeitandleaveit · 07/07/2022 16:56

Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. They can take it in turns.
