Thanks for the thread, following.

If we know about the provocation, Belarus knows about it too. It won't work if everyone knows about it! Entering the war now for Belarus is going to be a political suicide.

New thread thanks Smile

Thanks for new thread. I’m a lurker but appreciate those who post regularly and thank you for the updates

Ukraine has completely fallen off the news cycle this morning. Obviously Roe vs Wade has taken the top headline spot but plenty of smaller topics still above Ukraine.

ISW Key Takeaways

Russian forces continued to drive north to Lysychansk and have likely encircled Ukrainian troops in Hirske-Zolote.

Ukrainian officials announced that Ukrainian forces are fighting their last battles in the industrial zone of Severodonetsk before withdrawing from the city.

Russian forces conducted unsuccessful offensive operations west of Izyum and north of Slovyansk. Russian forces will likely prioritize encircling Ukrainian troops in Lysychansk and interdicting remaining GLOCs northwest of the city before resuming a full-scale offensive operation on Slovyansk.

Ukrainian forces are continuing to launch counteroffensive operations along the Kherson-Dnipropetrovsk Oblast border and are threatening Russian forces in Kherson City.

Ukrainian partisans continued to attack Russian collaborators in Kherson City.

📣 Russians are yet to feel the impact of sanctions on their daily lives
The restrictions have made the ruble exchange rate unstable and will lead to a 10-15% drop in the Russian economy in 2022, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said at a press conference.
At the same time, the sanctions will continue to tighten until the hostilities in Ukraine cease.
“At some point, despite the propaganda, the people of Russia will feel it in their daily lives,” Blinken said.

The incident was reported to German journalists in the Chancellery of the Berlin Senate.
According to the press secretary of the mayor of Berlin, the first 15 minutes of the conversation did not cause concern.
Suspicions arose after Klitschko began to emphasize that refugees are trying to receive social benefits in the German capital. The conversation was terminated prematurely.
"Unfortunately, part of the reality is that the war is being waged by all means, including online, in order to digitally undermine trust and discredit Ukraine's partners and allies," Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffey said.
The falsity of the call was later confirmed by Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk and Vitaliy Klitschko himself.

@Ijsbear

Kyiv Independent:
⚡️ Ukraine, France to cooperate on investigation of Russian war crimes.

As point of info/bit of query really I'm not quite sure why the MSM source chose to highlight that story today. French assets, including personnel have been on the ground in Ukraine investigating war crimes for a couple of months now.

For example from 11 April:

"An expert French crime investigation team has arrived in Ukraine to investigate possible war crimes by Russian forces, France’s Foreign Ministry said Monday.
“France is resolutely committed alongside the Ukrainians, its international partners, and the courts to prevent impunity for unsustainable acts constituting war crimes,” the ministry said, adding: “France will not look away from such atrocities.”
The team is the first such deployment to Ukraine from a NATO country."

Brew for all. I'm having to take little breaks, but thank you all for ploughing on.

Ijsbear · 25/06/2022 11:19

@notimagain Yeah I've noticed that they mention something then after a few weeks mention it again. Often there is an extra commitment by the other country that the Telegram account wants to reinforce, sometimes it seems to be to project again how much other countries are helping. Because there is quite often something behind the re-mention, I tend to pass them on.

The two channels I follow tend to put out a lot more announcements than I pass on here. Mostly I put the ones that are have some significance militarily, politically or strategically (sometimes incl economically), for instance the Kaliningrad stuff has the potential to become a real hotspot so I'm putting all mentions of that into these posts.

@PerkingFaintly Nice to see you :)

Ijsbear · 25/06/2022 11:20

That was a badly written post by me, sorry blinks

Arestovych said yesterday that Ukraine troops withdrew from Hirske-Zolote with minimal losses, despite Russia claiming they've encircled 2000 troops.

Ukraine has completely fallen off the news cycle this morning. Obviously Roe vs Wade has taken the top headline spot but plenty of smaller topics still above Ukraine.

Ukraine was still prominent on the World Service, though, including interesting stuff about "Babushka Z" -- I hadn't heard of her until this morning.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-61757667

So the Russians have put up a statue of her in Mariupol; it might be more to the point if they put up a few dwellings. Or cleared some garbage from the streets to delay the spread of disease. Or, well, anything a bit more practical than a statue to a complete misunderstanding.

Oh, and there was an "OS Conversations" about going back to Kyiv; there were interviews with some who had started out clearing streets of rubble, and then came across a teacher who was trying to reconstruct her classroom all on her own so they began to help her. It was inspiring, really: people who had never worked with their hands and are learning how to waterproof a building. I don't think Ukraine has been forgotten quite yet.

OwlsDance · 25/06/2022 12:26

And yet Russia is claiming that reconstruction of Mariupol "has already begun".

Yep, with statues. Most real people are dead or have fled.

@Ijsbear thanks for your efforts in filtering the torrent of information out there. I find your takeaways so valuable.

I am also heartened by lurkers. It helps to me to see you popping up and to know others are still following and Ukraine has not fallen off the collective radar.

I dont think the US is going to forget about Ukraine at all, at least not while Biden is president.

it's back to the Cold War, warm version.

Ukrainecast from yesterday is interesting in the regard of highlighting that the last Cold War was pretty ‘warm’ in a number of areas, particularly Africa.

Thank you

I have just reread Primo Levi' If This is a Man, and The Truce

As most people know, they speak of WW2 and Russia as the liberators, but in many ways they make comprehensible what is happening in Ukraine.

And yet Russia is claiming that reconstruction of Mariupol "has already begun".

But this they mean they are marking houses for demolition and telling the owners this but not a lot more.

Woman with relative who returned to Mariupol has said her relative has left Mariupol again. Relative called from Mariupol saying the city was "beautiful" but since returning to Russia has said the building has been condemned by the Russian authorities and far from being able to claim back her property she has officially lost it. She said that despite this and there being no roof on the building after it having been bombed, there were still 2 people living in the building on the ground floor and they had not left Mariupol at any point.

The relative here in the UK I know is bewildered by it all. She doesn't know how to help her relative now in Russia. Her relative said she doesn't trust either the Ukrainian government nor the Russian one (which is why she returned to Mariupol to check the situation for herself), but even having seen it, doesn't really know what to do or have a plan.

I'm not sure either have grasped them may be in a Berlin Wall / Korea situation where they may not get the chance to see each other for many many years (and that may be only with luck) due to circumstances and which side of the line they find themselves.

Reconstruction is definitely pushing it in terms of describing whats happening in Mariupol though.

Another great thread, this time debunking the idea of the US's decline as a great power: twitter.com/wolf_vukovic/status/1540378141612421121?s=21&t=ASqOc404mxwcW3od03Hs4w

So I'm not sure how to word this...but does Ukraine genuinely have plans to reclaim Mariupol? Why do I feel like that city is likely lost to Russia but I still have hope for Kherson?

Still lurking daily blueshoes, and passing info from here to a few others.

Thank you all for sticking with it.

I imagine they want all of their land back. Whether they can bring that about, is another matter.
