He’s just announced it!!

I love it when Trevor Nelson stands in for Ken. He plays such good music.

I think Scott will tone it down for radio 2, but I like him and hopefully will keep playing some newer stuff.

Can’t stand Love Songs. Makes my ears bleed.

Florenz · 01/07/2022 17:47

Steve Wright will probably end up on Greatest Hits.

Never understood how he's got away with pretty much doing the same show for 40 years, he must know where some bodies are buried or something.

Radio in this country is in a terrible state at the moment.

JiminyGlick · 01/07/2022 17:50

This is excellent news. Years and years too late, but never mind.

and I love Scott Mills. Plus he’s far too old for radio 1.

@Florenz

No it isn't. Just BBC radio. I love the radio in the UK.

Absolute Radio and Greatest Hits Radio give people what they want.

The BBC give people what the BBC think they want.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 01/07/2022 17:51

@Florenz

What would you like to hear on the radio?

PickleSarnie · 01/07/2022 17:58

Yes!! I listen to Ken on BBC sounds on internet at work then when Jeremy Vine comes on, I go back and listen to Ken all over again.

When Ken has to eat lunch/go to the loo/sleep then they should have Richie Anderson covering for him. I love them both.

Great music and interesting and entertaining presenters.

The Absolute stations are OK but they have far too many adverts.

GHR is absolutely dire. That "Rossy" guy they have on in the morning literally makes my toes curl and the music they play is so middle of the road it hurts, the station seems to be aimed at OAPs.

Rassy · 01/07/2022 18:00

I don't mind Steve Wright but I find Scott Mills so bland and boring. Might need to find a new station

PuppyMonkey · 01/07/2022 18:00

I can’t do adverts on the radio though so find other stations unlistenable.

I really like Steve Wright. Gutted.

I think he said he’s staying at Radio 2 to do more special projects. Who’ll get the afternoon slot?

Rylan?

I’ve quite enjoyed Vernon sitting in for Zoe!

At last! Maybe whomever he's got the 'goods' on has gone so they can finally get rid!

To be fair, I rarely listen to R2 now as I only like Ken, but I can't stomach Richie and it's moved away from my musical demographic.

But for the Love, please not Rylan!

Richie has no discernible wit or talent.

I did catch Paddy whatisname standing in for Jeremy Vine as I was in the car (which has no DAB) He was much better to listen to.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 01/07/2022 18:04

@Florenz

If you listen on the Absolute Radio app and register, you get many fewer adverts.

I agree, I don't like the presenters on Greatest Hits Radio and only listen on Saturday morning because I don't like Frank Skinner on Absolute.

I really appreciate the Absolute presenters after I have listened to Greatest Hits.

Please don't say that!

I like certain programmes - Pat Sharp/Simon Mayo/Mark Goodier/Martin Kemp, Paul Gambaccini plus a couple of others. SW would RUIN it

I care not a jot or a tittle. I have discovered Boom Radio - where the DJs are intelligent, well informed, and full of amusing anecdotes from their old days on pirate radio, when they worked with greats like Kenny Everett. The music is perfect for the radio 2 demographic- loads of 60s, 70s, 80s, plus any good recent stuff and a wee bit of 50s for the v oldies.
Presenters include Nikky Horne, Roger Twiggy Day, David Hamilton, David Lloyd, and the absolutely loony but v funny self deprecating Les Ross, who ought to be bottled as a tonic.

I love Boom! It's absolutely the soundtrack to my youth and plays so many tracks that NEVER get aired on the radio.

But it's over to GHR when Les Ross is on. He's their version of Steve Wright!

@PuppyMonkey

But surely it is better to put up with the adverts and listen to something you like rather than sticking with the BBC?

Also, Absolute doesn't have the awful local adverts you get on other local radio stations.

Baggyeye · 01/07/2022 18:08

God we used to have to listen on the school bus to that show 30years ago can't believe he's been doing that drivel for so long!

Nanny0gg · 01/07/2022 18:09

DontLikeCoffee · 01/07/2022 17:06

Steve Wright has never moved on from the 80s talking over the end of the songs. He also cuts the music short.

Yes.

Cardinal sins in my book

Rassy · 01/07/2022 18:09

I gave birth to DD2 (now 19) during Steve Wrights Afternoon Show!

2X4B523P · 01/07/2022 18:11

Very sad but at least he’s continuing with Sunday morning love songs.

balalake · 01/07/2022 18:11

So what does he know about a senior BBC executive that kept him there all these years?

TheCrowening · 01/07/2022 18:12

FredGarland · 01/07/2022 17:00

So that's the end of Serious Jockin' (or Serious Cringin', as my son calls it)?

I've already cracked the wine open, but will have an extra glass in celebration.

I liked him when I was a kid in the 80s but serious jockin gave me the rage the first time I listened to his R2 show (how many times does he say it?) so there was no way I could ever listen to it again.

PuppyMonkey · 01/07/2022 18:13

@ILoveAllRainbowsx i have tried, as I said I love Simon Mayo but the adverts ruined all enjoyment for me on Greatest Hits.

I don’t hate Steve Wright tbh, not as much as others on the thread anyway.Grin He was long past his Best Before date in about 1986 basically.

OP posts:
ShinyMe · 01/07/2022 18:14

Yay! I cannot BEAR Steve Wright. He's one of the few people who I have to turn off on the radio. That serious jockin shit is SHIT. I accidentally caught his Sunday love thing the other week, and he was doing it there too! Argh.

I want more Liza Tarbuck on radio 2.

MrsAvocet · 01/07/2022 18:15

Glad to see the back of him. I had an MRI scan recently and the assistant put headphones on me playing Steve Wright in the Afternoon and legged it before I could protest. As if being in the scanner for 45 mins wasn't bad enough. They should bring that in at Guantanamo Bay. Never mind water boarding, I'd have confessed to anything by the end of that scan.
