Tonight the V&A museum is hosting the Conservatives’ lavish summer fundraising party. It shouldn’t be happening.

No, it should not be happening then. Very murky.

It’s so depressing that this barely registers on the barometer of Tory sleaze and corruption.

our standards have fallen so, so low because of these leeches persistent corruption.

'It’s so depressing that this barely registers on the barometer of Tory sleaze and corruption.'

What on earth is wrong with having a fundraising dinner at the V&A museum? I'd understand your sleaze allegations if it were at a strip club but the V&A museum?!

Cornettoninja · 20/06/2022 12:14

Did you even watch the linked video? It’s clearly stated, on the government website that publicly funded charity board members should, and be seen to be politically impartial, not the Tory party chairman and chief fundraiser using a nationally owned building its contents as fairground prizes in return for cash by offering access not available to anyone else.

sleaze
/sliːz/

Learn to pronounce
noun
BRITISH
immoral, sordid, and corrupt behaviour or activities.
"political campaigns that are long on sleaze and short on substance"
verbINFORMAL
behave in an immoral, corrupt, or sordid way.
"you're the last person who has to sleaze around bars"

Roussette · 20/06/2022 12:19

You can't have watched the video all the way through, that much is clear. It's sleazy and wrong and their ethos is impartiality which obviously this is not

A good test is to substitute Labour/SNP/LibDem for the Conservative party. If the answer is "Can't see a problem", then fine. If the response is to play merry hell, then it's not.

Just saw that Johnson had a "minor routine operation on his sinuses" this morning.
Nothing to do with the things he sniffs into those sinuses then?
I reckon it's septum reconstruction to stop him going the way of Daniela Westbrook (remember her?)

The code of conduct for board members of public bodies (which includes the V&A) states that they should be, and be seen to be, politically impartial. You should not occupy a paid party political post or hold a particularly sensitive or high-profile role in a political party.

Ben Elliot is Co Conservative Chair and chief fundraiser - and a Trustee of the V&A. He was re appointed as Trustee by Boris Johnson. He has been urged before to keep his lobbying & business interests separate.
Nicholas Coleridge (V&A chairman) auctioned off a tour of the museum of his favourite exhibits - a tour that does not appear to be open to the rest of the nation. He was knighted earlier this year.
The fundraiser is usually held at the Hurlingham Club which is not a public body.

Toni Morrison, 1995

Quote./

  1. Construct an internal enemy, as both focus and diversion.

  2. Isolate and demonize that enemy by unleashing and protecting the utterance of overt and coded name-calling and verbal abuse. Employ ad hominem attacks as legitimate charges against that enemy.

  3. Enlist and create sources and distributors of information who are willing to reinforce the demonizing process because it is profitable, because it grants power and because it works.

  4. Palisade all art forms; monitor, discredit or expel those that challenge or destabilize processes of demonization and deification.

  5. Subvert and malign all representatives of and sympathizers with this constructed enemy.

  6. Solicit, from among the enemy, collaborators who agree with and can sanitize the dispossession process.

  7. Pathologize the enemy in scholarly and popular mediums; recycle, for example, scientific racism and the myths of racial superiority in order to naturalize the pathology.

  8. Criminalize the enemy. Then prepare, budget for and rationalize the building of holding arenas for the enemy-especially its males and absolutely its children.

  9. Reward mindlessness and apathy with monumentalized entertainments and with little pleasures, tiny seductions, a few minutes on television, a few lines in the press, a little pseudo-success, the illusion of power and influence, a little fun, a little style, a little consequence.

  10. Maintain, at all costs, silence.

Cornettoninja · 20/06/2022 14:49

Hmm, halfway…. I was struggling to identify number 4 to be honest.I suppose that’s controlling the internet isn’t it?

DuncinToffee · 20/06/2022 14:56

I was thinking Channel4 and BBC and woke, cancel culture. Work in progress on that one.

Society has changed since 1995

Hasn’t it just. I never thought the 90’s would end up being a relatively golden age compared to what’s developed since the turn of the century.

Remember the outcry from the government over P&O and their hiring of agency staff?

Simon Clarke this morning confirmed Brexit was about immigration

Is brexit to blame for the airport chaos?

Simon Clarke - No... the British people made their views very clear on unlimited immigration from the EU

So airport chaos is all the fault of bigots who don't want immigration? I guess I'll buy that.

I love how Suella is being called out constantly.

Can I hope that she won't get voted in as my MP again 🤞

Yesterday her Fb page was about thanking her hairdresser for the excellent service. I'm wondering if she ravelled from her house all the way down here just for a haircut 🤔

Cost living crisis & rail strikes and the Conservatives decide to...

"Exclusive: No.10 plans to ease restrictions on City bosses' pay - while preaching 'wage restraint' to everyone else."

The reply 'is he fucking insane' sums it up.

Bribes for brexit benefits

Bonuses in the financial and insurance sector grew by 27.9 per cent over the last year, while average wages in the same period grew by just 4.2 per cent. Some £6bn was paid out in City bonuses in March alone.

Are some peoples' response to this "oh well!"

itsgettingweird · 20/06/2022 20:54

I get so cross nowadays talking to uneducated (about actual political things) people.

So tonight I had to listen to how bad the strikes were. Kids would miss exams blah blah blah.

I pointed out no one is missing exams. And if it really was the only method of transport for their children to get to school then perhaps they should support the peoples right to fair working conditions and pay and they can see they are vital. I ended up asking if they genuinely believed their child's right to get to school exceeded the rail staffs staff to fair pay, conditions and their kids to have a decent household income?

I then added that perhaps they should be supporting the strikes so the service they think is so vital retains staff to run it!!!!
