Maybe the locations were on that hard drive the Ukrainians found lying around 😂

blueshoes · 02/07/2022 17:48

I think the very basic idea is if mines are sown by your side the mines are tethered in areas known to you, so you avoid those mined areas and only sail in safe areas/through safe lanes.

Problems start if the mined areas aren't mapped correctly, if you can't navigate properly, or if as supposedly sometimes happens a mine breaks free from it's tether and starts drifting out of the marked area.

@notimagain, appreciate the explanation.

Hmmm sounds like a lot of things for the Russians could get wrong.

The Russians have reportedly blown up their own landing craft in the Black Sea^.

@Igotjelly , thanks for the lead.

Apparently a landing craft of the Russian Black Sea Fleet D-106 was blown up after hitting one of Russia's own sea mines near Mariupol

Russia says the crew survived but it is another humiliation for Russia.

I have a question for others in the know: how does a military naval vessel avoid going into one of its own mines? Tried googling but could not find the answer.

I was wondering that too.
Also, how do you know whose mine it was?
Perhaps notimagain, or another military person here knows.

Belarus claiming that Ukraine has fired missiles on its territory. Lukashenko reported to have said his country does not want war with Ukraine.

False flag or downright lie do we think?

I think it might be a lie as it would be madness for Ukraine to risk an attack on them form yet another flank.

Unless Belarus had been gathering at a base at the border to attack, Ukraine knew and so was trying to put it out of action?

OwlsDance · 02/07/2022 22:02

Belarus is trying to play both sides I think. They are saying it was Ukraine attack, knowing full well it bloody wasn't - so they're signalling to Kremlin that they "believe them". At the same time, they're telling Ukraine they don't want a war with them.

Smart, very smart. Question is, how will Putin respond? Surely he's not that blind and deluded???

How big?

Media spin has to be taken into account and also the fact that Germany has a big far-right problem but there are reports that some German ministers are pretty well on the Russian side.

ScrollingLeaves · 02/07/2022 23:18

Looking for the Guardian article Ijsbear mentioned I came across this which is fascinating and heartening ( porn isn’t the only medium).

I wonder if this is the German protest Ijsbear?

It seems to be a protest by pacifists in a way.

@ScrollingLeaves this is brilliant. Thanks for linking.

“In the last 20 days, we’ve made 100 drone dropping systems using e-cigarette batteries and have another 100 in progress,” the engineer continues, holding one drone they made which has a thermal camera on it.

“We have 2,000 orders in the pipeline.”
He says it was his way to contribute to the war effort.

Sheremet’s team are also making drones like this one which can carry two grenades

“There are people who want to help and don’t know how to shoot a rifle. Our brain is our weapon,” the engineer continues.

“We have students, engineers, volunteer programmes... it’s very easy to solder this stuff, it is not a difficult job.”

Drones have therefore become crucial in the battle, allowing Ukrainian forces to spot artillery and so direct fire efficiently, saving ammunition. Some of the drones can also drop anything from anti-personnel grenades to small bombs or ferry medical supplies to soldiers in trouble.

The e-cigarette project has unexpected side benefits, he says as it helps with recycling and is safer than students just chucking their devices away.

E-cigarettes have powerful batteries which are designed to be recharged. The disposable devices have no USB charging points and so are discarded sometimes after a single use."

If I was in Kjiv, I can see myself doing this. Finally a way to contribute to the war effort with brains and little fingers.

Hm, that's worrying Magic. It's going to take mighty efforts by Lukashenko to avoid getting drawn into the war now.

Key Takeaways

Russian forces entered Lysychansk and advanced within the city on July 2.

Russian forces are conducting offensive operations southwest of Lysychansk likely to push westward towards Siversk and complete the capture of the entirety of Luhansk Oblast.

Russian forces continued unsuccessful ground assaults north of Slovyansk.

Russian forces conducted limited attacks southwest of Donetsk City but did not make any confirmed gains.

Ukrainian troops are likely planning to threaten Russian ground lines of communication (GLOCs) throughout Kharkiv Oblast using Western-supplied weapons.

Ukrainian counterattacks and partisan activity continue to force Russian troops to prioritize defensive operations along the Southern Axis.

Proxy leadership may be setting conditions for the direct annexation of proxy republics by the Russian Federation.

Ukrainian forces likely conducted a deliberate withdrawal from Lysychansk, resulting in the Russian seizure of the city on July 2. Geolocated footage showed Russian forces casually walking around northern and southeastern neighborhoods in Lysychansk in a way that suggests that there are few or no remaining Ukrainian forces in the city as of July 2.[1] Ukrainian military officials did not publicly announce a troop withdrawal but neither did they report on defensive battles around Lysychansk. Ukrainian Internal Affairs Minister Vadym Denysenko vaguely noted that Russian forces have a “high probability” of capturing Lysychansk but that they will have a difficult time advancing in Donetsk Oblast past Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.[2] Ukrainian National Guard Spokesperson Ruslan Muzychuk rejected reports of Russian forces seizing and encircling Lysychansk, but these denials are likely outdated or erroneous.[3] The Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR) Ambassador to Russia, Rodion Miroshnik, had previously claimed that Ukrainian forces began withdrawing from Lysychansk on June 28.[4] ISW will continue to monitor the situation.

⚡️Uzbekistan drops plan to curb region's autonomy after large-scale protests.
Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on July 2 abandoned plans to curtail the autonomy of Karakalpakstan, a region in Uzbekistan. The plans, which would remove the word "sovereign" from the region's description and end its right to secede, have prompted some of the largest protests in Uzbekistan's history, with thousands taking to the streets in Nukus, the capital of Karakalpakstan. Mirziyoyev has declared a state of emergency in the region.

That's an interesting and mostly fair article. However , using the "grudging contributions" from the Scottish and Welsh governments as evidence of waning Western support is unfair Confused. Defence is a reserved matter, there are no Barnett consequentials and, unlike the WM government, they have limited means to raise funds. The governments are legally required to have a balanced budget and are not allowed to run a deficit. Hmm

So the fact that they have contributed - albeit making it clear it's a one-off - is a sign of support not reluctance.
