Which right(s) would you like to get rid of?

The Convention secures:

the right to life (Article 2)
freedom from torture (Article 3)
freedom from slavery (Article 4)
the right to liberty (Article 5)
the right to a fair trial (Article 6)
the right not to be punished for something that wasn’t against the law at the time (Article 7)
the right to respect for family and private life (Article 8)
freedom of thought, conscience and religion (Article 9)
freedom of expression (Article 10)
freedom of assembly (Article 11)
the right to marry and start a family (Article 12)
the right not to be discriminated against in respect of these rights (Article 14)
the right to protection of property (Protocol 1, Article 1)
the right to education (Protocol 1, Article 2)
the right to participate in free elections (Protocol 1, Article 3)
the abolition of the death penalty (Protocol 13)

This a thread from 2018 but nothing has changed since then

On this day in 1959 the European Court of Human Rights was established. It gets some (usually unjustifiably) bad press in the UK but it is an essential protection for over 820m people. Please share this THREAD on why it matters more than ever today

We don't have an Aldi nearby but I prefer Lidl because of their fresh bakery, esp. the pretzels

I'm a Lidl shopper as well, mainly due to price and it is the nearest supermarket and I can actually walk to it. Actually the bakery does figure in there as well.

"I don't think anyane is suggesting abolishing human rights, this had gone through our very own rigorous judiciary process"

No it hadn't. It is ongoing. The judicial review has not been completed.

'As someone who works in education it scares me about abolishing human rights because we follow so many humans rights charters in education.'

I don't think anyane is suggesting abolishing human rights, this had gone through our very own rigorous judiciary process. Rather reviewing the power of a court in Strasbourg that can overide our own legal processes. Many countries deport illegal immigrants, this is nothing new.

They are considering removing themselves from the court of human rights. If they are leaving it are you genuinely suggesting they aren't removing us from those protections?

And if our judiciary says our own rights are enough (they haven't even said that yet anyway) what is it that the ECHR does that we don't agree with?

This isn't about not being able to deport illegal immigrants back to their own country. We've done that and so have many countries.

This is about sending people who haven't yet had their claims processed to a third country and a third party processing their claims. They don't even get to return to the Uk if their claim is successful.
They are 'resettled' in Rwanda.

I can understand you'd stand up for the plan as you're a Johnson supporter. But at least tell the truth (although Johnson doesn't so I can see why you would t feel the need)

Ginajo · 19/06/2022 20:21

I was the person who mentioned there were rumours of a Carrie/Boris story. I'm outraged that the married Foreign Secretary, holder of one of the great offices of state, wanted to employ his mistress in a £100k Chief of Staff job. I'm even more outraged that this man is now our Prime Minister and that the mainstream media have suppressed the story. It's corrupt and it's disgraceful.

Notonthestairs · 19/06/2022 20:26

Dominic Cummings has tweeted Grin

"The 'missing story' (pulled by Times after no10 call Fri night) is true. Walters repeatedly published accurate stories, e.g on illegal donations. Times pathetic to have folded & shd reverse ferret. Truth is worse! 🛒 wanted to appoint girlfriend to gvt job in Q3 2020 too"

So maybe it wasn't a one time event - for Carrie, obviously he was more successful with Acuri.

Notonthestairs · 19/06/2022 20:30

Simon Walters wrote the Times article.

Walters told the Guardian: “I stand by the story. I went to all the relevant people over two days. Nobody offered me an on-the-record denial and Downing St didn’t deny it off the record either."
Journalists at the Times were baffled by the decision to withdraw Saturday’s story, with multiple sources suggesting there had been a high-level intervention to remove it.

ClaudineClare · 19/06/2022 22:25

Johnson's advisor's are so inept. Did they think the deletion of the story would go unnoticed? Didn't they anticipate that the Twitterverse would air it far and wide?

Re: Dom's tweet. Slightly ambiguous, does "girlfriend" mean Carrie or someone else?! At that point Carrie and Johnson were engaged and had a child, so she was a bit more than just his "girlfriend"...

