Do you believe in any ‘conspiracy theories’?

Just that really. If so, which ones? 9/11 an inside job? JFK murdered by the American government? 5G? Chemtrails? The royal family are lizard?

I always maintain I don’t believe in anything, but at the same time there’s so much I don’t know and I do believe the government are up to some shady crap that we will never learn about…

The biggest it could be argued, is religion

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/12/2022 20:47

In what way is religion a conspiracy theory?

Nut jobs by and large.

We are lead to believe x when chances are it's nothing at the end of the tunnel, a book where the people keep altering the means, so religion or some of them, are what ever humans say it is. Etc
at least with conspiracies their have been proven ones

*[conspiracy theory]
NOUN
a belief that some secret but influential organization is responsible for an event or phenomenon

I would say that it could be argued that the Vatican fits the description ?

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/12/2022 20:55

I see.

Not convinced the Vatican meets the definition of a secret organisation.

Lkydfju · 02/12/2022 20:58

Not those things but I do believe that a lot more goes on than we know about

Not convinced the Vatican meets the definition of a secret organisation.

Certain elements could be, or a group within a group ect

EmmaAgain22 · 02/12/2022 20:59

I think they try out weird stuff like this

A lot of us in London have experience of odd smells - the most common near my block of flats is like an overpowering sweet flower - and I always wonder what chemical is wafting around!

I feel inclined to believe that the Chinese knew early on how bad the corona virus was and yet they let their citizens fly out all over the world to spread it. Almost like "If we have it let's make sure everyone else has it too."

Sars cov2 was from a lab leak, but on American soil. A level 4 military biological weapons lab was shut down in the summer of 2019 with a "cease and desist" notice for the severest bio-security violations. A few weeks earlier several retirement complexes were hit by a mysterious unidentifiable respiratory illness and many residents died... unheard of in summer. The usual suspects such as legionnaire's disease tested negative.

All the weird news stories in the summer of 2019 about vaping illness and "popcorn lung" were put out as a cover against the lab leak news.

I don't believe that Dr David Kelly committed suicide.

IntentionalError · 03/12/2022 12:00

The closest thing to a ‘conspiracy theory’ which I would agree with is that I have never accepted the official explanations for the deaths of Dr David Kelly or Jeffrey Epstein. Both men committed suicide, according to the official version.

My view is that both were murdered; Kelly by agents of the British state and Epstein by the powerful men to whom he pimped underage girls.

hopeishere · 03/12/2022 12:53

But then there's another theory that Epstein's death was faked 🤷🏻‍♀️

Summerhillsquare · 03/12/2022 13:17

The trouble with most of these theories is that they require an extraordinary degree of organisation, rather than the mild incompetence that most large organisations display. So no.

Yep! I'll take cock-up and cover-up over conspiracy every time.

housemaus · 03/12/2022 13:26

I don't think Epstein's death was a suicide.

Fairly sure Covid was a lab leak - not intentional. That's not really even a conspiracy theory (as Bloomberg said quite recently) - there's no evidence either way and through DH's (old) work he has a bit of knowledge of how easy it is for things to go missing or get taken home from scientific units that very much shouldn't. Usually they're nothing dangerous so it's not like it ends up in the news. Given the virology lab in Wuhan studying bat coronaviruses, it seems more likely than not.

I'm fairly sure there's generally higher echelons of powerful people doing sketchy shit behind closed doors and influencing stuff in ways we don't even imagine. Nobody in particular like "oh it's the Rockefellers/the masons/the illuminati" etc, but generally just huge power dynamics behind the scenes. Again, I guess not really a conspiracy theory as such.

In recent news, four people who made a LOT - billions, in some cases - of money in crypto have died suddenly or in unusual circumstances. Given the collapse of FTX I find that a bit interesting.