DowningStreetParty · 19/06/2022 22:35

So Boris would have tried to give his mistress (Carrie) an 100K job while their grubby relationship was still a secret.
Johnson just needs to resign, these incidents of his shitty behaviour just keep on coming out. The Tory party donors who seem to be running things, must know he’s absolute electoral catsick by now.

I really hope the voters in the two by-elections will use their chance to vote against the whole Johnson’s government’s record of sleaze and corruption.

We only have these two elections at all because one Tory MP was sent to prison for child sexual abuse in Wakefield, the other Tory MP was forced to resign because of watching pornography in his workplace in Parliament. Horrific.

You're way behind the times, @JaniieJones. No-one is objecting to illegal immigrants being departed. What they're objecting to is legal refugees being shunted off to Rwanda.

And you do realise, don't you, that it was our courts who overruled the deportations in every single case bar one?

AmaryIlis · 19/06/2022 22:44

Given that Carrie seems to have had the sense to move on, I wonder which of the various jobs in Boris' gift are now filled by his current girlfriend/s?

Peregrina · 19/06/2022 22:49

Rather reviewing the power of a court in Strasbourg that can overide our own legal processes.

Even though this was promoted by Johnson's hero Churchill and set up largely by British judges. Is it Strasbourg the problem, or the name? Or is it just that you want to abolish human rights for other people?

At one time we had politicians who had some stature and could see beyond narrow self interest

Ah yes, those leftie judges. Although the judicial class is rather noted for being full of privately educated white men, who are not normally people who you would expect to be lefties.

AmaryIlis · 19/06/2022 23:01

Come to think of it, Patel must have been rather pleased when the EHCR overruled that last deportation. She'd have looked a right pillock if that plane had flown all the way to Rwanda with one refugee in it.

DuncinToffee · 20/06/2022 08:31

Paul Sinha
Of all Stephen King's visions, the one where Carrie completely destroys an entire party is, I hope, the most prophetic.

Meanwhile the Government will change the law to allow businesses to hire agency staff to replace striking workers.

The Conservative way now - you don't like the law, change it! Surprised Raab can agree with this after he claimed you can't fiddle with the rules just because you don't like the outcome.

Peregrina · 20/06/2022 09:07

Come to think of it, Patel must have been rather pleased when the EHCR overruled that last deportation.

It's grist for their mill. We must leave the ECHR. We will forget that it was espoused by Churchill and brought into being with the efforts of British lawyers. No, we can't have the plebs having rights.

Cornettoninja · 20/06/2022 09:09

We must leave the ECHR

I wonder what snappy branding they’ll come up with for that? I’m curious what ‘er’ ism I’ll be bestowed next.

Peregrina · 20/06/2022 09:12

Meanwhile the Government will change the law to allow businesses to hire agency staff to replace striking workers.

So we have a big pool of unemployed train drivers or teachers or those other groups talking of striking do we? All you can see happening is that the people who were signed on to regular contracts will go freelance with the agencies, and probably demand higher rates of pay.

What we need is those EU citizens like well trained Poles to come and do the jobs. But wait - we left the EU because we didn't want foreigners coming in and taking our jobs.

Peregrina · 20/06/2022 09:14

We must leave the ECHR

They will probably come up with a British version but brand it as Global. As they have done with the GHIC, which covers fewer countries than the EHIC did. But in future it might squeal the Leavers.

DuncinToffee · 20/06/2022 09:17

Remember the outcry from the government over P&O and their hiring of agency staff?

Simon Clarke this morning confirmed Brexit was about immigration

Is brexit to blame for the airport chaos?

Simon Clarke - No... the British people made their views very clear on unlimited immigration from the EU

OP posts:
Peregrina · 20/06/2022 09:17

might, squeal... to make sense of the above.

borntobequiet · 20/06/2022 10:08

So we have a big pool of unemployed train drivers or teachers

Absolutely. That’s why there were droves of agency teachers lining up to cover for Covid-stricken educators.
Not.
